why oh why

Post by jejo68 »

A friend of mine and I downloaded v.2-3 at the same time from the same server. Yet it behaves differently.

More specificly, when I try to make a port attack with a japanese carrier fleet, my torpedo bombers refuse to drop torpedoes, no matter what I do.
I have tried putting all TB's on naval interdict, tried putting none, tried only part of TB's as naval interdic and rest none etc. Tried putting different commanders in charge, tried different combinations of ships. Nicht, nada, nothing :(
A funny thing is that the Betty (I think its that plane) bomber will happily drop torpedoes to defend ports against surface attacks, so its not a question about not being able to drop torpedoes as a japanese. Its only a question about my carrier planes refuses.

My friends fleet has no problem whatsoever in dropping torpedoes, when he plays japan.

Can somebody offer any explanation.

PS, we even tried copying his download to my machine, nothing changed.

PPS its not a problem when I play US, their carrier TB's drops torpedoes all over the place.

Could be a question of range. If your TB are at maximum range (usually 3) they will only drop 250Kg bombs. If this is the case try closing to range 2. The Betties launch torpedoes because their range is massive.

From page 18 of the Manual:

Naval Interdiction (NI):
Air Groups with Mission set to "NI" (Naval Interdiction) will never participate in attacking enemy bases, ports, depot/facilities, land units, or airfields. NI Air Groups will normally attack enemy TF's during daylight.

(Don't set your Air Groups to NI if you're doing anything but attacking TF's.)

The only other thing I can offer is if you attack from too long a range, but you've covered that. The one time I played as IJN I would close to a range of 2 to use torps (I was used to playing as USN...).

Maybe IJN ran out of torpedoes...;).
No idea on what could be the problem then. Sorry. In my computer Kates are a deadly weapon when properly escorted:D .

Yes, the original manual reads so, but my Kates do attack ports even on NI orders. Maybe the Matrix Edition has changed that, or maybe it was wrong originally.

The kate do attack, but it drops 250kg bombs instead of torpedoes. I use the exact same settings as my friend, but his planes drop torpedoes.
Its really weird.

I have found that shore based units on NI missions will attack ships in port and TFs. Ehile set to Day combat, they WILL NOT attack ports, unless they are dive bomber or torpedo bomber of course.

The rules are not very clear on this, because they stated that american and japanese ARMY bombers are subject to this limitation, implying that RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, Dutch, and others are NOT subject to this, but in reality I noticed that dive bomber and torpedo plane units REGARDLESS of their nationality / component tend to be able to attack anything in range, whereas tactical bomber planes need the NI mission to hits TFs AND to hit ships in port, even US Marine B-25 units.

Just another example of the superbly written rule book.

This makes those USMC Dauntless units the most versatile units for the US (of course FBs are also very nice).
Still playing PacWar (but no so much anymore)...
