Post by Big B »

Sorry guys but my mind has been elsewhere lately and I haven't kept a tight grip on my AAR's day by day.

But here is the latest.

An interesting air cobat in this one - (8x KI-44 vs 12 I-16 Chinese... 1 damaged each)

On the broader fronts not too much new - the war is grinding on. The Japanese took Zamboanga and Cagayan (boy has my mind been elsewhere - I never even noticed), but the main US/Filipino Army has gotten stronger - we're still very combat effective.

In China, the Japanese are making a play for Wuchow - we have some surprises for the...

06 JAN 42

Well here's what happaned last night, the major highlights I noted are that the submarine war continues unabated, the ground war in China is heating up - as the Japanese continue their campaign against guerilla units - they are also moving in on Wuchow and Paotow in some strength. The Chinese launched a delibereate attack against Japanese forces at Paotow today - and sent them packing in retreat...sources close to Chaing tell me more of the same is in store for the Japs at Wuchow - we'll keep an eye out there.

In the Philippines, American fortunes in Mindanao are collapsing, but on Luzon Wainright's troops are still holding out well, we still hold Manila and Clark Field/San Fernando while fighting continues off in the hills.

Meanwhile, Imperial Japanese forces continue to expand in the South Pacific Theatre - today they took the Admiralty Islands.

(Sorry for the lack of graphics - as I get more time I'll put them in regularly).

07 JAN 42

January 7th started with the Imperial Japanese Navy bombarding US installations on Canton Is. Must be testing our defenses in the area and seeing how far they can push before we put up a fight...
Jap troops continue landings at Manado, but coastal guns at least contested the landing and hit the destroyer Isonami.

On the Air Campaign front - the expected heavy aerial bombardments have materialized and are becoming a regular event over Singapore and the Philippines.

On the ground in China the KMT forces at Wuchow attacked (as Chinese HQ hinted they would) and have driven large numbers of Japanese troops from the area...

China Command reports units returning to base after punishing attacks against Chinese units in the Wuchow area. In other areas, captured bandits assisting new units in close combat drills.

Pressure continues to build on Allied forces in the Philippines and Singapore combat areas. I expect cracks to start developing in the defenses around Clark in the next few days. General Hdqters putting together final plans on invasion of DEI. KB pilots are being rounded up from the Geisha Bars and returned to their ships. Air units up to full complement of planes and ships fueled and ready to go. Time to start earning that Zero bonus. Course set and should arrive at .......................

IJN surface units have broke into Indian Ocean and will start raiding shipping lanes.

I would not be to concerned about that ship around Canton Island. Its on a peaceful research expedition.[:D]

Well, - The Japanese have withdrawn from Wuchow... but strangest of all they appear to have also abondoned Milne Bay (Gili Gili)..[&:]

In the Philippines, the decisive battle for San Fernando/Clarke Field appears to be underway - Japanese units are moving out of San Marcelino and are entering the Clarke Field hex, we will soon know if the Philippines can hold out for long.

meanwhile a Jap TF has been tracked going past Singapore, up the straits - and is now down on the West side of Sumatra, what could they be up to?

will try to fill in with pictures tonight...

Heavy Japanese air raids continue against Singapore and the Philippines - as was to be expected.

My big news for January 9th was that USAFFE have passed their latest test in the battle for Luzon. Japanese Army forces finally moved out of San Marcelino to the Clark Field hex - trying to break the stalemate in the mountains to the north and Manila in the south - and in a tough battle the Japanese were soundly beaten and sent packing. The USAFFE may be there a while after all...

In other action in China, in an equal air combat between 9x KI-44 and 9x I-16c, each side lost one aircraft. Meanwhile Japanese ground combat operations against CCP Guerrilla units continues, giving the Chinese Central Army time to regroup and redeploy.

Nothing too new here - except that I-16c's are proving they are capable of tangling with KI-27 Nates.
The war grinds on, ... awaiting more dramatic developments.

By the way - after action intelligence showed that the damaged Nate was lost, and a Chinese Pilot got credit for a kill...

RADIO TOKYO REPORTS

The Southern Command reports that all resistance in the southern Philippines has come to a halt. Army and Navy forces have cornered the last remaining allied forces in the area of Butuan and forced their surrender. Major gains have been made in the Northern Islands. The defenses north of Clark Field are showing signs of collapse. Several Allied units were seen fleeing back towards Clark. Isolated units will soon face the decision to surrender or face total elimination. Army units continue to pound the units around Manilia. As additional units arive in the next few days, Manilia will soon be cleared of Allied units.

At Singapore, Japanese air units continue to pound the defenses of the city at will. Gen Yamashita reports that unless the defenders surrender soon they will face an all out attack in the next few days that will cause them untold casualties.

Army planes attacking Ragoon today reported shooting down numerous British aircraft. All Japanese aircraft returned safely to their bases.

Singkawang fell to Naval Landing Forces today. Dutch defenders took to the hills after a token resistance.

Canton Isand fell to a raid by Japanes Naval Forces. They destroyed several aircraft and defense facilites before leaving the island. Numerous prisoners were taken and will be sent to Japan for discussion with Naval Intelligence.

On the home front the price of oil plunged again for the third straight day on fears of a flooded market............[:D]

As "Radio Tokyo" reported, Japanese Forces siezed Canton Is in a surprise move yesterday... Allied High command doubts this is a "raid" .
Furthermore, mysterious Jap TF has been spotted loitering about the area (see map) - could this be the KB?

In the Philippines, a Filipino attack at Tuguegarao failed to dislodge the Japanese troops there, while a strong Japanese Army attack was succesful in driving a Filipino unit south toward Clark Field.

USAFFE also acknowledged that organized resistance on Mindanao has ceased.

ABDA here:

Sorry I haven't posted as often as I should. It's busy in the East Indies. Men and material are being shuffled about. Japanese presence here is almost nil. We're fortifying strongpoints and expect to put up fierce resistance to any Jap attempt to take anything at the eastern end of our command area.

On a good point: We have lost territoy, but everything we have lost is something we temporarily abandoned long before. In a very short time we expect to put up a fight to regain those areas.

Supply is still a little critical, but we'll manage. Morale and confidence are high. The men know this is not a retreat, following our battle plan, we're actually winning the war for the East Indies.

ABDA out.

North Luzon outer defense line crumbles

Post by Big B »

12 JAN 42

USAFFE News: Tuguegarao fell today, along with the outer defenses north of Clark Field. Filipino units retreated back to the main defense line at Clark. American & Filipino troops dig in and prepare for the worst.

Over China, in air combat over Wuchow, 7 Chinese I-16c's took on 22 Nates and 15 Sonias. The Chinese lost one fighter to the Nates before tearing into the Sonias and downing one.

IJN submarines, operating in a 'wolfe pack' torpedoed two Allied AKs off Amboina, followed up by an air raid from a Japanese Carrier. Total combined losses were three freighters - according to ABDA Command.
Also in the Dutch East Indies, Allied naval forces delivered a crushing surprise naval bombardment of Japanese forces at Manado. Follow up reconnaissance confirmed serious damage inflicted on Japanese shore installations.

Meanwhile, Japanese troops continue bombarding Moulmein, British forces continue stiff resistance.

ABDA here:

Well, we got caught with our pants down at Amboina. We have no choice but to stick around and get as much men and supply off as possible. But an air attack and the loss of a ship is not going to stop our resolve to hold the base. Any landing attempted there will be met by very strong resisitance. This very minor set-back has done nothing to our overall plans. We got a little complacent, failing to realize that anything at anytime is possible.

Morale is still high, as is confidence. He'll never take the "Iron Triangle".

13 JAN 42

Todays' News - Japanese Army Air Force pilots flying Oscars proved today that they can easily master Lysanders, Wirraways, and Buffalos (especially when they outnumber them 3:1)

Japanese submarines and aircraft continue to punish Allied shipping at Amboina.

On Luzon fresh Philippine Army reinforcments have taken up old defensive positions in the hills North of Clark, in an effort to hold back the Japanese Army and keep them from linking up with units coming from Manila and San Marcelino.

At the Philippine Capital, Manila, US & Filipino forces turned back a determined and heavy Japanese assault on the city - inflicting very heavy casualties on the invading Japanese troops.

The Japanese light carrier that struck Amboina for the last two days is now unspotted - anyones guess as to where it is heading.

Radio Tokyo Reports

Navy surface ships, submarines and aircraft continue to attack Allied shipping around the Dutch port of Amboina. The port has also sufferred a strong bombardment from Battleships and Heavy Cruisers. Numerous merchant and minor warships were sunk during the battle. IJN sources believe the shipping is in the area as part of an effort to reenforce the base. Enemy warships were being used on nuisance raids on Japanese bases and offered no protection to the merchant ships.

In other areas: IJA units continue to wear down the defenses around Clark Field and Manila. The defenders are putting up strong resistance in areas. The defenders are being kept under constant pressure from land and air units while General Homa gathers forces for the final push.
Singapore continues to suffer daily air attack. The defenders are being worn down in preperation for the land attack to follow in the next several days.

Imperial Naval HQ reports several futher moves into the South Pacific are in the planning stages. This is part of the plan to push the Allied defences away from important Japanese bases.

On the home front: The Tokyo Zoo is going to open an exhibit showing all the new animals that have been aquired in the recently occupied areas..........

RE: January 42 grinds on

Post by Big B »

14 JAN 42

From the Dutch East Indies - a series of night engagements occurred last night at Amboina, Strong Japanese Naval Forces stormed in and destroyed every Allied merchant ship and small escort in the area - and then proceeded to bombard Amboina itself.
Fortunately for the Allies, most of the troops and supply were already unloaded, and although the shipping losses were high - the land losses were not too bad.
During the same evening, ships under ABDA command bombarded Efate, causing unknown damage to shore installations.
A Japanese light carrier group followed up the night's bombardment of Amboina by sweeping up surviving shipping in the waters south of the island.
It seems the Japanese are making a show of just who owns the air and sea in the lower Dutch East Indies.

In other news, Japanese Air Forces continue heavy bombardment of Singapore and Luzon in the Philippines, as well as a move in force by the Japanese Army into Clark/San Fernando area on Luzon.
An all-out counter attack has been ordered by USAFFE HQ, and will go in today...the fate of the American and Filipino troops on Luzon hangs in the balance.

15 JAN 42

Dateline Luzon, after the latest all-out attack on the Clark/San Fernando plain, US/Filipino troops beat back another determined Japanese Army assault - this time involving tanks of the 7th IJA Tank Regiment, 14th Army HQ, and the 2nd Div IJA. Losses were heavy on both sides, but saw the Japanese retreat yet again back to San Marcileno. USAFFE spirits are high...if only the War Department will come through with the promised reinforcements and supply - the troops are confident they could hold on indefinitely.

In the Dutch East Indies things were quiet today after yesterday's turmoil.

In Burma the status quo prevails.

16 JAN 42

A slower day on the ground, a busy day in the air. The usual bases were heavily bombed - Singapore, Wuchow, Rangoon, Manila.

Over Batavia and Rangoon there was heavy air action with 76 Oscars jumping Wirrawyas, Lysanders, and Buffalos trying to take off, and over Batavia Zeros jumped more Brewster's scrambling to intercept - with the Allies taking the brunt of the losses in both actions.
