Feb 4th and 5th Dutch Harbor invaded.

Post by stldiver »

Taking the quick way with just the combat report, as I am very busy with work. He invaded Dutch Harbor with the 3rd segment of 7th Division.

Nemo, with my style of defense this game I have set up second line defense and abandoned or left the front line. Patrick early on sent unprotected forces and my CV's caught them. He is in the military and preforms excellant operations. He recon's heavily before then when he hits, he hits very hard. If I had adopted an upfront defence my troops would have been crushed, since I have pulled back, they are in stronger forts and better prepared. On the other hand his losses in ships is minor, mainly PG, PC AP, AK, only 1CL and 1DD, about 4SS. Thus he is fully capable of crushing me if I show in force where he is. My fleets are dancing just out of his reach, looking for an opening.

Jutland13 is my other opponent as japanese and you know his aggression, he taught me that a backup line is better then a front line, I lost 8BB's and 2CV's to him holding an early front line. Doesn't mean another game I won't change my tactics, but even you could not score a lot of ship kills early on me with my current defense, though losses would be heavier as my style is more like Jutlands. In other words Patrick has achieved very good advances, except in China without any significant loss to himself, and he could push into overdrive whenever he wants, and thats what I am waiting for, as it exposes ships, while at the moment he is heavily covered.

To sum up, he is conserving his forces for when I commit, and I am waiting for an unexposed opening to commit. Thus we dance.

Interesting... So you are both still manoeuvring looking for openings... I had wondered if that was the case. In that case how would you feel about showing him the sort of fore that he could crush with a moderate committment ( it is key to make sure he doesn't bring all of KB and the battleline as you want him to commit a force you can actually destroy), wait for him to commit and then concentrate forces which have been lying in wait in the second line and in neighbouring theatres in order to achieve a many vs few concentration?

Well, that's that settled then.

Feb 7th thru 8th, New Calendonia, New Hebrides and Canton invaded

Post by stldiver »

Thanks for the advice Nemo, but that is what I have been doing and this is an open forum which Patrick posts. He also knows I am biding my time looking for an opening.

Well he finally is pushing again. New Hebrides Islands fall. Patrick invades Koumac with one unit in New Caledonia to test the defense or make the next troops not have to be disrupted. I have no forces at the northern section, so he will take that. He knew that from a DD bombardment raid two days ago, same with New Hebrides.

He also invaded Canton with a token unit from the 16th division, it ran into a portion of the 40th Division and died in two days, only about 240 men made it ashore, I am sure he was just testing the defences.

He begins bombing Pago and Suva with Betty's.

In the North Pacific at Dutch Harbor Patrick brings in a large CL,DD,PG group to destroy two AK's that I had unloading.
In Chengting, he pulled in 3 bde and 3 div, probaby left the surrounding bases empty. We will see if he can push me out, as that base produces HI and resources and as long as I sit there, no production.

Well he's starting to hit my defenses, The next month will not be like the last.

Feb 9th and 10th 1942 Noumea Under Siege

Post by stldiver »

Hmmm what to say,

In North the Japanese are now landing the remaining elements of the 7th division at Dutch Harbor they are currently facing 1 1/3 RCT units, his CV's have slinked back into the area just 60 miles NW with his CL group covering. I had a PG try to push these forces out, but obviously they were not up to the task [:'(] ( I forgot to change the orders)

In the Central Pacific a BB group bombards Canton, with another group NW probably CV cover, Pago is hit again and it looks like transports will land tommorrow.

In the South Pacific, BB's bombard Noumea and due to only troops being in the south he claims 2/3 of the Island, things don't look good there. Guess Patrick is tired of waiting.

In the SRA not much to report, seems he bombs thru the air but is busy elsewhere.

In Malaya 7 units now 60 miles S of Akyab, they should be marching in soon, a Brigade marched out of malaya and Japanese troops are holding the surrounding bases, just wanted to recon.

In India everyone is on a holiday, Buddha is proud.

Here are some of the reports.

Feb 11th and 14th 1942 Java Invaded, Pago Invaded, CD fire away

Post by stldiver »

Well the Japanese have been very busy the last 4 days. not only have the bombarded Soerabaja and receive a proper CD fire salute, but they invaded Malang on the other side.

In the Central Pacific they invade Pago and take heavy CD fire, but there ground forces definatly will overwhelm my defense,
Patrick surface fleet also catches 7 ak's and AP at Suva, not chance of survival there.

In the North Pacific I think he has an equal match and that decision will not be decided for weeks to come as my ground forces are equal match to his. He controls the seas but my land airforce has yet to enter play

In China he makes inroads at Ichang but it will be costly.
Here are some details.

RE: Feb 11th and 14th 1942 Java Invaded, Pago Invaded, CD fire away

Post by stldiver »

Well Pago has fallen, he unloaded more of the 16th division, I probably should have defended this sooner. A single Regiment could have held. My other opponent also grabbed Pago and Suva, so I figured why defend Pago unless I can do it well. Alas he brought a division.

3 CV's move south of Canton and hit AK's unloading supplies and bringing in supplies, only 2 damaged on the second day, but tommorrow could be different.

In the North Pacific his CV's have moved out of the area, but he still has ship superiority, I will post maps of this area and South Pacific.

In China Ichang is deliberate attacked twice with his 28 units, he takes heavy losses but reduce forts down to 1. I will try to withdraw tommorrow as it serves no purpose to defend against that large hord in level one forts. He pushes the single division NE of Changsa back to Changsa, but I move in 4 divisions to stop him there. I will post a map of this area and burma.

In SRA he takes Malang, with 2 BDE, I withdrew the only defender at Malang back to Soerbaja.

China Burma Map Feb 17th

Post by stldiver »

The situation is untenable in Ichang, but the base is pretty worthless in my opinion.
Just move 5 divisions NE of changsa, to stop his new advance.
I also pulled out of Chengting, he moved heavy units in and I didn't want to get trapped outside of Yenen.

The Aluetians Feb 17th

Post by stldiver »

His CV's have moved out west, but CL force and AK's still control Dutch Harbor, its a stalemate, but B-17's start to fly from Anchorage.
Land Based air should push him out.

US CV's strike terror at Dutch Harbor

Post by stldiver »

Feb 17th, 18th and 19th saw very little of any action. The 20th brought all 4 US CV's into action at Dutch Harbor.
Patrick had been leaving his surface units there after his 3 CV's had pulled back so I raced at high speed all 4 CV's from different areas (they are tired). On the 19th I saw the CL's and DD withdraw but then during the night move on 20th, BB Kirishama and company show up, I was hoping they would stay, they did not. My CV's launched an AM and PM strike sinking 3 AP's, 1 AK, 4 MSW (I know they come back but thats 12 so far this war). There are 3 more AP's heavily damaged and one on fire.

The US CV's will try to catch the BB Kirishima, the next two days will be interesting, it is not known where the Jap CV's are I assume a couple days away, but 4 of mine on 3 of his would be acceptable to me.

Noumea falls, only token resisitance. He lands at thurseday Island and Keopang.

Here are the results.

CV continue with pummeling transports at Adak

Post by stldiver »

The surface fleets were no where to be seen but at Adak we hit more Ak's and some TK's [:)] with fuel.
I moved the CV's within 180 miles of Adak, still concerned with his carriers, at the end of the second day I have noticed planes at Adak so I will hit the airfield, it is currently level one but no telling when it changes.

All else in the pacific is quiet. In SRA the usual bombings. Here is some reports and a map.

Adak airfield and tankers hit, Nandi is invaded

Post by stldiver »

Well my CV's hit the remaining tankers and the airfield, Patrick lost over 54 planes, close to 40 on the ground.
The biggest news was he hit Fiji, first a bombardement with BB's then he invaded with the 2nd division, vetrans of Port Morseby.
I have fiji well defended this one will be a battle like up north.
In CHina he finally captured Ichang, I pulled all troops out except 3 division which were slow on the retreat. Probably hugging loved ones goodbye.

Here are some of the results

RE: Adak airfield and tankers hit, Nandi is invaded

Post by Zemke »

Well all I can say is "can you say over reach", because that is where I am at. Port Author has turned into everything I feared it would, the 7th Division is stuck, I have lost more transport shipping and Tankers in the last two or three turns that I have most of the game , (or in tankers 3 sunk). I have also lost more planes in the last turn in one turn sense PH. The 7th is cut off and all my fleets have run for home, calling for big brother to come help! We landed on Fiji and for once my recon failed to pick up an entire American Division there. This is not looking good either, and will force me to do things I did not want to do. Java Operation is continuing with the Main Effort landing now. Upon the conclusion of the Java Operations I will consider Phase II finished. Let’s hope I can keep Fiji from becoming another Port Author. The Commander of the Port Author Operation has been relieved of Command and sent back to Japan. As CIC it looks like I will have to take personal charge of this to sort it out.
As far as the IJ fleet is concerned, it is in pretty good shape, although both the Fleet and Army could use some time to rest and refit. I have been sending ships in for refit as needed, so Operations have not been so pressing as to stop that. Pilot losses have stablized, mostly due to the lack of any real fighter activity, my pool is even increasing. His Bombardment of A, near PA, distroyed lots of planes, but the pilots seem in good shape. All pilots have been sent to the rifle range to qualify with their individual weapons and learn how to use a varity of Infantry weapons, although I don't think it will come to that. He has launched a few large B-17 raids on troops in Burma, but nothing to write home about. Next phase will mostly be consolidation and refitting, resting the force, and getting set for the great defensive battles to come, that is as soon as I take care of a few "lose ends".
I think he has massed most of the American Fleet in his efforts to support Port Author.

RE: Adak airfield and tankers hit, Nandi is invaded

Post by stldiver »

Well to Patrick Port Athor is Dutch Harbor to me, but yes I have unloaded a division there that was scheduled for Pago, He continues to land at Nandi with the 2nd division and just landed at Suva with the South Seas Detachment. What he says when he missed a division is probably the fact that not only are the New Zealand brigade that begins there defending, but I also have the 27th division and 2 USMC, both of these are at Suva and will pound the South Seas Detachment then take care of the 2nd. It should be a long haul battle.

In the North my CV's have pulled back to rearm, one was down to 10% missions and the others around 30 to 40% flights available. My BB's hit Adak and the battle results don't tell the true story with over 40 planes blown on the ground.

Patrick continues landing on the backside of Java at Tjilitjap, He has not advanced on Batavia or Sorabaja, he has 2 mixed Bde at each landing on the backside of Java. Don't believe the imperialist lies that after Java and cleaning up they will stop. Earlier he mentioned going all the way to San Francisco, We are prepared [:)]

Although I must say from my scouts, he is building up just taken bases very quickly. He seems a master at logistics.

Fiji is the focus now

Post by stldiver »

Well the war turns to Ground warfare.
In the North Pacific My troops begin to pound the 7th division, this one will take a while.
In Fiji he switches the rest of the south seas detachment to land at Nandi, In about 6 days, Suva should be cleared at this rate.
In Nandi he has the advantage.

Tilijatp sp? has fallen but just the CD gun was there. He knows my main forces are at Soerabaja and Batavia, where else.

Here are the reports, and I will follow with the score a map of his expansion, then I will post the end of the month results.

Well Feb. 1942 has come to an end and it can be pretty much considered a quiet month also. The action for me did not heat up till the end and Patrick finally began invading bases I felt I could hold. I let Noumea and Pago go with little resistance because my first choice of defense was Fiji, after that I would expand out. I moved 2 divisions there. Pago was to be defended with an RCT (it was only 4 days away when he landed) and a division (which has moved to Dutch harbor to defend against the imperialist aggressors). I probably should have defended PM to slow these other assaults and my defense would have been lock tight.

In SRA he has moved slowly on Java and the units there have been pounded by air daily as they wait for the end. The landing began towards the end of feb.

In Burma 8 units sit next to Akyab but have not moved in yet, I expect them any day. He has moved one division and another unit next to Mandalay so the battle will begin there soon.

In China he took Ichang but the front is stable otherwise. Here is the score.

March 1st thru 4th and you could hear crickets

Post by stldiver »

Not much has gone on these days, he pulled the portion left of the south seas detachment from Suva, it must be nice to control the seaways. Other then that a few assorted airbattles and some land actions but nothing to write in the newspapers. Time is on my side not his, so I take this as a good thing.

The days of easy pickings are over. Fiji may have two plus Divisions, but they still need to eat. We will see if I can maintain a blockage to slowly let they die on the vine so to speak. He will need those Divisions for any counter-attack later. Nothing significant to report.

On another note, in this Mod each side started with a lot more political points than in either the stock or Nik Mod game. I gave the Allies Pt's to start and Japan 3000. That is the reason the 7th Division (of Port Author fame) was able to be transfered to the Northern Army HQ, which in my opinion should start that way. Also I did not like the idea that either side would start with little or no political points at the start.

So far Japan is still clearly in charge of the air anywhere I have fighters that can fly. All though it is hard to fly fighters when a large fleet of Battleships pulls up next to your airfield and blows it to bits!

Last I am working on a Mod of sort of a what if........What if Japan's Big Battleship faction had been over ruled by the Emperor in favor of Yamamoto's idea that the money being spent on the Battleships Yamato and Musuhie or whatever its called) were spent on carriers. So I made the Yamato and M into carriers and they arrive at the same time as the regular BB's would have. Of course this action in 1937 would have caused a reaction from the Americans, so they start with one extra Carrier and have an extra one the way in March. I am also tinkering with the idea that if Japan had acted on German fighter plans for the Me-109, they could have had a copy ready by Dec 1941, albeit in small numbers. Another thing is what if Japan had seen the success of the German Blitzkrieg into Poland, France and Russia and decided to create a more modern army based on firepower and maneuver instead of turn of the century Infantry tactics, or Bushido. (Please forgive my spelling, I cannot seem to get the damn ispell to work on my computer).

March 3rd thru 6th, He pulls ships away from Suva

Post by stldiver »

Well I need to talk to patrick about the 7th division, in my other PBEM I use units in sectors next to theirs for no PP charges, IE South can operate in SW and Central, Central can operate in North and South. The reason being with the flow of the battle field who is to tell where really the south starts and ends etc. Also for expediancy I do not pay PP if a unit will be in a zone for less then 6 to 8 weeks, ie. its there as a stopgap. This is how I viewed the 7th division, it losts its home in the south, Patrick invaded Dutch Harbor, US territory so it was immediatly sent north to interdict, I believe this is a realistic situation, it looks like the battle will last more then a few weeks, so I would then convert it to the North once PP's were available. I have always paid PP's for ABDA and West Coast movements as that is mandatory, as it is for the Japanese to move Kuantang and Home Island.

I don't believe I violated the spirit of the rules or war, but if Patrick feels strongly I will not use PP's for anything else till I convert the 7th to the north. This includes I will withdraw the CL and 2 DD's so they don't drain the PP pool.

Aside from that here are the results of the last two days, Dutch Subs get a kill and the Japanese BB's and Nandi head south of Nandi after a couple of ships they spotted the 2 days before.

I also reinvade Kai and Aru north of Darwin with a small Dutch unit, no units at Aru but Kai has non friendlys.

March 7th& 8th, Force Z and Company back in action

Post by stldiver »

Patrick spotted two ships 6 days ago, approx 300 miles south of Nandi for two days at the same area, he sent his BB's at Nandi to investigate, then they searched the area the next two days. The ships where actually Force Z plus Boise and other US ships from SRA area.
They dropped back down 120 miles and continued east, upon spotting two days ago, Patrick moving his transports to Tongatapu (SW of Pago Pago), probably to hold till the BB's dealt with the intruders, well Force Z went to full speed and destroyed two groups of Transports, total losses for the day 2 MSW and 7 AK , probably the another AK will sink also. Force Z was supposed to stay but they decided to move towards Pago area. Only Betty's at Wallis attacked from a lvl 2 airfield and the scored only 2 250kg bomb hits.

In Burma, Patrick captures Akyab, he had 8 units next to it and one moved in the same day my unit moved out.

In SRA, I did capture Aru island yesterday but pulled out my troops from Kai as I was outnumbered, Patrick moved in transports to reinforce Kai and my planes scored some hits.
