Minor weirdness and wishes (combined post)

Post by Nigel Strange »

First of all: I'm very impressed with the improvements. The graphics are awe inspiring, the cockpit art is excellent, and the framerate is still fine. Well done.

There are a few things I noticed with Gathering Storm that seem like bugs, though none of them are showstoppers.

1. Carrier landings are too difficult. You cannot land if you coast in (this is already discussed in another thread, but I wanted to list it here).
2. The shift+f2 is a nice feature, but you can't escape from it until some time runs out. I'd like to watch the ship zoom past, but then I want to be able to switch back to cockpit mode.
3. Would it be possible to make the virtual cockpit the default view? The cockpit art is cool.
4. Speaking of cockpit art: the colors on the reflections do not match the console buttons on some craft.
5. The mouse y axis seems stuck in reverse mode. I would like to use mouse-look within the cockpit, but it looks in the opposite direction of what I want. I have tried using the reverse axis setting, but it either doesn't "stick" ingame or else it doesn't work at all. Maybe it only works for steering the craft. I wouldn't know because I use a joystick.

Wish list:

1. cockpits for all ships (or at least, all fighters)
2. More flares. 10 flares is ok if you only expect 10 missiles to be aimed at you. I've never flown a mission like that, though.
3. Repairability. If your ship gets damaged, it would be cool to either call a tow ship to drag you back to the carrier, or to be able to fix your ship somehow (maybe a repair bot or an engineering panel with some wire-strippers or something). Heck, if you could jump out in a suit and weld your ship back together, it would be awesome, but nobody has done that before. Otherwise, you just drift in space without hope of rescue.
Nothing ventured, nothing lost.

You shoudl have the ability to call some kind of aupport craft which can repair and refuel your ship. Of course only if you are close enough to a carrier.

Are you saying that there is a support ship and I should be able to figure out how to use it or that there ought to be some kind of support ship?

When I radio command, they give me the option to request backup. I haven't seen a request for a SNRV.

On another thread someone had made some small modifications to the game to give the ships some minor repair capability. Sounds better than drifting out in space for eternity.

There is no repair capability in the stock fighters. Nor is there a recovery vehicle that will come and get you. If it happens to be you that is drifting off into space, end the mission. You'll still get a score.

Milo's explanation, as I recall it, for why there were no support ships for refueling fighters was that the fusion reactors aboard fighters needed to be shut down and cooled off to refuel, which is part of the reason that fighters are unusable for 20+ minutes after they dock.

It would be nice to be able to call in a tow ship for those obnoxious times your drive or thrusters get knocked out.
