Fatal Error: 817??

Just downloaded the 1.804 patch and when I attempted to re-start the game, I get the message "Fatal Error: 817" on the initial load screen and the game doesn't load. I was using 1.80 earlier tonight with no problems!?!

I'm using CHS mod 2d.

Any idea what this error could be??

dr_stat,

Did you install the 1.801 & 1.802 (there was no 1.803) patches before installing the 1.804? If not you need to. You can't go from 1.800 to 1.804 with just one patch.

That's weird, since the download section says that 1.804 is a comprehensive patch. Are 1.801 and 1.802 still available on the Matrix site?

I'm having the same issue, only it's an 818 error.

Update -- I went back and re-installed the game and patched from 1.80 ---> 1.801 ---> 1.802 ---> INCREMENTAL 1.804 and everything worked fine. Something weird must have been going on with the COMPREHENSIVE 1.804 patch, at least for me.

Where did you find the patches Doc?  On the Patch page there is only one available.

I pulled the 1.801 and 1.804 patches from www.strategyinformer.com and the 1.802 patch from www.gamershell.com. Both sites allow easy, fast downloads and don't require registration or anything like that.

How large is this so-called "comprehensive" patch??

I'm not aware that one was made (that's not saying there wasn't since I don't make them !) but a true comprehensive patch would be in the neighborhood of 70+ MEGs ... whereas an incremental would be more like 4MEGs ...

The comprehensive patch is 80MB in the download section. The attached text with the patch reads, "The version 1.804 update fixes outstanding bug issues. The correction of the LCU leader handeling that was causing land experience to be increased to invalid levels as well as the crashes that were being caused by invalid pointer issues as well as fixing several other minor issues so that the players can concentrate on the game. This new update is a comprehensive update."

Ok then, sounds like a real comprehensive. There are issues with comprehensives, which is one reason I usually ask for them NOT to be released when we first put out a new patch. Most of the actual problems I'm aware of were all related to comprehensive patching on top of an ongoing game. For which I would use the incremental. But having the comprehensive is nice, if you are doing a full reinstall from the beginning. That is really what it is for.

I downloaded the install set from DR (v 1.50 iirc) then the "comprehensive" patch and get the fatal error 818 too. Maybe not so very "comprehensive"?


PS, Thanks for the info doc, the incrementals worked a treat. Matrix, any chance of putting the incrementals back up until the "comprehensive" works properly?
