OT: FLYBOY's and the stuff I learned from it

Post by wild_Willie2 »

Hi there
I just watched flyboys and these are the things I learned from it..

* You always let a green squadron take of with 12 planes at the same time, leaving only 4 feet seperation.
* Bullets bounce of wooden wingspars and machineguns.
* Bullets bounce of virtually EVERYTHING on a wooden plane, leaving nice sparks while doing so.
* A love stoiry is mandatory in EVERY warflick [8|][8|]
* German bombers comming back from a bombing raid STILL carry all their bombs.
* You fly your squadron through heavy flak with virtually NO plane seperation.
* ENEMY Machinegun bullets leave NICE black "swirlies" when they are fired.
* There was no such thing as a small rear view mirrow on WO1 planes (to check your six)
* German pilots had a front windscreen considerably SMALLER than their height (it would have had ZERO effect).
* Allies pilots had nice small HAMMERS with them on their planes in order to "bang" the machinegun once they jammed.
* Once you gun is jammed, you NO longer pay attention to the enemy you are persuing, you just start HAMMERING on your machinegun, ignoring everything else.
* You treat combat psychosis with a slap on the face and some brandy.
* You take a civillian up in your 2 seat trainer without repeating "NEVER EVER TOUCH THE CONTROLLS" multiple times.
* Machinegun bullets fire from the rear at the exact location of the pilot seat DO NOT kill or even hurt an allied pilot. (These guy's must have at least an inch of armour plating at the rear of their seat.) (Germans however, DO NOT have these armoured seats [;)][;)][;)])
* You can land your plane in "NO MANS LAND" and run across it under heavy fire, to get your fellow pilot buddy out of an downed plane.
* Once arriving there, you can chop off your buddy's (trapped) arm with a SINGLE strike from an entrenchment tool.
* Shooting down a big, slow, HYDROGEN filled zeppelin is though.
* Zeppelins move AS FAST as biplanes.
* German fighters could ESCORT a zeppelin al the way to paris.
* You can paint a logo on your plane and fly a mission 2 minutes after the paintjob is finished.
* WHO needs radar, every bomber raid is intercepted by either good or bad guys,
* After landing from a long combat mission, you can just hop back into your plane immediatly and go for another round without refeuling and reloading.
* You can pull your plane into a loop de loop from level flight.

Thats all.
I sure learned A LOT from this movie [:D][:D][:D][:D]

You can treat many things that way only you substitute beer, tequila, rum or whatever is on hand depending on the occasion. [:'(]

This is actually somewhat accurate. A stiff drink and a smack to "snap you out of it" wasn't at all an uncommon "cure" for "shell shock" in WW I. The rest sounds like typical Hollywood "head up it's butt" nonsense..., moron's never met a "special effect" they didn't overuse to the point of stupidity, and historical accuracy will always get short shrift compared to "keeping all the action in the shot".

Neither was electric shock therapy to the genitals ( this is true ). It doesn't mean that its inclusion in a movie was a result of thorough research. I'd say they just threw enough sh1t at the script that some of it smelt the same as the sh1t from the trenches by pure happenstance.7

I certainly won't argue with you on that score. I'm firmly of the opinion that when Hollywood does get something right it's probably by accident.

I haven't seen Flyboys, and probably won't now, but I still maintain the WORST war movie in recent years was Windtalkers.[8|]

Agreed ! The first thing I look for in a war movie is how the grenade explosion is done.....if there is a farking hugh fireball then the moive is an immediate write orf.

lol. My favorite was the huge coastal defense guns deployed on a ridge and used as direct-fire weapons, not to mention how they gathered around a campfire after a hard-day's fight, and discovered that Indians were people too. Also particularly irksome were the Vietnamese-like villages on SAIPAN where the villagers milled about acting like American troops were no big deal.
Cue the nice soon-to-die American soldier handing out chocolate to the sweet village kids....[8|]

Nope. Pearl Harbor was a cinematic masterpiece comparatively.

Still, I can't imagine how tough the Pacific campaign would have been for Japan if they had failed in destroying the Perry class FFGs anchored in Pearl Harbor. [:o]

Wait, Im stupid. I forgot Japan had Nuke Carriers already back then [:D]

* Allies pilots had nice small HAMMERS with them on their planes in order to "bang" the machinegun once they jammed.

Haven't seen the movie, but I can comment on a few points. Yes, some allied pilots carried hammers to unjam their guns, specifically the Lewis gun, a drum fed machine gun mounted on the upper wing of some earlier British fighters.
* Shooting down a big, slow, HYDROGEN filled zeppelin is though.

Yup, quite difficult. Until the advent of incendiary ammunition, mid-war. Prior to that there are a number of accounts of Allied pilots emptying entire drum/belts at close range into Zeppelins with no effect. It was so ineffectual the Allies tried rockets and bombs and grappling hooks. No lie. Hydrogen by itself is not flammable, only hydrogen mixed with air. And it still needs an ignition source when so mixed.

The first pilot to down a Zeppelin over England received the VC for his feat (that's how remarkable it was considered) - Leefe Robinson, IIRC - a prototype for every dashing Errol Flynn/David Niven WWI fighter pilot of 'tween-war movies.
* Zeppelins move AS FAST as biplanes.

Not as fast, but almost as fast. 50 mph at the start of the war, 60 mph shortly thereafter and 70-80 mph by 1917. It was climb that the Zepp's excelled at - they could outclimb most fighters at mid to high altitudes for most of the war. It was their standard evasive tactic upon spotting an approaching fighter.

For more info see Douglas Robinson's "Zeppelins in Combat"

Are you saying that there is no huge fireball from hand grenade in RealLife (tm)? [X(] [8D]

I liked Flyboys, but I admit I was watching it for enjoyment and not historical accuracy.  I did see a post awhile back when the trailer came out that gave historical examples of almost everything in the movie.

I did the same Kid. They did do a good job with the planes themselves.

Really, if you can set aside historical acurracy, I think you would enjoy the movie. It made me locate my copy of Richthofen's War. Now if I can only find someone to play against.[:)]
