AWD Problems with Air and Sub attacks

Post by 32shaw »

I'm having major problems with AWD. #1- Even though my German subs had an attack factor of 4, when 6 of them attacked 5 WA ships, 3 of the subs registered as base attack value 0, two vs heavy fleets and one vs a light fleet, while other attacks vs light fleets and transports registered as base attack value 4.

#2 I can't get my German fighters to attack enemy planes other than fighters. For example, if I have 6 German fighters attack 2 Russian fighters and 2 Russian light bombers, 4 of the German fighters attack the 2 Russian fighters and the other 2 German fighters do not conduct air to air attacks.

#3 I'm getting crazy results on suppression by Russian infantry units vs my German air units. Russian land units with only anti-air attack level 3 are generating suppression results equal to the total of the 3 dice rolled. With no modifying evasion factors, the German light bomber planes (evasion level 6) show the numbers 1 or 2 (in green) for "bombard evasion roll". As a result, they end up with large suppression levels and are useless in their attacks vs the Russian land units.

Is anyone else having these problems? Should I try downloading the game again? Last, a couple of years into the game, the Japanese repair screen stopped showing anything other than the number of supply points remaining. Captured factories, resource areas etc. stopped being shown, which has the result of preventing the Japanese from raising their production level. I need help!!! 32shaw

1) Subs have a large chance of failing to engage surface ships. This is to represent the fact that WW2 subs couldnt challenge surface fleet for sea superiority. This is displayed as that '0' attack.

2) You have to be bombing airfields. Non-Fighter/non-CAGs wont participate in air to air attacks and can only be hit on the ground. If your Fighters dont have increase Ground Attack, you'll have to include some TAC or SAC to take out the planes on the ground.

3) Sound like just bad luck. The EV roll is a number from 1 to your units EV value. So, with EV 6, its rolling from 1-6. The total of their dice is divided by that EV roll to determine suppression. Yes, it very random, but over times it should even out.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  Those are some major changes from WAW regarding sub, air to air, and air to ground attacks and they will dramatically alter some of the key tactics I've used in WAW.  One of my favorites was to raise my light bombers to attack level 7 or 8 and evasion level 7, then build a dozen or more and turn them loose on large enemy land force concentrations.  Now that I see how even infantry can cause significant suppression levels in bombers, I'm going to have to rethink my plans.  Did the developers of AWD intend to significantly reduce the effectiveness of light bomber attacks on land units?

With respect to fighters vs enemy bombers, in WAW the enemy bombers were subject to air to air combat in general attacks involving air and land units on both sides.  Is this also true in AWD?  If so, when your real aim is to have your fighters destroy enemy bombers, you might be able to make a sacrificial land attack by one unit in order to get the enemy bombers up in the air to be shot down by your fighters.

What about the problem I had with the Japanese repair screen ceasing to list railroads, factories and resource centers?  Has that happened to other players?   Thanks, 32shaw

I have never seen the problem with the repair screen blanking like that and I probably played Japan the most out of all of the testers. That definately sound like something you should post a save for for Joel or Jan. As a workaround, you can try repairing them directly from the main screen instead.

For bombing, yes, one of the goals of going to bombardment rather than regular attacks was to reduce the lethality of aircraft vs ground units. Air units can and do still kill ground units on occasion, but its no longer the wholesale slaughter like in WaW. Aircraft are much better off being used to support ground troops where the suppression they inflict can really turn the tide in a battle.

And yes, I believe you can still draw out enemy air unit via a small ground attack, but that is harder in practice than in theory. It subjects all of your air units to ground fire from the defending units whereas simply executing airfield or infrastructure strikes bypass non-Flak/non-Fighter anti-air fire.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is an 'auto-hit' chance of 5% for all attacks. Basically this adds an amount equal to the target unit's EVxDur to the result of the attack. For standard combat, this is a guaranteed damage and even for bombardment combat (like airstrikes and AA fire), it can often prove fatal. So subjecting all of your aircraft to extra AA fire can be costly. Even without the auto-hit, relative small dice attacks can still cause massive suppression if your EV roll is low (ie, a '1'). So I'd be careful about trying to draw enemy air out in that fashion if the enemy has a lot of units with decent GA stats present.

Overall, I think you'll find that AWD is a far tighter game than WaW. Many of the loopholes and exploits have been closed off and the combat results make a lot more sense now!

I think I know what this is. Use your mouse wheel to scroll up and see if the list shows up.

I noticed if I have a turn where, say as Germany, a looong list of things need repair and I would scroll down to see
them all. I guess I exit the screen at the bottom of the list. Then on the Japanese turn If I go to the repair screen
it is blank because it's still at the bottom (or so it thinks) so I have to scroll up.

Hope that made sense.
