Theme of our next game

Hussar Games "For Liberty!" is a turn based game of the American Revolution and the Rakoczi Independence War. Command the armies of the newly born United States of America against Britain or the ill-equipped Hungarian rebels against mighty Austria. 1848 is a turn base game on the Hungarian rebellion against Austria in 1848-49.

Theme of our next game

Post by HussarGames »

What should it be?

Some comments

Frederick the Great
+ game engine well suited
- lesser known wars

Rome vs. Carthage (Punic Wars)
+ well known conflict
- needs major overhaul of the engine

Hungary vs. Turkey (15-16th century)
+ we might do this for the Hungarian market anyway
- not very well known, although the Battle of Mohacs is famous

American Civil War
+ a popular conflict
- many games coming out soon

Napoleonic period
+ a popular conflict
- many games out and more coming

We want to hear your thoughts.

I voted for Frederick the Great but I would buy any of them.
I bought For Liberty from Battlefront and am looking forward to this update.  Although I am an American, I have really only played the Hungary scenarios.

I voted for a nappy game, something between EiA and Black powder's game. Something CoG should have been. HISTORIC but still flexible.

Or maybe a Heart of Iron meets War in the pacific in a wego system daily / weekly turns (I'd like to design and build proper japanese light cruisers (like the USN Brooklyn classs) or some more of the Shokakus, still dont get why the IJN has not built more of it). So a GREAT grand strategy game in WWII would be fun [;)].

Please subtract 1 from the Civil war category and add it to the Punic Wars option.  I totally read that poll too fast.

Well, idea behind Frederick the Great and Punic Wars (Cannae? :) is great but I voted Napoleon conflict. And that with major overhaul of the engine. Hungary vs. Turkey is also interesting.

What is main advantage of your games is your UI but you need to work on it a little bit more, just make it simple as possible! Look at Crown of Glory, interesting idea but made with one of worst UI world have ever seen!

Why Napoleonic? Well, I wouldn't indulge just American taste and make ACW game. Doing Napoleon game you can count on good sales in Europe and USA as well etc... No problem if many games are coming on Napoleon because if you do it rirght it will do fine.

Free advice: find somewhere a copy of KOEI Napoleon game. It was made for PC, Amiga and SNES. It's great Napoleon game and very simple but engaging. What is brilliantly done and not like Crown of Glory is recruiting in cities for instance and you actually felt beating of Empire under you :)
EDIT: and tactical battles where done great in that game. Just copy that and you have your game :)
best games are the ones that are very easy to get into but hard to master. Heroes of Might and Magic is perfect example.

Your beta tester on 1848 hahaha :)

Napoleonic for me.

There already is a series focusing on the battles of Frederick the Great (Horse and Musket, now published by Matrix), there are at least two games coming out in the near future involving the American Civil War, Rome v. Carthage sounds interesting but not at the strategic scale of "For Liberty", and Hungary vs Turkey is a conflict I'm utterly unfamiliar with.

Nappy is what I'd like to see.

I voted for Rome Vs. Carthage.  But if that would require a major overhaul maybe that's something for further down the line (after a game or two that would be easier to adapt the engine for).

My second choice would be 'Frederick the Great'.  Although the engine would be perfect for Napoleonic and ACW, I think the glut on the market is just too great.

But the real people to ask are the advisors from Matrix proper who would have the data on how much games in particular eras sell.  It may be that just because there seems to be a glut in a certain time period, games set in that era still sell better than their counter-parts from other eras.  In other words, the glut might actually work for you.  Not being an expert I don't really know.  But something to consider - that notoriety versus competition factor.

The question then becomes how to distinguish yourself from those other offerings.  For instance the Birth of America guys are going the ACW route, and though I know from playing experience the unique dimension your engine brings, especially in the richness of tactical combat, would it look to the unintiated to be covering the same ground?

Still love the idea of you having a poll for this!!!

Shows once again that you value customer feedback.

Keep up the great work!!!

Oops- I didn't mean BoA.  That really wouldn't be direct competition anyway, the engines are different enough.  I was thinking of Matrix releasing 'Forge of Freedom' (the CoG engine set in the ACW) at around the same time as a new For Liberty! engine ACW game, which might 'appear' like over-kill.  I say 'appear' because it wouldn't be overkill to me personally and I would strongly consider buying both, but again to an outside, uniformed eye, it might appear too similar.

I voted Rome vs Carthage, however Napoleonic and Civil War are good too. But the real treat would be WWI [&o]

Heres a suggestion that's not on the list: ENGLISH CIVIL WAR.  As far as I'm aware this exicting period has not been reproduced in any PC wargame.  It was a close run thing and a major historical event.  I belive this period would make a brillant wargame on both strategic and tactical levels.

Or the American War of Independence...are there enough battles there to be computerised?

I voted  Hungary vs. Turkey, because i am hungarian and it interrested me! :) I think it would be another good choose the Punic wars (Rome vs. Carthage) or Frederick the Great, because there are many games about the others (Napoelon, American Civil War).
