RE: Worst Jap turn 1 ever

Post by Luskan »

Quieter turn - things a bit slower than I would prefer - but my plans are progressing well enough - although admittedly I am getting impatient (with better than average progress).  Some of Raver's fleet has escaped the SRA - but they won't get far.

Operation Ordination is taking too long.

Yes he did! It would also seem that two of his submarines are on the long dive to Davey Jones locker.

RE: Worst Jap turn 1 ever

Post by Luskan »

Two of my submarines are on their way back for repairs - high float damage but relatively low sys - they'll both make it.  At this rate I'll torpedo 1 DD for every 4 subs he smacks around Pearl - which clearly isn't worth it so I'm withdrawing them to less patrolled waters.

As for Midway, well as you will see from the combat report, I've performed a retrograde manouvre with the South Seas Detachment - they were all packed up and safe except for 1 pesky knocked out support unit that is demanding to fight to the death and just wouldn't get on the bloody transports - so we left them behind.  Invading Midway is just not plausible - sometimes you'll snatch it, sometimes you won't - but every time you invade Midway you get your APs (6 of them and 3 small escorts) smashed by the coastal defence battery.  Fortunately only one or two will sink - but still!

Midway was never about taking midway (otherwise I would have sent in the 3 naval gds units at Wake after them!) - it was about offering Raver's CVs a chance to come out and play.  He didn't accept the invitation - (Xargun did - and now Lady Lex is under the water [:D]).  Now, consider what happens if Raver continues to not come out to play and I continue to pour troops into Midway.  Yes I'd take the place.

Then I'd have to supply it, througha  gauntlet of enemy surface combat tfs and subs and CV raids.  EVERY TIME KB gets spotted anywhere at all, Raver would whale on Midway like a cat to a scratching post.  Over and over - he might try to take it back but why bother until he wants it? This way, KB slips off into the night several turns ago - and Raver doesn't know where they are.  That, and the fact that His chance to hit my support tfs at Wake has passed - my ships are unloaded, the place is secure. The South Seas Detachment did not die of attrition [8|]

RE: Worst Jap turn 1 ever

Post by Luskan »

So in light of the last turn I feel I should offer a few bit of analysis of the first week or so of play.

First up, patches since I've been gone haven't been kind to the jap player.  That said, things are satisfactory - not good or bad just yet.

I underestimated the defenders at Kuching and Rabaul (and instead of spreading my effort out quite so far, I should have concentrated on these two better).  That said, both will fall soon enough - and I am avoiding repeating the mistake at Iliolo, Cebu, Ambiona, Makassar etc.  Midway was as difficult as expected, and I've saved 80% of the south seas Detachment.  These boys will sit somewhere relaxing for a bit before I send them off to their new post.

I am a little frustrated with how slowly my invasion fleets unloaded at Aparri and Songhia - these are giant steamrollers so I had to wait for them in their entirety (nothing worse than letting Raver bloody some of my units when the end is inevitable anyway etc.).  With a division firmly ashore at Khota Bharu, I'm going to cut Kuantan (being bombed daily) off and pinch it out first, and then I'll crush Singapore.

In the PI, my troops at Aparri (main force) have their flanks secure (my smaller force at Vigan) - previously I've bypassed Tuggeragao (sp?) only to have it bite me later.  This time, I'll crush the defenders there carefully, before hitting Clark.  That means accepting the irritating P-40s for the moment and going slow and steady.

To date I have lost 9 ships, worth about 75 points, with another 4-6 going to sink, another 6-12 crippled and another 6-12 damaged.  Most of those sunk are DDs, APs and 1 CL.  Raver has lost 3 bbs at pearl, Repulse, Houston, 3 AS, 2 AVD, 1 AV, and a whole bunch of other ships from Manila (which my two small CVE units are chasing).

I was not surprised when CL Adelaide appeared at Gili Gili - although I imaging Raver is sending her to port to change commanders! The troops did not land at Gili Gili and the transports (still ok to sail) have been directed elsewhere.  At least there is one target in the Solomons worth chasing - CA Australia should be making an appearance soon as well.  Rabaul . . . well I would prefer not to take Rabaul until Gasmata falls (so they surrender instead of live in the jungle for the next 6 years without food, water or ammo and pop up at the end to retake Rabaul with tanks etc). but I don't think I want to wait.  Why I would loose two whole CD units to attrition worries me - obvious a new rule here I don't understand.

That said, my armament industry has grown by about 50% (increased all the small armament factories to medium ones) - I'm not too worried about those units - in 6 or so months they'll get replaced without issue.  Economically, I've learnt a lot from some of the better Jap economists here on the forums - I can see my pools slowly stocking up and I'm pleased with the way things are working out.

Week 1 Summary

It is very confusing -- what happened at Midway was entirely realistic, but I would guess that a bug in the code caused the problem at Rabaul. (Not uncommon to have bugs in freshly implemented code.)

Your Week 1 summary was insightful and much appreciated. Never mind Raver's complaints about verbosity, the rest of the audience welcomes it!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

HMAS Adelaide

Post by Raverdave »

Launched in 1918 and comissioned in 1922 HMAS Adelaide is an old ship so I was not really surprised to see such poor results. Better is the news that I am sinking a lot of Luskan's DDs. If anything the IJN never has enough DD's so the more that I can sink the more it will hamper the bananana boy later in the war.

Rabal is a legend in-the-making, to hold out as long as they have is an amazing feat of arms. There will be some VCs awarded in the near future.

Luskan must still be living back in the UV days if he thought that hitting Midway would tempt me to use my CVs. Although it would have been a pain to loose it Midway is not THAT important at this point of the war that I would go rushing in to defend it.

Can't wait to get home from war and load up the next game file from the boy-wonder.

3 out of 4 allied opponents who see a chance to "escape" with their CVs and schmack a jap invasion tf at the same time will take it.  Of course, there is a side show benefit of taking Midway - but only if I could do it and not have to guard the place constantly from allied pounding.

RE: Week 1 Summary

Post by Luskan »

Another turn from Raver sails in and the war continues!

A few "big things" happen today - first off, Kuching and Cebu both fall, with allied troops marching into captivity in their thousands. Iliolo will fall next, with Rabaul (no actoin there today) and you'll see the brave troops that have participated in these amphibious operations get 3 whole days of rest, before they load up and storm another allied beach in the SRA (there sure are a lot of them!).

The PI is now mostly red instead of green - excepting Luzon of course, where I haven't made much good progress yet.

Raver's nuisance force arrives just north of Bangkok - they'll be thrown back in good measure.

In China, my torops stormed Changsha - not much ot it since Raver had left only the most token of defence forces back there [:@][:@] As long as his chinese LCU's remain "unrouted" in battle, they're semi - effective. If he saves too many of them from my early game meat grinder . . . well he won't have to wait until 1944 for the chinese offensive. That said, looks like he's shoring up a bit of an defence at Wuchow/Kweilin. I have a different plan for this part of the Chinese fight this time around.

Off Pearl Raver's ASW groups continue their success - sinking the I-9 this turn (but not before the skipper torpedoed a DMS). I'm thrilled to see some of my subs hitting targets - just wish they survived a bit longer. First sub sunk outright this game however.

In the Solomons my little invasions continue - I am starting to run out of little units to guard all these islands - will be a few days before my reinforcements (shipped from Japan on turn 1) get there with the troop numbers and volume of supplies I need to create my Solomon island fortresses.

Raver's bombers have picked up the pace - starting to hit transports regularly. The good news is the early allied aircraft carry small bombs - and my oscars and zeros on CAP over my invasion tfs are scoring good kills. The bad news is that one of these bastards put a bomb through the Hosho's flight deck which really smacked her something nasty. Fortunately the need for my escort CVs to function as a mini KB task force off Kuching is no longer necessary (since I've got 100+ aircraft at Kuching to do the job for me!). That siad, I'll be making sure as few of these bomber units escape the SRA (thanks to Raver's political point bottleneck) as possible.

In news just as disturbing as the lack of defenders at Changsha, my troops bombarded Alor Star today (my main force is starting to move down the Malayan peninsula) and found they place almost empty as well. I haven't seen Raver evacuating LCUs from Malaya - so I'm guessing he's setting up Fortress Singapore - any escaping transports would have been spotted (I hope) as they fled.

Enjoy.

Oh it was soooooo good to see a bomb go through the deck of that jap flat top. Pity it didn't do any real damage. The boy wonder failed to clear his subs from around PH as fast as he said he would and my ASW TF struck a number of times sinking one and damaging another No moves on Java yet and only a slow push south down the Malay peninsula, however looks like Luskan is making a move for Rangoon....I expect him to be there in the next four to five game days maybe even 7 at the lastest.

RE: Week 1 Summary

Post by Luskan »

The battle continues on to day 10 - I grind Rabaul further down, chase some retreating allied troops down the road from Tarakan to Samarinda, retake Krung Thep (raver's nuisance raid), take Vigan, bombard Tuguegarao (waiting for more troops to roll up before I storm the forts) and finish off Iliolo and over 6000 allied troops go into custody.

Ten days in and I have two fears - firstly that Raver has managed to pull LCUs (especially the dangerous australian ones) out of Malaya.  He's certainly not bothered at Tavoy and it looks like he's retreated back to Rangoon - but there are troops missing.  I hope to find them down the road at mandalay or further into the jungle.  I certainly don't want them to survive my early advantage (although if I know Raver, he's piling troops into Akyab left right and centre - the allied player can get enough troops in there to stem a japanese Indian offensive and launch a counter attack from within their own air cover - I won't be making that mistake again, although I've found a better way to handle it).

Secondly, Raver's being completely un bull headed with his chinese troops.  So far none of them have charged forward in stupid attacks where they are easily routed.  Once routed, due to the constant lack of supply and HQ chinese troops STAY routed - and the best way to control China is to rout all those troops at the start of the game (just look at what a rout did an the IJ division next to Hanoi! Will be weeks before they're ready to fight again!).  Raver, unusually, is being careful and conservative.

Operation Elation was given a green light today - several months earlier than I'd expected to need to.  Elation will take some weeks to ready as well, and when it comes off (if it works) I will be able to hear Raver's teeth gnashing from here (and if it doesn't work I'll have to bomb melbourne).
