Chinese Troops Capture Nanchag

Post by stldiver »

Chinese Troops seeing the Japanese capture Ichang with 28 units then head north, probably trying to cut my supply line to Chunking, decide to take matters into their own hands. The Japanese have been on a cost cutting exercise of not flying their planes to save Op losses and fuel, this has allowed us to move about without being noticed. Taking advantage of these two events over 125,000 troops march down the railline to Nanchang, where we knew only 2 units were there. We surprised them and at 16 to 1 odds pushed them out!!!!

We also recovered around 8k in supply and destroyed 19 dinah's on the ground
Hangchow, Sochow and can you believe it SHANGHAI lie open to us, and his main units are sitting in the jungle, who needs supply when you can capture good old industry!, speaking of Nanchang has Resources (14)x 186, HI (4) x 85 and 1 manpower (damaged in parenthesis).

These events where brought about by jealousy within the Allied commands, it started 6 days ago approx when the Dutch Molukkan Battalion landed on Kai and Aru Islands capturing the latter and drawing ships to be bombed to the former. The the British not to be outdone take Force Z plus into the Japanese Harbor of Tongatupo (sp?) in the South Pacific and sink 8 transports (the last went down today) and 2 MSW. Then also today the US ground forces not to be outdone race an armored unit up the PI road and Captured Tugeuegaro with 4k supplies in the Phillipines!
(These have been ordered to Manila).

I am sure Patrick will be doing this to the Emporer real soon [&o]

Post by stldiver »

March 11,12,13th and 14th Not much to Report.
In the North Pacific all is quiet, we bombard his units at Dutch he does not respond, although I have just noticed ship movement at kiska area.
In Cental Pacific he is conducting fighter sweeps of Canton, I do not fly cap till I see the bombers.
In the South Pacific all quiet we exchange bombardments at Nandi in Fiji.
In Southwest Pacific all quiet.
In SRA he pushed my 2 Dutch regiments out of Batavia, with 18th and 38 dive, 21st, 1st guard and 23rd Mixed. way to much firepower for the Dutch they retreated to Merak, that will be the last stand. Soerbaja sp? has not been entered yet.
In Burma he pulled his division bac to Pagan, he had moved next to Mandalay and did not like what he saw.

Ahhh China lovely land of dragons, what of our mad rush to Shanghai, well I gave orders direct to the city figuring they would march the rail line, nope Japanese troops on the line so my troops head cross country. It will be a few before they reach a rail line, allowing Patrick to extract his units from the Ichang area, and Yes they are all there approx 30 units back in Ichang coming for me. He has already stated he will take Nanchang with no problem, If only I can nab Shanghai, not sure with my delay in the hills. [&:]

RE: And you could hear cricketts

Post by Zemke »

The game is moving very fast, a combination of our two day turns and Tim has an excellent return rate, we are averaging two and three turn per day. I think that is because I am in Afghanistan and he is in the US, and it seems to work out. We are just over 100 days into the War. Tim's China operations are becoming a pain in the a$$, I need to get my head in the game over China. Java is secure, we are now moving into Phase III operations, which if you follow this thread, you will see what that is soon enough.

One note: Tim committed the AVG in China, and didn't have much success, even with their experience of 70. I did lose some planes, but he lost more. The air battles were not decisive, just a few kills by Japan each time there was a fight, which is good. I feel it was more realistic due to the inherent Nik mod and my maneuverability modifications to all planes. I think he lost more planes for the following reasons:
(a) Japan planes had an altitude advantage
(b) japan had better pilots 80-90 experience
(c) he was outnumbered 2-1 most of the time
(d) the proto type ToJo and the A6M2 were just better planes in all areas.....
The planes I did lose were Oscars, except for one ToJo, must have been engine failure..lol
We still have yet to have a real battle for contest of the skies anywhere but in China, and that was pretty small. When we do it should be very interesting.

I need to figure out how to do those cool maps Tim puts up, we just don't have as much money in Japan for computer generated maps, we do it by hand.

Post by stldiver »

From March 15th thru 26th not much happened, some sub attacks and ASW attacks, some airstrikes, Patrick Captured Batavia and all Northern Java, and Soerabaja, Kragen is last area with troops left and they will be destroyed shortly as he has several Divisions on the island and I have only 1 Dutch Rgt left and it is badly damage. Dutch harbor and Nandi ground forces bombard and I sometimes deliberate attack.

Well the quiet has been broken. In the North a large BB force looks like several CA groups and the KB has shown up. They have only bombarded Dutch Harbor and sank two AK's one carrying some troops at Dutch Harbor. He has a lot of AP's at Dutch, he is probably pulling out as troops have not landed. Not sure where he is going with it next, but the B-17s have been set for naval attack.

In China he has moved strong forces next to Changsa and NanChing, this will be a test of land forces, My troops that went off road are still trying to get back on the road. Near Homan I marched out 7 divisions and retreated a brigade on the crossroads but he marched in with 13 units and pushed them back to Homan, it bought 4 days for Nanching.
It will be a couple of days till I post pictures as I am on the road.

In PI, the 192 US tank rampages thru northern PI capturing Tuguegara, Aparri and Laoag untill it is trapped and destroyed, it was enjoyable.

In Burma, very little activity, The area is becoming a stronghold and I am starting to believe he has no intention of coming there which means I need to look elsewhere, Australia? Could be we spotted two DD's the other day that tested our airdefence and about 8 hudsons flew, confident I believe he moved closer the BB Hyuga, and it paid as I set all planes to naval attack, I score two torpedo hits on Hyuga and one on CL Kitakami, very happy as this is my first score on a major ship.

His main thrust must be in the north as that is where is main Naval Assets are, we shall see. These are a portion of the last two days reports.

BB Huyuga goes down from Damage

Post by stldiver »

Well its April 1st now and the last few days were a mixed bag of mostly good and one bad for me. The bad was that the japanese were able to remove the Sasebo division from Dutch Harbor, he was too strong to stop at the moment, but he had some DD's damaged by the B-17,s he sent them out as sacrifices so my planes did not attack the transports.

Know the good, I have sank 3 subs the last two days and the most exciting report, BB Huyuga sank [:D], it recieved 2 torpedo hits the other day from my Bueforts. This is my first kill of a capital ship.

As for the war status both sides can claim they have achieved their objectives, I have preserved my fleet and my imaginary do no pass line, and he has advanced to far and has preserved his fleet.
In the North he holds all Aluetian Islands west of Atka/Adak, he landed on the last ones while some of his CV's provided cover, The CV's (at least Soryu, Ryuho plus another) are still there, the BB's I don't know about.

In the Central pacific he mined Canton but encountered a DD unit that damaged his ships, but Canton is heavily mined by the Japanese, I think this stops him from landing.

In South Pacific we still fight at Suva, more like he bombards, occasional BB visit, and I bombard and deliberate occasionally.

In Southwest Pacific and SRA, he controls all and is building up Timor and other islands.

In Burma, he holds Akyab, and everything south of Mandalay, he advanced next to Mandalay but pulled back, probably waiting for his division to walk out of Akyab, they are almost out.

In China [:)], I have caused him some greif, he has only taken Ichang, and I have bounced several of his units in various areas. I also recaptured Nanching, but he is advancing on both Nanching and Changsa now. I have stopped him temporarily 60 miles NE of changsa, but he has entered Nanching and the railline to the west. This is all good for me as Chinese blood is gladly given in defense.

In India, its becoming a rock, but I have a feeling he has no intention of going there as I see little activity, IE shipping and such, and its getting to late for an attack there. Thus New Zealand and Australia, Midway, Canton stand as his most likely targets. Of course not couting Fiji.

One thing I must say about Patrick, I notice from recons, all the little bases he takes, he moves units too, and begins building a defense quickly, he will be hard to push back.

Japanese pull out of Fiji

Post by stldiver »

Well alls quiet April 2nd and 3rd except I thought Patrick was moving in troops to Fiji, but he actually pulled out the entire division. Thats two divisions he pulled out one from Fiji one from Dutch Harbor. I have to make sure my other beaches are secure, as those two are damaged but still functional. I like them better where I could pound on them.

North pacific, Patrick's ships are moving about the chain but no action.

China, he has moved in force into Nanching, battle should be tommorrow.

SRA he captured Java, the last Dutch resistance surrenders except a few units that escaped to other areas.

RE: Japanese pull out of Fiji

Post by Zemke »

The Dutch Harbor operation was a leap too far, (some would say fiasco)  The IJA 7th Division went in without proper recon, and not at full strength.  This lead to a blood bath, and if not for the no surrender "policy", the 7th Div would be lost today.  But it was not meant to be, the 7th Div sails for Tokyo for a much needed rest and refit.  Mean while back at the ranch, we "shore" up our defenses in the North.  I am building a proper defensive network with good airfields on multiple islands that support one another, with fortifications.  Once the 7th is ready it will garrison said Northern Defensive network.  I don't think he will risk another "adventure" North with his Carrier Force again for a long time, (or I hope not, last time he KO ed my one operational airfield with one strike, destroying over 50 planes on the ground, ouch![:-])

The FiJi Operation did not work out as planned either, another case of trying to reach to far too fast with the assets on hand. I landed where the least amount of troops were, hoping to get a foothold on the island and go from there. Once again poor recon did not tell me the 2nd Marine Division was there.  So instead of slugging it out in a battle of attrition, I decided the best course of action would be to withdrawal all forces.  This was done with only one AK taking a bomb hit.  FiJi troops will now become "farmers" if they want to eat, and I really don't need FiJi at this point anyway.  For cheap it is good to have, but with PagoPago I can do everything I need too.  FiJi is isolated and coved by LR Air.  He cannot move to or off of it without committing his Carrier Force to provide air cover.  So it works for me.  Maybe in a few months I will land again to find the starved survivors ready to surrender.

Catalina's score in the night

Post by stldiver »

Well the first time I have ever put Catalina's on night attack (ever) they hit an AP passing Manila. I tried this from remembering other AAR's talking about subs spotting for these. As my subs had been spotting ships in the area and not shooting. I decided to try the catalina's and I must say even though not a kill, it tagged on ship at least.

Also the British BB's put a pounding in Akyab, no planes there but good disablement

Also I wanted to mention a little about the minewarfare program as I am using a lot against Patrick. Of all the mines I have laid, since the beginning of the war Patrick has lost 16 ships for 96vp points, nothing to write home about but satisfactory considering my subs are the neutered versions with dud torpedo's and Allied sub ON which means they don't attack much.
Statistic wise here is some info.
Mark 6 mine claimed 1 PC, 1ML for 3 VP
MK 10 mine claimed 3 PC, 1 PG, 2 AP, 2AK for 8 ships and 58 VP
MK 12 mine claimed 2 PC, 2 PG, 1 DD , and 1 TK

as for Anti mine warefare, Stock game begins with approx 98 minesweepers (we are Nik mod), Patrick has lost 18 of those, although they come back it will be over a year and half and it affects his clearing ability.

Catalina's, ASW and Mines do the job

Post by stldiver »

Well for the minor accurances, I won the last two days, for the major event I lost a very important position.

In PI the Catalina's flew again and scored another torpedo hit !!!, Patrick has also moved the imperial Guards to Naga and was repulsed [:-] in the attack, as I spotted the troop movements several days ago and moved reinforcements down. It looks like Phase III is the clearing of PI. Must have gotten mad at my Catalina's on night moves.

Mines claim some more hits, and I bag RO-65 off the austrailian coast, both the Australian coast and The Pacific Northwest are crawling with Subs. He has hit some DD's but they all made it to a port as they where only a day away from a port.

In China is the most complex part of the war at the moment, with Patricks recapture of Nanchang he has shifted most of his troops to Changsa area and 10 units broke across the river north of Changsa and routed my units there. I had moved units from there to Changsa a few days before, wrong move. [:(], He is also trying to cutoff my main units pulling back to the area south of Nanchang, it will be an interesting month, I also have moved units back to Ichang, 6 days from now all will be there and hopefully push out his 2 units. I will post the map of china here that also shows the position 2 days from now.

Alaska is invaded!

Post by stldiver »

The Japanese have stepped onto American soil at Nome [X(], only a partial defense unit there, it will be flown out this turn as it was flown in two days ago :0). Also as you will see from the picture patrick is on a major push in the Aluetians, maybe I should have believed him when he said he would go to San Fransico, apparently he wants to do this overland! At the moment I figure his attempt will be to the Islands and Nome (which I will have taken steps to deal with. Also his two carrier groups TF 15, TF20 have been unable to launch the last 6 days due to weather, guess I was lucky with my CV's.

I have seen these forces begin to marshall the last few days. I doubt he lands at Dutch, as he already knows the strength there, he wants to encircle and starve those units out.

In China, he has encircled one unit, that was slow and is trapping the others south of Nanchang, in a countermove I am encircling his push NW of Changsa, at Ichang he did a deliberate attack and lost, and he has moved another unit in. All my troops should be there tommorrow for the push. I am more concerned with making him pay in lost troops then the ground. I believe this front will be fluid for a while.

In SRA, all quiet except bombings of left behind units in the jungle, and at Naga he is still recovering from his attack or waiting for reinforcments, He has moved more units up north next to Clark, but has not moved in yet.

In Burma I followed up with another Bombardment of Akyab with my BB's because of his putting Oscars and Babs there, the Japanese were last seen walking around in a daze. I have not spotted any evidence that he has more then MSW, CL and AK,AP in this theatre. I am beginning to believe the North is truly his destination.

Here are some reports for the last four days and a Map of the Aluetians.

Kodia Island invaded, blood everywhere

Post by stldiver »

Patrick has invaded in two of the 3 locations I had marked on the map. In addition his BB's bombarded anchorage along with one of his CV groups. The sole ship at Anchorage was a PT boat and neither side engaged. He lost a lot of planes to flak, and I lost a lot of planes on the ground and in the air. The B17's flew against one of the CV groups but could not break thru to the carriers. At least they tried.
In all 91 Allied planes and 73 Japanese planes will not report for service tommorrow.

He has two divisions the 4th and 5th, (last reported at Singapore and Port Morsbey) landing on Kodaik and a small unit on Umank Island next to dutch harbor.

In China the surrounded unit is killed, it was an HQ unit, it will be back in 30 days, but the VP points hurt. Also the 6 units, now 8 NE of changsa that I thought were divisions turn out to be construction units and small Bde, (he likes smoke screens) These will be pushed aside tommorrow and his troops that are NW of Changsa will be surrounded. I will also try to take Ichang tommorrow also.

In SRA, very quiet. In Burma my B-17's hit Akyab, I want to keep it closed, it is too close to my bases.

Surprise attack on Thurseday Island

Post by stldiver »

Patrick once again caught me with my pants down and at little cost to himself. He sent in Minesweepers and 2 AK's and captured thurseday island, to add insult to injury, I had 2 construction units there building it up, and they both surrendered. [:@] My fault for not putting ground troops in there. Live and Learn.

In the North, he capture Nome this turn, and continues to land on all three islands mentioned in the picture above. His two divisions will most definatly take cold harbor.

In China my attack at Ichang was repulsed at 0-1, he moved in a division to add to his 2 bde. But the good news, he also moved a division 60 miles NE of Changsa, and I pushed those troops back to Wuhan, Now I have his 10 units surrounded, (as he has my 10 surrounded in the south of Nanchang). These shall be interesting days in China, all my resource centers are pumping out supply and the china trail is open, so supply at the moment is not an issue. I just have to make sure my troops don't tire out quickly as to rebuild their fragile combat abilities is a long process.

In Burma, Akyab was operational again and caught some of my bombers, luckly only Blenheims sp?, This will be cured momentarily, stay tuned.

In SRA and the rest of the war all quiet, although I did spot a surface group coming in for its usual bombardment run at Fiji.

Allies invade Akyab!

Post by stldiver »

The 2nd and 18th UK divisions have started landing at Akyab, there is the 41st Rgt, 1 construction and 1 BF unit, so they will retake the base. No opposition initially but with two day turns, he will react this time around. Lets see what his airforce can bring.

In the North he takes the two small islands, but is stopped cold [:D] at Kodiak harbor, both deliberates tell him he needs to slow down. His carriers are searching south of Anchorage, looks like he may mean to land there. His unit at Nome is moving down the rail line.

In China he pushes a couple of units out that moved in NW of Changsa, but at the end of the second day, more have arrived, his supply has to be out this time. He deliberate attacked at Wuchan and knocked a fort down and his strength.

Here are the highlights.

2 Enterprises sink the same day, Black days

Post by stldiver »

Definatly a Black day for the Allies that started with such bold thoughts. Patrick had moved his CV's directly south from Anchorage to west of Seatle and he caught the CV Enterprise alone from 5 hexes, the early rounds were light hits, but planes kept coming, to indicate all the major CV's were in action, she survived the 1st day, but sunk the next. Then the KB turned its attention onto a 5 AK transport carrying supplies.
In the rest of the North pretty much bombardments, and airstrikes of little note. The Loss of the CV Enterprise was totally unexpected.

In Burma, Patrick hit my transport fleet with many Nells, Bettys, and Sonais, he eventually pushed aside my cap and damaged and sank many ships, total count will not be know for a few days, and more will sink tommorrow as I still have supplies to drop.

The only bright note was 3 British CV off of Alor Star intercepted 2 convoys bringing supplies nort and sank 3 Ak and more should follow as they also recieved damage.

In China he has completely surrounded my 10 units and they may perish soon. His also tried to attack out twice and they have finally run out of supply on the last attack, though my defenders barly held.

In total 185 Allied planes go down (over 80 on CV enterprise), and 115 Japanese planes will not take to the skys tommorrow, but since this our first major conflict we both have plenty of airframes.
10 of my ships went under, including CV and CL Enterprises's
3 of his have been confirmed but a couple should follow, only AK's though

Here are the major reports.
