Remove Speed Cap?

Post by Nigel Strange »

I know almost nothing about modding, but I thought: if there was a variable or something in the game that represented each ship's max speed or something, it would be possible to remove the speed cap. I think it would be cool to be able to accelerate to whatever speed you can attain given the acceleration rate your ship has.

Also, I don't see what the advantage is to nuclear reactors on the small ships, since the fuel consumption seems to be about the same as it would be for rocket fuel, and the performance seems lower (i.e. unless you're using the augmenter, you get almost no discernable thrust). It makes space-refuelling impossible, among other things.
Nothing ventured, nothing lost.

Speed in starshatter is handled primarily by a variable called "vlimit," it represents the exhaust velocity of your ship's engines, after which your ship will start to acellerate slower. This is generally in line with relativistic physics becuase it gets increasingly harder to reach higher speeds as you get faster.
Theoretically you could just up the vlimit a few 0s, good luck slowing down/stopping though. Also, you'd need to be able to alter existing def files, which, I'm pretty sure require's the source code, and the ability to replace existing ships in the game, I'm not sure weather or not that's possible. Hopefully we can get the final word from someone else.

So where's the obligatory game video with topgun music?
