Air supply transport in to enemy base?

Post by Accipiter »

Since I just recently discovered that supply no longer freely moves where I need them to move, I still need a way of moving in supply for offensive operations in China. In my current campaign (RHSEOS), I have several divisions (an an Army HQ) at Puching ready to take the base. Unfortunately, supply levels are very low from the trip to Puching and even though I have direct access with bases with high supply (such as Shanghai), none flows to my troops. My 2 eng rgt have been as 0 supply for 2 turns now...not a great thing.

Is it possible to supply my troops directly with air transports or is supplying this way not possible? I tried it a turn ago and didn't notice any difference.

Any help with how to improve supply to inland base for offensive operations?

I was corrected on this issue in that supply is suppose to flow to units.  I have a good amount of supply in all the bases surrounding Puching and control the roads leading to Puching, but I still have minimal or no supply movement to my assaulting units as noted by zero supply for my engineers even if just sitting around.

I have used air transport into enemy base hexes with success for supply purposes. It is slow process but seems to work. Had same problem as you and then assigned transports and supply began to creep upwards.

It does work .. sort of .. just dont expect to get much and with large formations even 100+ dakotas makes little differance. Throw in good old chang-Kai-check.. that will cause aupply to be drawn here pretty quick
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Beware when ememy has CAP over their base where you are going to do those air drops. Fighters kill transports quite easily. It's only shown in brief text when air transport sequence is going, so can easily go unnoticed.

I have observed that supply will only flow from a base if it has 2x supplies (which is fairly hard to get in China).

Air supply in China is not the way to go. Multi-division stacks require too much supply.

Much simpler is to just dump off a large chunk of supply into your ports and supply will flow from there to your units. Once you have excess supply at several Chinese bases your Japanese units will have no problems.

If you have insufficient supply in China, then moving it about by air is not likely to help much. Just take some of the supply sitting about in Japan and move it to China. If you have no supply sitting about in Japan then you have bigger problems.

On a similar note in regards to supply flow, in Japan I have 25k supply in Tokyo and 42k in Osaka, but one base away from Tokyo is Gumma which only has 1500 supply. At least in RHSEOS, Gumma is a major a/c production center and without supply, I'm not having any luck in getting my factories to repair.

Unfortunately for Gumma, it's not a port city and has a low supply requirement level. Is the only way to get supply to flow in to Gumma involve air transport (which I don't think will ever get the supply level over 10000), moving in all available unit in Japan to Gumma to require requirement levels, or waiting for Tokyo/Osaka to have double the supply needed and hope that some of the supply flows to Gumma. I've even moved HQ units to Gumma and still have minimal supply there.

Move the HI Command HQ there, that should do it. Of course if the Home Islands are starved for supply (as they often are in the case of EARLY IJ FACTORY OVER-EXPANSION, ahem) it isn't going to matter what you do. If bases don't have plenty of supply for themselves, they are not going to cut any loose to send to Gumma or anyplace else.

Have you tried a bombardment? Performing a bombadment is supposed to draw supplies to the units if I remember right.

Having experimented with this in China as IJ, I'm sceptical. I was reading in some old thread over the weekend that (according to Frag or Mogami IIRC) supply movement on land does not occur the same way each turn, that some turns there is movement over long distances, some turns over medium distances, and some turns over short distances. I suspect it is the short distance moves that pushes supply to your front-line LCUs. But if you had been waiting some days for supply to arrive in a particular stack in order to make an attack, and became impatient and decided to bombard, and then supply showed up the next turn, it might seem as if the bombardment had caused it....

You're refering to the thread I mentioned here, right?

Have you found other comments? I'm curious because this might become important for Woos' utility, and the rail clusters it needs.

That must be the one. Reading it again, it sounds like I still don't have it right myself. But there is something strange going on with supply movement. I recently had to delay an assault for more than a week, waiting for supplies to arrive at LCUs in the red. They finally did show up for no particular reason that I could see. I had not delivered supplies to the mainland, the nearest base was itself in the red both before and after the LCU resupply; I could not determine where the supplies had come from, unless it was from a very well-stocked major port that was 6 rail, one road, and two trail hexes distant.[&:] But the question remains: if that was where the supplies came from, why did it take so long? What caused the supplies to come from there, and why on that day? Did the presence of a half-dozen nearer bases from which that stack could not pull supply have an affect on the duration of this delay? Lots of questions about this.
