Looking for Good Graphics Software

Post by GaryChildress »

I'm finally breaking down and purchasing a graphics editor program to do game graphics modding with. MS Paint just isn't cutting it anymore. However, I'm not very familiar with graphics software. Can anyone recommend the best program for working with just about any image format, shrinking and converting to bitmap BMP images? Also, are there any free downloads out there that are capable of all the above?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, GIMP.... that's a huge program with a steep learning curve. Definitely the most complete free graphic program, and on par with Photoshop, but good luck familiarizing yourself with that breast...

What about Corel Draw? Looking at it on the web it looks like it might be good for drawing my own graphics and it looks like it can edit photos as well.

Seriously, though, the GIMP is actually worth the effort. I use it, and am quite pleased...

Coreldraw is good as a drawing package, i.e. for creating new stuff, such as drawing shapes and colouring them in kind of thing but Corel Photopaint, the part of the Corel package used to modify other image files like bmp and jpg is a bit of a nightmare to get to grips with. I have found Gimp, which is free, is much much better than Corel Photopaint. But gimp isn't very good as a drawing package just as an image file editor

I've been using a few programs.  Paint.net and Photoplus 6 were both free from the net.  I've not tried GIMP yet.

GIMP is nice and it is completely free. It is not harder to learn than Photoshop and there is also a mod that makes it work/look like Photoshop (if you already know PS).
