SPWAW - Gliders

Post by bryanmaguire »

I have a couple regarding scenario design that I hope you can answer (especially Wild Bill if hes listening)

1. In the flying chindits scenario a vickers jeep is landed by a waco glider. If I try to load a jeep onto a waco glider in the scenario editor it tells me that the jeep is too heavy. What gives?

2. In the lightning strikes scenario ammunition cannisters are paradropped. Some are also landed later in gliders. What unit type are these exactly. That have a weight of 2!!. I cant find any ammo unit that comes close to this. I cant see any way to alter the weight of a unit in the scenario editor so how was it done?

3. The british have airborne tanks called tetrarchs. The germans also have armoured vehicles whose class is "Airborne IFV". Is it possible to deploy these from gliders?

4. The british have a gun called a "2pdr portee". It is listed as a tank destroyer. What exactly is this?

Any help greatly appreciated

1 and 2 are secrets only Wild Bills hairdresser knows for sure :-)

3,. "Airborne IFVs are a "junk class" left over from SP3 that we used if we had to call something a differendt class for OOB purposes. We have ddedsome more classes in version 3 to help deal with this, but not all teh OOBs will have them implemented right off...but that will come a few weks later in an OOB patch.

4. Its a 2lber basically mounted in the bed of a truck. Sort of a poor man's SP ATG

I'll confuse you a bit so WB don't have to interrupt his scenario making Image

1) You have to select the jeep, press 'data' button and change the weight to something small. then load the jeep and change the weaight back. Or just leave the weight to that small value, you are not going to load it back to glider in the actual game...

2) this one I'll pass to Bill... Image I'd hazard a guess that he has hacked the scen.dat file directly?

3) and 4, writing this I noticed Paul's reply so I'll just stop here.

And no, i'm not WB's hairdresser even if I guessed right in 1 and 2 Image

How do I change the weight of a vehicle in the editor. When I click on the data button there is nothing there that will allow me to change a units weight.

/&%¤#...my mistake, mixed it with the 'size' button. I think you then have to change the stat in the oob editor, do the loading and then change it back to the old value with the oob editor. Unless WB reveals us how he did it Image

Actually I think he turns them into barges, loads them and then changes them back to gliders:-) But Hamilcar Gliders will carry jeeps normally.

Ah, good guesses, all, close but no cigar Image

Here is how I get around it, Bryan:

1. I purchase a Vickers Jeep.

2. I click on the "R" (Replace) button in the editor deploy menun.

3. I change it to an infantry squad.

4. I note which unit it is. (Ex. C1)

5. I load it in the glider. Now I can't see it. So how do I change it? Image

6. I go to the HQ button, click on A0.

7. I go back to deploy screen.

8. I start hitting the "N" (next) button till I arrive at C1.

9. I still can't see it, right? No matter.

10. I click again on the "R" button (replace)

11. I then go to unit lists and pick out a Vickers Jeep.

12. I exit the "R" screen back to deploy.

13. Now the Vickers Jeep is inside the glider.

14. Don't take it out! If you do, you have to do the process all over Image

Another trade secret revealed to my brother wargamers. Experiment with it, you'll get the hang of it Image

You'll probably want to jot these down or print this out for ease of reference.

Now as to #2, Bryan.

There are some missing icons evidently for you to get the right ammo icons. I'll send them to you and update the Lightning Strikes zip file. THanks...Wild Bill

Thanks for the info Bill. I'm banging my head against the table for not thinking of that myself.

Out of interest, why do you have The Royal Army Medical Corp motto in your sig ("In arduis fidelis", "Faithful in adversity").

Thanks for the new oobs and shp. The ammo cannisters look much better than the halftracks that were there!!

I still cant figure out what unit type you used. I cant find any ammo unit that has a weight of 2 and that icon. Did you hack the scen.dat?

Wild Bill,

The mystery has been solved. You used the ammunition unit in the new Norwegian OOB you emailed me. How is a guy supposed to figure that out?
I'm still curious as to why you have The Royal Army Medical Corp motto in your sig ("In arduis fidelis", "Faithful in adversity").
