Post by FaneFlugt »

Im playing my first MP game (Götterdammerung as the soviets) And I dont understand what the purpose of some of my units are. Learning by doing.[&:] How are they best deployed? and under which circumstance.

UR (Ukreplennyi Raion) translates into Fortified Region. These units consisted of 4-6 Machine-Gun Artillery Battalions and was employed either in rear defensive lines or in support of attacks by usually securing the flanks. In both cases this saved the use of regular rifle formations.
They really only had enough manpower to man their MG and guns, so it's not entirely accurate that they have so many rifle squads assigned. Because of how a unit with pure guns (passive defenders) would be subject to frequent RBC (retreat before combat) in TOAW, the squads have probably been added for a more realistic behaviour in-game.

The minp (=Mortar Regiment) is like you say a Mortar unit. Because of the scale of this scenario the unit lacks the abillity to perform ranged support in attacks. To put such a unit to best use is therefore to use it in defense, since it CAN support hexes adjacent to it. It just needs to be dug-in.

I've no experience in the GiO-scenario, but it isn't where I would expect large enemy attacks. So instead of letting the units sit idle in the rear you could maybe use them directly in attacks.

Thx for the answers, and the translation. Now I think I got an idea, what most of my units are supposed to represent. Onwards to Berlin.
