Stldiver US vs Zemke4 Jap Nik Mod Modified

Post by stldiver »

Hello Everyone, This will be a Joint AAR between myself (Tim) and Zemke4 (Patrick).

We are playing a modified Nik Mod full campaign that Patrick modified. My last two CHS opponenents have dissapeared leaving me with just one game now into July 42 vs Jutland13. Thus I answered Patrick post for an opponent, we are already up to Dec 17th (wanted to make sure opponent stuck this time), so some of the information on the early post will have forsight involved. I live in the United States in the Midwest (St. Louis, Cards Win!), Patrick is serving in the US forces in Afganistan we have been able to do 1 turn a day currently.

Patrick can give the details of his mod, but basically it is Niks mod with a boost in Japanese experiance in pilots and a big boost in initial pilot pools I think 650/300 for Jap. For the allies he has significantly reduce the experiance of US,British, Dutch airforce to about 35 exp approx, he bumped the US CV experiance a little and the marine pilots, He stated he increased US production as his last opponent quit due to large loss of planes. I never played or looked at Nik mod, but reading the boards realized that air to air was less deadly and AA a little more effective.

We also started a historical first turn, Sub On, 2 turn days (a first for me), Max 6 ASW, I believe that covers most of it.

With 2 day turns and historical there where no orders entered for the 1st two days and the computer took over. Basically there was the Pearl strike which did only moderate damage, only 2 to 3 torps total went off, and the force automatically withdrew, usual invasion in PI with usual results.

Only significant factor was Wake Island held and all Japanese forces disapeared from the area.

Thus begins the story[8D]

Dec 9 and 10th KB runs into DD forces

Post by stldiver »

Well on the first turn that orders could be entered, My thoughts were new opponent, lets assume he's not aggressive, so I sent 5 ASW groups of DD's, DMS out from Midway to clear out the subs, figuring the KB would support other forces (wrong), I also decided to error on the side that Patrick would be slow to methodical (wrong again). Thus here are the result of Dec 9th and 10th as I see it.

This day marked a shift in the KB attacking Naval attack thus hitting my ASW forces, this would have not been a catastrophe as I figured this would happen and sent all back to pearl with auto disband, unfortunatly I must have missed some orders as the loss of DD's and DMS's show these forces went to Pearl but did not disband [&:]

This is recoverable, figured they would hit one more day, I would write these off as lesson learned.

Dec 12th, KB hits Pearl a third time.

Post by stldiver »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/12/41

This day started with various ASW/ Sub actions, no significant results. The KB struck the ASW groups and the Port in the PM, Ouch again, thats the 3rd time Pearl is hit.
He also begins landings around Northern New Guinea, and I see forces heading to Kutching and Menado, can I react to these? Where are US CV's? The KB moves but still stays close to Pearl on the west side of the Islands.

Well definatly the forces in Pearl are very badly damaged. The KB probably will retire now, but I am not taking chances, everyone will stay in port. I will try to move some surface forces to intercept the lightly protected convoys the next two days.

Dec 13th Japanese apply the Pressure

Post by stldiver »

Patrick may have started with a historical start but that is where slow ended, Another day with the KB sailing around to the east side of Pearl and hitting the Port again. Also he has quickly set up bases in Malaya with aircraft and is bombing my transports that had hope to evacuate singapore. He must have used transport planes to move up base forces. This is the first I have seen this, so I am caught by surprise, the next 4 days will not be kind to my transports and Pearl and I find out, my airforce cannot even fight, when I have 6 fighters vs 6 bombers, they still push aside my fighters.

Patrick was correct when we started, it will be a hard road for me in the beginning.

With 2 day turns, I do not spot most of these landing forces, I will need to get better spotters. I have realized my airforce can not even fight the Japanese, and with the experiance in the 30's I have set most units to sit on the ground and train. Very disheartening, but I realize my time will come. He is definatly going for the undefended bases, and has invaded just north of Rabaul, it should follow shortly.

The KB must be low on strike points for his aircraft, he has completly ruined most of the shipping in Pearl, I wonder if he plans to invade the way he keeps the KB here, but I still have Wake and Midway, the next few weeks will tell the tale.

Dec 15th Clouds defend Pearl, Lexington strikes

Post by stldiver »

Clouds stop one strike on Pearl as he moves back south of the Islands, The Lady Lex shows up! He landed forces at Gasmata last turn and the Lexington moved in on transports pulling out. He also lands at Lunga! More death to my transports as I am having trouble getting them to withdraw, somehow like the DD's earlier I am missing orders and they stay in place at Georgetown, there are no troops there to evacuate. [:(]

Well he has seen my two carriers are seperated and both score strikes, The KB definalty will have to address this as the Lexington will stop invasions around Rabaul as he does not have LBA close by and a CVL will not handle the Lady. I am learning that his increased experience pilots are deadly in naval bombing, I am just trying to get my ship out of the area.

Dec 16th The Enterprise trys to defend Baker

Post by stldiver »

More death for my Transports in Malaya, but at Ambonia I temporarily stop an invasion with Boise, Houston and company. Also the Enterprises hits a convoy going after Baker, unfortunatly there are two many ships to stop the invasions. The KB moves 240 miles SW of Hilo, will it strike back? It tried the day before but clouds stopped it, it has to be low on Operation points for its aircraft.

Current State of Affairs

Post by stldiver »

Well I will give my view of the first few days. Patrick warned me it was best to pull back my airforce, he was correct, they are pretty much useless. He is moving his forces at a very good pace considering the historical start. Pearl Harbor is utter devastation, in another AAR Raver and Luskan talk that it is better to damage then to sink, as it clogs the repair yards, Well between the transports in Malaya and Pearl my fleet has never been so incapacitated, I would not have believe them before, but do now.

The score is
Jap 2425
Allied 7527, still to early for this to matter

Air losses
Allied 482
Jap 239

Top 5 aircraft lost
120 P40B
60 Val
58 P-26A
45 Kate
42 Catalina
(there are 30 zero's lost also)

Army Losses
Allied 482
Jap 17

Ship Losses
Allied 24 sunk for 165 points (many more will sink [:(]) 6DD, 3DMS
Jap 16 sunk for 100 points 1 CL, 1 small DD, 1 SS

The KB will probably need to stop the Enterprise, but it cannot get there for 3 days, and it has to be low on fuel and op points, as it has been around the replenshiment force.
There appears another landing headed for Palembang, it is two days away, My bombers are set to intercept, they are again mid 30's experiance, not much hope. His landings continue. At Rabaul the Lexington will rule the area, but I am sure he has the mini KB close and his air quality is something I don't envision wanting to see. But I need to delay him here as he already has Lunga and Gasmata, he is bold.

I will let him talk about his view now.

Starting Parameters

Post by stldiver »

Here is a copy of the information Patrick has sent me on his mod.

Ok here is the modified Nik Mod 5.0 Campaign Game. As I stated before, the largest changes have been an increase in Japan experience levels, all plane maneuverability ratings changed based on IL-2 Pacific Fighters Compare Program 3.01, and China fort levels reset to stock levels. Also, the Dutch have been downgraded across the board. US Navy and Marine starting Squadron experience has been increased, this is to provide that core of pilots that will fight the future G-Canals or where ever we end up fighting. Almost all allied prodution has been increased. Japan pilot pool now 600/350 and some Allied pilot pool increased, mostly British by 100, Japan training program is 45/35. I would strongly advise not to try and mess with the Japanese early on, as they are very battle harded. Wait till you have built up forces and Squadrons, then wear them down in air battles, resulting in a battle of attrition, just my advise, and it will make for a long and unpleasent start for you I know. Another fairly major modification was to level bombers, the bombs should not be as accurate, nor as deadly to ships. I did reset them to stock number of bombs, which double them from the Nik mod, but their accuracy should be less. Also Level bomber duribility has been cut, as well as Allied starting experience level for bomber squadrons. So what all this means is overall at the start the Japs will be stronger and have less restincel, but as time goes on will face ever increasing more experienced Allied air units.

I have attached a zip folder with the scenario, just unzip right into the scenario folder of the game. I did not re write any of the scenario background, it is a product of the Nik Mod. What lead me to create this Mod was a game with another guy who quit after he ran out of allied fighter aircraft, (or so he says). So I increased the prodution numbers early for allied planes, and by 1943 the Allies should have a big advanatge in numbers of planes and trained pilots.

Ok here is the game file, historic start, PDU on, Sub Doctrine On, two day turn cycle. Not sure if you will be able to issue orders this turn or not, I know I could not due to the historical start. If I remember correctly, you will not be able to, just watch the replay, which is the opening of the War. Then we will be able to give orders. Good Luck, Good Fight...Long live the Emperor!!

Dec 17th

Post by stldiver »

This was a good day for the allies, at least as good as it gets in Dec 41, many bad things continue to happen but my surface forces and CV Enterprise score some kills. I will try an adopt a new format.

Central Pacific

The KB is moving SW from Hawaii towards Palmyra, it is about in the middle of both. Pearls airfields are repaired. I spotted some subs around Pearl but further out, when they pulled back from Pearl most where headed to the west coast.

The day before at Baker I had spotted another TF besides the one I bombed so I decided to break off 2 CA's and 2DD from CV group and set them to Hold at Baker and here are the results! Both Japanese TF's attacked.

Dec 18th all US CV's vanish

Post by stldiver »

This day had no major highlights but the next two days should heat back up as forces are 120 miles from Palembang and I am sending in some surface strikes.

Central Pacific
The Surface task force at Baker finishes off the last Transport group and bags a base force none of the unit made it to Baker Island, so no airfield there at the moment. The CV Enterprise vanishes, and the KB shows up 240 miles Northeast of Palmyra, he was probably hoping to catch some ships. [:-]
Bettys also attack CA's at Baker from Marshal Island area, I didn't know they could reach that far, I will have to move these ships with the KB and Bettys around.

I need to destroy the AP's in this area as he doesn't have many to start with and it will slow him down till they come from Tokyo.

Entertaining day, SS-36 scored a hit and he had not launched airstrikes so I decided to send my fighters out to attack his transports, the AM phase confirmed the damage done, but no big results, the PM strike netted some damage. He also chose that time to begin his bombing of Manila.

Dec 19th & 20th The battle for Palembang begins

Post by stldiver »

Results of Dec 19th and 20th 1942

Well there is no denying that Patrick is not slowing down. He sent in AP's with a small escort to Palembang first, and it meet with my PT boats, but they turned and ran after a few torps missed, then the BB's and a CA group show up to bombard, probably a timing issue, I lose a few PT boats but all in all the transports don't drop any troops off and no torpedoes hit (other then a scare factor they seem useless). I am sure since the BB's have parked at Palembang the transports will be back.

In the air the Betties and Nells sink the last ships fleeing Singapore, the AK Boero that was hit yesterday is sunk today will a baseforce aboard.
Another AK with troops is intercepted by a surface group headed to Palembang and sunk with troops. The ground forces seem less inclined to board transports now.

The AK torpedoed yesterday by my sub sinks.

Patrick begins the bombardment of Tarakan and a CVL shows up to attack shiping south of Tarakan, it appears that is the next target.
The Carriers Kates badly maul a tanker. and the BB's forces pummel Tarakan badly mauling two AP's in port, just one more day and they would have left. He is quick.

The KB has moved southwest of Palmyra at cruise speed it is currently 300 miles SW of Palmyra. He hasn't meet with his replenishment force yet, but it must be close.

The CV Enterprise refuels at Canton, it was spotted by a Glen, so it will move out.
The CV Saratoga is still unspotted and has not spotted anything. Patrick continues to bomb Rabaul with fighters and betties from Truk. I have moved out all planes at the moment.

The sub/ASW war has heated up with several misses and a couple of hits by the Japanese Subs, at Pearl he sinks a DMS for some damage, but losses the SS 1-6 to depth charges.

Jolo, Tawi Tawi, Wasile, Miri, Tuguegaro, Mersing, Georgetown, Victoria Point, and San Jose all fall, no surprises here.

China pretty quiet with his forces massing still.

Dec 21st and 22nd 42, CV push thru Maccasar strait

Post by stldiver »

The 21st and 22nd doesn't have any major catastrophes but as the Allies I know that I am on the wipping end of the stick. Just have to figure it will be a while before I can take it out of Patrick's hand and do some wumpin of my own.

The biggest thrust was Patrick moved two small CV's from in front of Tarakan to Balikpapan, covering the Mutsu and company who raced down to bombard the same port. [:@] Once again I was caught with my pants down (I need to empty my pants a lot off late), His surface force intercepted a couple of AP newly arrived at port they are at the bottom of it now, then the CV's spotted my CL's and DD at Maccassar waiting to pounce on unsupported landings, unfortunatly the BB's were at Tarakan so my forces where on hold, not anymore, some are on the bottom.

At Palembang he pounds with the BB's but has not moved the transports in, they are holding off 120 miles to the NW, my planes ineffectivly try to damage them, no hits of course but the experiance has moved from mid 30's to mid 40 to low 50's, I think they know how to navigate now.

I cannot intercept the BB's as the Bettys and CVL's provide cover, time to pull back some more. The merchant men have gone over my head requesting that I no longer control their ships as I don't seem to understand they don't have armored hulls and should be protected. Thus I am immediatly pulling them far back from the front.

More of my transports damaged the last few days, sink at sea.

In the subwar some depth charge for no effect and the SS 1-64 sinks the ML Pro Pratia NW of Darwin, it was leaving the Java area as it could not find any mines to load.

The CV Lexington the past few days had retired to Tulagi to refuel and check out if transports where still around Lunga, finding none she headed north and on 22nd found 2AK and another ship NW of them, With the NW one under cloud cover the 2 AK's were quickly dispatched, no troops so they must have had supplies.

At the same time Patrick brought a large CA/DD force to pound Rabaul, apparently he feels that the Lady Lex has left the area, thats not the case and tommorrow on the 23rd, she will pay a visit to any ships in the area. Out of Truk LBA range hopefully.

He also has two ships unloading at Lae on the 22nd and I have dispatched the CL Adelaide and a DD who where hunting northern New Guinea to intercept, they should be fine unless the CA's and DD move to support from Rabaul.

The KB has moved to 60 miles NE of Canton, he appears to be hunting the CV Enterprise (who wouldn't) the Enterprise of course has left that area. Once again I believe the KB has to be very low on fuel, it will probably turn NW to refuel and rearm probably at Tarawa is where it would meet its replenishment force, I am not sure as I have never spotted it.

Some minor assaults in China as he positions his forces and I position mine, and he bombs Rangoon harbor sinking one AK that was damaged earlier and damages again the TK there.

I will now post some of the highlights.

Dec 23 to 24th 1942, My cruisers are fishfood

Post by stldiver »

Well in 4 days Patrick has been able to demolish my two surface groups who were hiding in the background waiting to pounce, both recieved their demise thru the air.

At Rabaul area I had the CA Australia, Canberra, CL Perth with DD hiding at Shortlands waiting for an opportunity, it came on christmas eve with Betty's from Rabaul, obviously I didn't figure they would find me or strike me that far. The Australia sank initially and the other two will probably sink on christmas day no doubt. The CV Lexington found no ships at Rabaul (he was probably trying to lure me in, it worked), and fortunatly she was not spotted, and she was closer to Rabaul the the surface group. Once again time to vanish. The Adelaide did not find any shipping in Lae, but it was captured so she headed to safer harbors.

In the Central Pacific the KB has moved all the way down to Wallis Island, not sure where it is going next, but that is far from home. It hasn't found the CV Enterprise yet.

In SRA, the CVL's finish off the CL force that was attacked the day before, and SS 1-154 finishes off the damaged DD Banckert as it tried to enter Kendari Harbor. He continues airstrikes vs Kendari, and Landings finally begin at Palembang and Tarakan, hopefully with all the days of pounding it damages the oil production but I am not sure that can be the case. My PI PT boats die at Tarakan but damage a CS with shell fire?

He also sent 4 PC to Batavia to handle my minesweepers on ASW vs a sub there, unfortunatly for him the DD Van Ghent was still alive (reported torpedoed and sunk the other day, lies I tell you all lies). It damage and chased off the PC, but the MSW must leave the area now.

I lost a AP at Banjarmisin and another at Balikapan, I thought they had orders to get out, but give some more kills to the deadly CVL's.

Good news was 3 hudsons with escorts break in and attempt to bomb CVL Zuiho they missed of course, moving the torpedo planes closer for a christmas present.

SS-36 sinks, it was depthcharged several days ago, didn' think it was in that much danger, alas, it may have been an unreported attack.
Numerouse ASW strikes vs his forces and mine but none of note for damage.

Rangoon gets heavy bombing and airfield damage is mounting, time to reposition those planes.

He begins bombing Batavia, there are few areas in SRA that his bombers cannot reach. I need to get a torpedo into his CVL's, I am vectoring in the subs.

Bombing of Changsa continues, I pulled out the chinese airforce, let them bomb. No other news from China.

Dec 25th Dec 26th 1942 Tarakan falls, Palembang shudders

Post by stldiver »

Well there were many air flights on both sides to no great conclusions. The fighters at manila finally caught 9 nells unescorted and did better then 1 to 3. But the main events were Patrick began his ground attacks at Palembang and Tarakan. Tarakan fell to the first assault and Palembang held both days, but the forts came down, so tommorrow looks like the last hurrah. I paid PP's and pulled the combat and base force from Sinkep Island and these are defending Palembang with its Garrison. It is being assaulted by the 23 mixed Bde.

The CVL's pulled around Kendari and laid waste to some Minesweepers that were harrassing his sub. They all perished.

No news at all around Rabaul, and the KB stood at Wallis Island as he invades there and Naomea atoll in that area. That is actually a good spot to cover his landings on Canton, Pago, and Suva. He has informed me I should be more concerned about the South Pacific as he means to cut it off in this game. That is what my other worthy opponent has tried to do, so I started out with that defence in mind. Patrick seems very efficent with his forces and my CV's have only delayed him a few days. Granted that is a few days more I desperatly need.

He also pointed out my excessive transports losses will come back to hurt me and I concur. I will state the totals at the end of the month.
I only have a gage on 2 divisions and 2 Bde. He has not locked horns in the PI yet, so I must figure he is sending those divisions to the south. Maybe an early grab for New Zealand. In his mod he also stated he upped the support for the japanese troops and their experiance, they are more deadly but he has to manage his manpower pools more.

Dec 27th thru 28th 42 Palembang falls, Rabual invaded

Post by stldiver »

Well the 27th and 28th represented more position by the Japanese the actual combat, he is regrouping for his next push and is finishing his last ones.

Only 2 ships sank for me an AK damaged weeks ago finally dies and SS perch hit a mine two days ago at Truk and it gets depthcharged there and sinks.

The Japanese lose a PC Shona Maru outside of Palembang as it encounters fleeing PT boats. Also DD Fubuki hits a mine at Batavia, guess he wanted to send something bigger then PC's do deal with my ships.

The KB has moved 180 miles NW of Pago and did recon off Pago also I sited 6 AP's at Wallis, so it looks like Pago is due for a visit.

Palembang falls, it was a 3 to 1 barely on a fort level one. a shame it couldn't hold another day, but they did their best..

Rabual and Shortland are invaded, shortland by a single transport. He captures varies bases that are undefended around PI, also no moves at PI, looks like Singapore is first on his list for aggression. He did attack at Naga but lost at 2 to 1 odds.

In Malaya Patrick Paradropped on Moulmein but I still had a bde there so they were stopped, I also had the Bde on the move so Moulmein is empty now. Interesting how that worked, they fight the paratroopers, then move out. The second day more paratroopers drop but don't fight, probably due to damage from first days' encounter. This just means another 2 day delay before he has a base that far north operational.

SS I-166 tryed to torpedo and ASW force and recieved 6 hits and Heavy damage, I will keep an eye out for this one sinking.

Mini KB moves SW of Kendari, not sure where it is heading west, but planes on naval attack and ships are avoiding.

Ambonai invaded.

Here are some results.

Post by stldiver »

Well I noticed all titles where 1942 when actually its 1941 [:'(]

The last two days were very quiet,.
A figher sweep of Batavia by Zeros crushes my fighters.
Landings at Pontiana,
Shortland Falls, Maulean falls and Rabaul falls (there was only a base force there)
It was confirmed mini KB is the mini KB it patrolled north of Darwin trying to tag my ASW ships none there.
Other then that very quiet, Patrick said he's reorganizing for the next big push.

Dec 31st to Jan 1st 1942 Out with the Old Combat and Month totals

Post by stldiver »

The year ended with an invasion about to go off at Wake, he bombarded and pulled back and it looks like various transports are there for Jan 2nd. East of midway a supply convoy overan SS I-7 and put it on fire. The KB down by Pago sat at wallis, the early report of 6 AP's was probably its replensihment ships, so it should be refueled and ready to move out on Jan 2nd.

Around Rabaul area no activity.

In Malay and Burma 2 Tank Rgt one at a time shock across river 60 miles NE of Rangoon and tangle with 1st Burma Bde, it holds. Paradrop at Pagan and Japanese capture it.

In SRA he captures Kendari with the 16th Div, he is coming strong down here. The mini KB hit Darwin's port, I guess he figured the ASW force was there, Kates took it heavy from AA and he only damage one MSW and an AS.

In the Phillipines I learned about strafing in my other AAR (I was the student), so I turned the P-40B at Manila loose and they gave good results, hits on ships did good damage to troops, doesn't look like much to ships, but the soldiers on deck made good targets. I will continue this till he makes me stop. Lots of shipping spotted heading south and southwest around the PI's. My Catalina's are valuable there.

SS KXVII surfaces and sinks an AP in south china sea , 18th aviation Rgt is seen being rescued.

China deliberate attacks at Yunan and Wuchow repulsed but Yunan losses a fort.

Ok, how do I feel about this month and the mod. At first I was shocked by the lack of air results, but then I compare to stock and thus need to modify my perspective, after looking at the air losses 675 allied aircraft to 378 japanese I cannot be to dissapointed though most of the Japanese losses were due to flak. Here are the top 8 losses plus Betties (always important)

Type Total Killed
P40B 131
Kate 65
P26A 61
Val 61
Nell 59
P40E 57
Catalina 51
Zero 47
Betty 9

On the ships I was very stubborn and unlearned in the two day turns and lost many transport ships due to super experianced enemy bombers, Also my CA's and CL's surface forces were caught by surprise. My DD's were lost around Pearl when they went out on ASW patrol early, though in long run that may have saved the BB's from sinking because he diverted attacks to them allowing the BB's to reduce floatation and fire damage. Here are the sunk ships according to the allied intel screen, accurate on US, pretty close on the Japanese.

Life is full of the unexpected, I saw the invasion of Wake with the naval bombardments. The CV Saratoga had just escorted some transports to Midway and was halfway to Wake in a perfect opportunity to mangle the incoming fleets. No worries on LBA none close, no worries on KB, the mini was just spotted at Darwin and the Maxi was at Wallis. Wrong, Patrick has split the Maxi KB and the Saratoga slugged it out with the Kaga and Soryu, unfortunatly even thou she got the 1st strike off only 9 bombers and 6 torpedo planes broke thru, none hit. I can't say the same for the return strike. Foul weather helped mitigate the damage as both forces were 180 miles apart and set to patrol.

This was prophetic due to Patricks statements at the beginning that I would lose my CV's singly if I kept them apart and I should just pull them out. I feel that a threat never used is no threat. Not much action besides that great one, you live for those moments, one moment ready to see my bombers and torpedoe planes mangle an invasion force, the next I see my spotters spot the Kaga 180 miles away to thoughs of, well I will lose the Saratoga but will at least damage one CV, to Hmmm I could of done that better[8|].

Here are the reports, I will let them do the talking for today.
