Problem loading in-progress scenario

Post by azraelck »

I've been working on a small scenario, mostly designed to piss people off. Unfortunately, when I go to load it, it locks up just as I get to the page where the scenario is located at. I have to ctrl-alt-del and shut down SPWaW.

The scenario is around #365; but I cannot access it now due to the lock up problem. It also means I can't access a couple other scenarios I've had on the back burner for a while. Since I don't want to delete any existing scenarios, it also means I can't try to design any more until I figure it out. It's a small map; with not even 1500 points between both sides (and part of that is part of the objectives, not actually a fighting force). It only happened after I went to the game editor to alter some of the units for the scenario's purposes; though I don't think that should have caused it, as I can't even load it now.

This is a similar problem like I've had with a few attempts at a long campaign; and has been happening between two computers, and from 8.2 to 8.43 to Enhanced. So it doesn't seem to be version or computer dependant. The long campaign tends to be certain time periods, like early war ('39) Soviets. While late war Germans ('44) have the same problems. I can fight up to that point if I wish, but I cannot start a new campaign at that point.

Does anyone else have a problem like that? And is there a solution? I don't have room for a second PC just for this game. And it probably wouldn't do any good if this has been a recurring problem.

It's a corrupted .dat file; I have had this happen when I've made some 'mistake' using Fred's editor. The game crashes when it accesses that particular file; the only solution is to delete it. I am in the habit now of making back-up copies of any scenario/map file that I am going to edit outside the 'normal' game editor, just in case I do something wrong.
