Modifying BioEd's code (assuming we find someone who can) opens a major can of worms that would require extensive testing - another long delay.

Do you have the sourcecode from Yves? Are you in contact with Jean Luc from SZO, who is also working on an editor project?

Technically, you are WAY over my head on how the Bio-ed works and interfaces with TAOW. [&:] BUT if it works, let the naysayers gripe. An ugly fix that works is better than no fix. [:D] Besides, anyone willing to get into scenario design should expect to have to get a little dirt on his hands. [:'(] Keep up the good work.

Great work so far! Thanks.

One other thing you could try is to click the "export" button. When (if?) its dialog comes up, check the "Database" box and save. See if the .xml file is created. If it's small enough (doubtful), you might even attach it here so we could examine it.

You might also try the COW.REG change above, to see if the TOAW III graphics directory can be successfully pointed to, instead of needing to copy it to the ACOW path.

If you change the cow.reg path to the Toaw3 folder the COW.exe (no matter in which folder it is) will use the graphics of toaw3 and run normally. Tried this by my own. But what has this to do with BioEd? - BioEd states "Opart3.exe size doesn't match any known ACOW.exe" when you try to open the opart3.exe, no matter what registry path is set.

(theoretically one can have a cheap ACOW with the .exe from BioEd, a proper registry path and the nocd patch...)

I was wondering as well what all this testing was doing. I mean, you still do need the hacked exe as BioEd won't open Opart3 so what does it matter in the long run. Seems the code will still need to be modified and the exe still hacked to get things running for III. I will continue to jump through these hoops however and provide results in HOPE that it's actually doing some good.

I don't think I'm permitted to answer, just yet.

But if we could just get you to test the .xml export as I requested above. [;)]

An elegant fix may have to wait. If we get something that works we can use it as a stopgap measure. Modifying BioEd's code (assuming we find someone who can) opens a major can of worms that would require extensive testing - another long delay.

Naturally getting the thing to just work is a big jump, and most people will welcome it. But I have no difficulty picturing the usual nay-sayers jumping in to explain how they were "cheated" by Matrix.

As to the source code, all we have to do is change one or two (registry?) paths, which will presumably be in there in plain text. Presumably it would be perfectly possible to make the thing look for the TOAW III registry keys.

Of course this still leaves us using cracked COW .exes to produce modified data in the first place. But that's less hassle than adding registry keys and copying large directories.

We probably ought to keep this on the development board.

Great. This means one does not need to do more than the registry change. The copy of the graphics directory is unnecessary.

Yes, we have the code. Ralph tried modifying it, but had no luck. Jean Luc seems to have stalled out.

Why do you think that you need a hacked EXE?

I know a lot of people (me, for instance) that would never use a hacked EXE because of viruses.

I'm thinking the BioEd author used a hacked EXE because he needed a source file for the equipment database but didn't want to violate the TOAW copyright.....so he fixed the TOAW he was using so that it wouldn't "play" but still had the equipment database in it.

I'm thinking that in this instance BioEd only "reads" the hacked EXE for the equipment information and that even if it did have a virus in it the virus wouldn't be activated unless and until the hacked EXE is executed as if it was a program someone tried to run. You can still scan it for virii if you desire.....scanning it for a virus won't hurt anything.

Jean Luc has run into time problems, he said he had to delay work on it due to RL issues.

It does play. In fact this is the only way to get any use out of the .exe in COW.

Anyway, this isn't hacked by some l33t d00d. It's hacked by someone I've known (albeit not very well) for five or six years.
