RE: Video Games and Aggressive Behavior
There will always be people who cannot separate fantasy from fiction. It's not the games fault that this very small minority cannot control themselves and go out and do various nasty things. As I said in my previous post, the Video Game market is the latest scapegoat taking over from books, comics, films and TV's etc.
Not ALL games are made for children.[:-]
GTA and the rest are virtual fantasy worlds where yoo take on the persona of the main character. The rules of that fantasy world are only relevent to that fantasy world and when yoo shut the game down and return to the real world yoo have to act within in the rules of whatever real life society yoo live in.
A very small minority cannot do this and the press and other Organs blow the matter out of all proportion and prey on the fears of the masses in a synical attempt to make more money, before moving on to the next sensatianalist story. Dust off the pet scientist get him/her to spraff and then put them back in the cupboard with a nice cheque for further research (they will be needed later).
Do I find the idea of shooting prostitutes distastful?
Yes, of course I do.
I would never do it in real life, just as I would never root, DOT and Nuke a person who thought or looked differently from me.
I am quite happy to do it in Everquest though [:D] and millions of kids are doing it daily in WoW [8|]
I am also happy as a clam to play the Germans in SPWAW. This does not turn me into a rampant National Socialist with delusions of world domination. [:)]
There has always been violence in human society, every generation has its violent period.
In the past it was blamed on squalor, overcrowding and poverty.
Now as far as I know we still have all that and more, but it does not make for a sensational, money making story, soooo lets find a scapegoat, the people are numb to poverty and such and won't by the paper, time to get out the scientist.
We all have a darkside and I would much rather take care of mine in a virtual world where no one gets hurt, than go out and shoot my neighbours... who are a bunch of snooty, stuck up gits who blame all the violence in the world on video games [8|]
Cheers

RE: Video Games and Aggressive Behavior
Hi Robert,
I agree about the way these games often portray women, and also concerns about some output of the manga genre. I'm uncertain what this does to the behaviour of kids or adults that get into it. I'm more worried that these companies are happy to put out this rubbish. These games reflect something unpleasant, though I doubt that they cause it. I really get racked off when people go an about "manga babes". I just loved the film Akira, so I'm not against the genre, but people ought to face up to the fact that "manga babes" are, for some dubious reason, given the facial features of babies and children (these features are so powerfully ancestral that the young of many mammals have almost identical trigger facial features) but they put these faces on sexually explosive bodies. Paedophile - enter stage right!
Sorry - it's a pet hate. Spent too long with people who justify their abuse of children on all sorts of spurious grounds, "other cultures" being number one on their list. Sorry I've deviated a bit from the subject, but on the question of how videogames influence behaviour, there are a number of ways of influencing people. If you take, for instance, the paedophilia example, people who are not disposed to it, won't become paedophile by playing Final Fantasy, but what they will do, for paedophiles, is reinforce their own rationalisations, enhance the disinhibition that they already have, provide them with a ready excuse, and give them a reassuring false sense that what they do is just what others think, but don't do. It also helps when they are painstakingly grooming potential victims.
I suspect the image presented of women, also reinforces stereotypical behaviour in people who are already bigoted or misogynist. This isn't a feminist nicety, but a substantial problem.
As regards the violence, I simply think that if you have a semi-automatic rifle in your house, or believe that others should be allowed to have them, then you've no right commenting on videogame violence. As regards, in the US context, the claim that citizens have a constitutional right to bear arms, I'd say bugger the constitution.
Now where did I put the largactil?

Context is everything.
Presentation determines response.
I am having to deal with my OWN bad behaviour, as I am a bit to prone to curse, and as a result my son thinks it's ok to as well. His mother thinks otherwise.
So I am having to cram it into his head that two dimensional foul language is his business on the schoolyard with his buddies, but failing to live up to his mother's expectations comes with costs ie loss of computer and or console gaming priviledges.
But who's at fault, mostly me, partly the fact that we as adults make it clear to the young swearing isn't "bad" through our actions.
Kids don't just start swearing eh, they are emulating what they are seeing. And they have been shown it's no big deal.
So when the 5 year old curses you out casually, remember, it's probably our fault.

Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

Bah!!!
You citizens of the UK lost your right to bear arms because you couldn't control yourself from poaching game from the Royal's land.[:D][:D][:D]
The right to bear arms insures that we American's won't be anyones colonial territory again, ever.[;)]
Violence and aggresive behavior is world wide.
Not just in America.
Education begins at home, within the family.
The same as responsibility for ones own action.[;)]

WTF are you talking about, Les? Oh, yeah, the "leading by example" issue. Admittedly, this Gyrene Fan sometimes swears like a sailor, so, uh, well, I'll just blame The Navy! Yeah, that's it. It's the d*mn swabbies' fault. [:D]

So true; but the real trick is to learn not to try and poach on anybody's else's land either. Sadly, that's a slightly harder lesson to grasp.

One thing people forget is the fact that the arms available at the time took a wee bit more time to shoot than a 9mm dual alloy Glock today...who was that comedian who said yeah I agree to everybody having a weapon as long as its a musket! I'll git ya, ya smishinfrackin (pulls open the balck powder cachet with teeth), just you hold there(loads ball and powder), dont ya be runnin away now ya hear! (strikes flint, so on...)---Dude Enya is a babe!!![;)], Swearing yeah..remeber Carlin with the seven deadly swears...I think disicipline is slowly being striped from parents...if pulled stuff and got caught I knew what was coming later...made me careful not to get caught but also you knew you were wrong(ya did it anyway) and your gonna have to pay...nowadays wait till your pop comes home is countered with wait till pop hears from my laywer...Too much political correctness has tied the hands of those politically courageous...just my 8 and 1/2 cents...

I don't get the issue with swearing... I could understand why religious people would be against saying "Oh my god!" or like. But what's the problem with using non-religious swear words?

Video games inducing violence is a myth. If anything, video games let you release your anger and aggression safely.
More and more evidence points to hunting as much bigger problem. People should not teach children to kill with a gun.

Children are not stupid they can tell apart reality and a video game. The problem is when they learn how to kill in real life.

RE: Video Games and Aggressive Behavior
I was referng to the George Carlin skit...as far as I'm concerned let the colorful language flow!! Really, I am disappointed with a large percentage of the population raising milk sop for the future, its nice to be so in communicado but, we are grooming a world of six graders on the phone for over 25% of their lives!!!. It really bummed me out to see how few younger people were out on memorial day, and those that were who thought it was for 1/2 price sale at the shops.
There is a lot of good coming out of the vid genre, rpg's have some great stories: at least we are getting some reading in...matrix has some great historical depth in thier games (whoa-promo-what I did for matrix today!), some of the 4X titles too, it is a matter of choice-if ya want depth or a quick fix...bottom line though if you feed your mind crap well heck it does start to stink and hey ya know that stinky smell is rot...very old book from the 70's The Subliminal Seduction: it has a great part where you kind of gestalt your surroundings and viola' you notice how much background seepage there really is ...
Play hard!
Play fair!
Nobody Hurt!

Anyone saying Enya is NOT a babe, can come here and pick up their sign eh.
Here's your sign.
Now, what's "more" wrong in society, your 16 year old daughter wanting to wear a thong bikini in the real world, or some nut wanting to watch anime girls in thong bikinis?
What's crazier, real girls wearing clothing that screams out "for gods sake rape me" (whether they really mean it or not), or guys watching silly idiot anime shows where girls are always flashing themselves?
Frankly I find women dressing with so little on you can easily see them as naked with the least effort, MUCH more annoying, than guys wanting to watch over developed animated images of girls that have nearly no connection with reality.

Any thread with Enya in it is ok by me.
Best wishes,

I love the smell of TOAW in the morning...
RE: Video Games and Aggressive Behavior
Yep! Enya's great. It's just that her music only ever sounds great on first listen, after which it gets more and ore boring. If you want Irish music, where the vocalist is ugly as hell, but the music's great - Pogues - everytime!
Sarge - I think there probably is a "left" smell here - must be me! [:D]

RE: Video Games and Aggressive Behavior
Ok I got it now...I'm listening to Enya doing a soundscape version of Cop Killer and its the background to ridiculosly endowed animated tenticle women who are clubbing seals while they eat recently hunted clubbed sandwichs, and armed bears are holding signs saying "venison causes violence in our schools today" but all the while it was the transvestite fatty acids that was the downfall of civilazation...ok thats it Im going back to sitting in my closet, sniffing glue and listening to episodes of South Park backwards because I know the secret of who really shot Kennedy (and JR) is in there somwhere!!!!!
