Crash at start-up
About half of the time now, the game is crashing for me at the start-up screen. It goes through the introduction, then hangs up. The guy comes on te screen to tell me that Kentucky has joined one side or the other, then it hangs up. What's more frightening, is that it crashed windows today.
Others have commented on the same problem.
My system is 3 GHz CPU, w/ 2GB RAM.

RE: Crash at start-up
I had the same problem last night. Loads up to where the load bar is full, and ready to go to the next screen. It sits there for a few seconds then then pop up box for the Kentucky war event shows. After that the game locks up.
CTRL-ALT-Del show game not respondind. I closed game down. Then I restated the game and same thing happend. Ran threw the procedure 2 more times same outcome. Rebooted the machine Than I restarted game and it worked fine for the next start up.
sO far THIS GAME IS GREAT! just some little thing in it that I hope will get ironed out soon.

That's strange, unlike anything I've seen or heard about. Are either of using 64 bit systems?

Eric,
Mine's a top of the line Dell XPS graphic/gaming rig. I'm technologically-dense (64 bit)?

He was asking if you were using a 64 bit OS. If you don't know whether or not you are, that means you almost certainly are not.
I'm not an expert at any of this, but since a flash movie sits in that general area and since it is just for prettiness and not game related, I would try renaming the video directory (under Forge of Freedom) to novideo and see if diabling that video makes any difference.
Also, the newest gaming rigs often use the latest video cards with the latest (bug ridden) drivers. I'd definitely see if any video driver updates are available.

There's an idea. The windows related crash said it was driver related...
Can anyone tell me how to disable the opening video as jchastain explained?

Go to the "forge of Freedom" directory where the game is stored on your harddrive. Rename the "video" subdirectory to be "novideo" instead.
You might be better advised to try to update your video driver first though - otherwise you are just addressing a symptom instead of the real problem.

OS = Windows XP
The problem is random but once it happens it is repeated intill reboot.

I'm sorry, I thought that after your report you wrote:
OK. I have no idea why, but a reboot fixed the issue. After trying to start a new game at least five time, I finally rebooted and tried again. This time I was given the options pages (by that I mean "Local Game" etc...)
I (I guess mistakenly) took this to imply that your problem was resolved.

RE: Crash at start-up
Any luck disabling the video directory?
Try updating your graphics and sound drivers (and maybe your flash too?) and see if that helps. In COG, we found that nearly all cases of crashing during load were caused by obsolete sound drivers. Its sounds as though you're getting in further than that though.

No issue. The reboot fixes it (temporarily) which allows another game to start. When it starts to happen again, I reboot again.

DUSTOFF - What is your video card? NVIDIA GeForce 6800 here. Maybe if the two of us have this device in common, we can better diagnose the problem.

Andysomers - My vidoe card in that system is a ATI 9800 pro,
sound card is a SB Audigy 2
Im going to mess around with the system and the game tonight. I am going to try to see if some of the tricks from the forums and so on work, or makes things worse.

OK - my sound is the same as yours - maybe it's got something to do with that then. Let me know what you come up with - thanks for writing back.

RE: Crash at start-up
I SEEM to be okay now. I'll inform if there is another crash, and start developing those "novideo"/"noaudio" directories.
Thanks again to everyone for the support/help/advice.
