Thanks!

One final question, hope you don't mind. My two 99 sys-damaged CVs won't be less than 50 in a looong time. Early '43 if I'm lucky. They, and their groups, are going to miss the mid-'42 re-sizing. Will they be borked or is it more similiar to ship upgrades, where you can skip one upgrade & still get the next?

No problem. Once the damage gets <50 (and assuming No Replacements is Off) the groups will resize at the then-current levels (whenever then is).

New questions on this subject

Post by bradfordkay »

Resurrection of an old thread with a new question:

I lost the Hornet some months back and have only a fragment of the VF squadron and a fragment of the VS squadron left (Chez struck from beyond her range, so most of the aircraft were aboard when she was pummeled by the bombers of three IJN CVs).

Will the Hornet have an airgroup when she respawns?

Will these fragments be able to rejoin that airgroup?

Will these fragments be the only a/c she has when she respawns?

If so, will they regrow to full size at least?

Brad,

I had a similar situation and asked pretty much the same questions. The answers I got were:

Yes

Yes

No, will respawn with parent unit

Once the CV respawns, all will be right in the world. If you look at the respawning carrier in the reinforcement list, it shown show the parent units on-board.

Until respawn, your fragments will not be able to add plane. For me this happened early in the war so I put the fragments on other carriers that weren't at max capacity.

p.s. I have not gotten to the respawn point so I have no idea if the answers are right.

Thanks for the quick answer.

Chez, don't worry... the Hornet is a long way from becoming available. I just wanted to ask this question long before it's necessary to deal with...

In fact, at this point the ship is so far off that the airgroups are listed as zero aircraft in each squadron.

And the work on the Yorktown is going slower than it should. If only these west coast workers would work like the boys back in Newport News... she'd be back at sea by now!

You might have some issues when your fragment doesn't have the same aircraft type as the returning parent.

Do you know of any work-around for that, should that prove to be the case?

Downgrade the parent to the fragment's aircraft and put them together, then upgrade again once they auto-combine. It's a bitch, but that's the only way I know of.

Okay, no problem. I'll still have plenty of F4F-4s and SBD-3s when the time comes.

I have moved airgroups off of badly damaged carriers to shorebases simply because they were useless where they were (and will be) sitting for the time being. In fact, 2 of these Dauntless squadrons that I moved ended up on Rossel Island in my PBEM against Saso and performed better than I could have hoped for, taking off from a land base and depriving him of a CVL and knocking a small CV out of action.

There are pros and cons to such an action. But given the rate of repair of my carriers in this game, and the fact that the game is a short scenario, the chances of the carrier being used again are very very slim. I'm better off with the aircraft being land based.

So as with everything in WiTP, moving carrier air groups to land bases is a situational thing.
