Does the AI move?

A brand new campaign-based 3D tactical engine covering combat in World War II, from the developers at Koios Works. The first operation covered is the famous "Wintergewitter" or Winter Storm, a desperate attempt by Hoth's 57th Panzer Korps to break through to the encircled 6th Armee at Stalingrad and the Soviet counter-attack by 2nd Guards Army that drove them back.

Does the AI move?

Post by dakjck »

I have just got Panzer Command and have only played the first two battles of the Winterstorm Campaign as the Germans. I never see the Russians move, other than to change facing or to rout. There appears to be nothing mobile about their defense. Their tanks are essentially pill boxes. Does the AI ever manuver?

On the defense, yes but it is variable. It will come out to retake victory flags if it thinks it is going to lose.

On the offense, yes it does move. You will see more offensive ops later in the game.

So, unless the AI loses a flag, it will not respond to your moves, other than to choose who to shoot at?

Please understand, I really want to like this game, but if it is replacing mobile warfare with positional defense, it hardly lives up to its name. The battles of Operation Winterstorm were mobile battles, not Maginot defenses.

Try playing the same battle as Soviets and see how leaving a good defensive position works for you. [;)]

There are no meeting engagement type battles in the campaigns.

Nope, it will still move but it tends not to be too aggressive with forces that are already positioned near objectives. Stationary forces sight better and shoot better, so it's in the AI's best interest to keep them stationary until they are needed elsewhere or unless they are positioned away from objective, in which case it will try to move them closer.

On an operational level, yes. At a tactical level there were often situations were one side was effectively stationary, even with armor.

it will respond if it thinks you are a treat. If you are driving around in the middle of nowhere, and the defender is in a village, he sees very little incentive to come out.

The first few days of OWS the Russians were caught completely off guard and in fact did little but get mauled and try to hold a few river lines. After a few days, the Russian command figured out that this was a serious counter attack and started getting its act together, you will see a lot more offensive minded Russians around battle 4 or 5.
