Revenge is sweet (even if it's small)

More of the same today - with a twist, this time Allied Dive bombers dished out some pain to Japanese warships off Amboina. Pilots claimed three 1000 lbr hits on a Jap DD, intelligence officers are skeptical since there was no sinking report.

In the Philippines, a Japanese Naval Landing Force landed and took the base of Roxas in the Central Philippines. Meanwhile the stalemate on Luzon continues.

18 JAN 06

A relatively quiet day across the Pacific, the usual aerial bombardments - but the Chinese Air Force chocked up another kill over Yenen I-153c pilots downed a Sonia without loss to themselves.

The real news of the day came from the hills North of Clrak/San Fernendo (hex 44-50) where the Japanese 48th DIV, 56th DIV, 65th BDE, 8th Tank RGT, 6th Tank RGT, and several HVY ARTY units Shock Attacked Filipino troops. The Japanese were once again thrown back as the Filipinos held on...USAFFE are still somewhat secure.
Where are the reinforcements promised from Washington?

19 JAN 42

A slower day across the Pacific, the big news was a major Japanese push (deliberate attack) in the hills north of Clark - this sent Filipino troops scurrying south once again...we'll see what develops.

In an air battle over Batavia, 22 Zeros escorting 17 G3M Nells bounced the Dutch & Australian CAP of Buffalos. The 22 Zeros first bounced the Dutch squadron of 11 Buffalos, and in a twisting turning dogfight downed 3 Dutch Buffalos without loss -the Dutch then breaking contact. Immediately after, the 22 Zeros bounced 9 RAAF Buffalos and accounting for three more Buffalos, while the Australians downed a Zero and damaged another. Then the Australian pilots tore into the Nells and damaged two of them.

Had the Buffalos been in one squadron, the combat would have turned out differently...

Good News and Bad News. Good News first. Allied intelligence has confirmed the Japanese Destroyer Kuri is on the bottom. Dutch Destroyers report oil slicks and debris from a submarine they hit, the O21 reports an MSW is no more.

Bad News. Manilla has been declared an Open City. Allied forces are offering the Japanese 36 hours to evacuate.

In other news, Commonwealth forces continue to hold the Japanese at Moulmein. Singapore is holding on and taking its toll on Japanese bombers with every raid.

Dutch, Australian and American forces continue to reinforce positions in the DEI and New Guinea area.

Manila has been declared an Open City, and has been evacuated (execpt, of course, for Corrigadore). The USAFFE has gathered at Clark/San Fernando, and Bataan preparing for a long stand.

Elsewhere across the Pacific it has been low intensity warfare today - except for a Japanese landing at Muntok on Sumatra.

At Paotow, Chinese Communist units attacked two interloping Japanese brigades and sent them off back down the road...

ABDA here:

Except for nuisance air raids on some of our bases, we are strengthening our position. Supplies are still critical, but we are shifting our resources around and making every place we plan on making a stand effective. We are looking forward to the day the Japs mistakenly think they can assault our defensive line.

Morale and confidence are very high.

ABDA out.

Japanese troops unloading in Palembang! That was bad enough news to Allied troops, but perhaps worse was a massive Japanese attack unfolding at Clark Field on USAFFE.
For MacArthur's and Wainright's troops - this is it. We'll see if they survive...

30 JAN 42

The Japanese have moved to the Clark Field area in great strength - 4 INF DIVs, 1 INF BDE, 5 Tank RGTs, along with Engineers and Hvy Arty, over 109,000 troops.
The USAFFE troops immediately launched a deliberate attack to push them back - but to no avail... the final siege has begun in the Philippines.

ABDA here:

Everything is falling into place. Units have moved into position and we are finally set to await the Japanese assault. Can't say to much without revealing our strengths and weaknesses...but I don't think we have any weaknesses. Port Moresby sent some recon aircraft over Rabaul, and look how our neighbors responded. Bad neighbors. Oh, well...they will be evicted soon. Once the action starts in the DEI and the Solomons we'll give more details.

ABDA out.

No air combat at all today..

The Japanese have gone through the formality of occupying a deserted Palembang and Tarakan... but the real show is in Luzon at Clark Field/ San Fernando.

There the Japs are preparing for the climax of their Philippine campaign. The USAFFE will do their best to make them wait a while longer for the finale.
