On the map.
The road that crosses the river 2 hexes east of Yenen doesn't show up on the "W' key.
So I guess it is a phantom road hex. [;)]

Edit...just rechecked the map...I thought you were referencing the light rail near Sian.

I am playing a long term pbm game of chs as the allies - currently up to march 1944. It is an older version of chs v106 but the following issues also seem to be present in the latest chs v208.

Most japanese carriers never seem to get a radar update of ANY kind. This seems to adversely reduce their cap during the later war years compared to the americans. As far as I know all japanese carriers had air search radar fitted by 1943.

The allied paratroop units have several items of equipment which will not transport by air in the game eg 75mm pack howitzer. In real life all the equipment in para units could be broken down into air transportable loads - so please can we adjust the various weapon stats to do this.

My thanks to the chs team for producing such a good mod - march 1944 and nothing major is causing problems in our game. I would like the subs to be spotted less from the air but that is a program rather than a mod issue.

CHS has the CGC Haida and CGC Onondaga as "Taney Class" cutters. They are each seperate classes.

CGC Haida approaches Taney in AA/ASW armament but was slower. Onondaga was slower still and much less capable.

CGC Taney - 2700 tons, 19.8 kts max spd, 15 kts economical, 2 x 5/51 cal, 4 x 3"/50 cal, 4 x.50 cal (1941) increased 1942 to 8 x 20mm (1942) - rearmed in unique 4 x 5"/38 cal in single closed mounts in early 1943 but then deployed to Atlantic. Converted to AGC in 1944 with 2 x 5/38 in open mounts, 8 40mm in 2 quad mounts and 8 20mm.
Initial ASW armament in 1941 was 2 DC racks and 1 Y-gun. Increased to 4 K-guns in 1942.

CGC Haida - 1506 tons, 15.5 kts max, 9 kts econ, 1941-42 armament: 2 x 5"/51 cal, 1 x 3"/50 cal, 2 x .50 cal, 4 x Y-guns, 2 x DC racks. Refitted 1/43 with 2 x 3"/50, 4 x 20mm, 4 K-guns, 2 x Mousetraps, 2 DC racks

CGC Onondaga - 1005 tons, 12.8 kts max, 9.4 kts econ, 2 x 3"/50 cal, 2 x 20 mm, 4 Y-guns, 2 Mousetrap, 2 DC racks.

None of these ships had any armor though they all had shell plating double that usually found on a DD since in their Coast Guard duties they often operated in waters with sea ice. They were not however, icebreakers. Serving on CGC Duane, a sister of Taney, in 1973 I witnessed us plowing through 1-2 inches of sea ice pancakes at about 15 kts without any damage though (it was a little tough on the paint so that did not make the BMC very happy).

good site for all CG cutters of any sort: http://www.uscg.mil/history/WEBCUTTERS/

Photos of Onondaga and Haida in wartime regalia are in "Another obscure ship" thread. The lines of the Taney Class ship side in CHS are really sweet.

Don Bowen sent this to me ages ago when we were still doing the first generation CHS but we never put it in CHS due to a severe shortage of slots.

I agree. The pack howitzer was designed to be carried by a mule. It was easily tansported by C-47s. It's load cost needs to be reduced.

I don't know if the Torpbeau was ever used in the Pacific, but torpedo carrying equipment became standard on all Beaufighters midway through the Mk VI production run.

No No No!!! RAAF Beaufighter squadrons were raised, equipped and trained for the long range fighter (strafer) role. Though their aircraft were theoretically capable of torpedo strike, the squadrons were never issued with the weapons or trained in their use. (Ever wondered in the game why they are are classed as fighter/bomber rather than torpedo bomber like the Beaufort??) This was done (after a long hard fight) so the Beaufighter squadrons could conduct their historical missions.

If you can put up a convincing argument that RAF Torbeaus were used in the India/Burma areas, I'm sure you will get a sympathetic hearing for the creation of a new aircraft class as a torpedo bomber.
Cheers,
Reg.

After upgrade they are not, IIRC, forgot to say that (O19/20). I'll check the cruisers today, if I have time.

I see it now. Thanks again.
Andrew, this was part of the AA upgrades. Historically by mid 1943 British and Commonwealth cruisers lost their catapults and all aircraft handling gear. This enabled them to mount more AA guns. It seems that most British cruisers had serious topweight problems and had to sacrifice weight somewhere.

It's the other way around: they start the game with construction engineers, but will start filling out with combat engineers, and will never draw engineers during the game. I'd say the bug is in the formation unit, which should only contain construction engineers.

Of course you are right - that is what I intended to write, but managed to stuff up the wording (all too common for me).
There are also 5 US CBT Engineer Regiments in CHS - pure combat engineer units (they don't have a formation unit). A sixth combat engineer unit would be the 301st Provisional Engineer Bn., a Filipino unit. Then there are the combat engineers embedded in the Army and especially Marines Divisions... I'm no expert either, but I think this is a bug that can be fixed without further research.

And I missed these as I just did a very quick search looking for any other units that used the formation template (no others do). It has been so long since I actually played this game that I am very rusty on the details these days...

I agree - this can be fixed by simply correcting the formation template.

Thanks,
Andrew
Allof this was hased oout in previous RHS discussions. Here is a breakdown of the Engineer regimetns assigned to the Pacific:

Below is a total of all the different US Army Engineer Groups/Regiments serving in the Pacific in WWII according to Stanton. This list does not include any independent BN's. From studying Stanton it would appear that only two BN's were assigned to each Group/Regiment. The Engineers were being slowly reorganized into Groups, which were essentially the same as Regiments except the constituent BN's were given unique numbers, whereas in a Regiment the BN's were disgnated 1st or 2nd. The General Service Regimental organtization was apparently resistent to these changes and for the most part remained in Regimental TO&E. It also appears that the General Service Regiments were composed of two BN's, not three. Ditto for the Combat Eng Regiments.

Engineer Groups serving in Pacific
Combat--9
General Service--4
Aviation--3
Construction--15
Base Depot--8
Port Construction & Repair--5

Engineer Regiments serving in Pacific
Combat--7
General Service--24
Aviation--7
Boat & Shore--9

Total: 91 Regiments

Note: many of the Combat Engineer Rgt's were disbanded early 43 into individual BN's, many of which became organic to various Divisions. Some 20 or so additional general service rgts were earmarked for transfer to Pacific in late 45 but have not been included. Not included are the Construction Enginner Regiments...

If you can put up a convincing argument that RAF Torbeaus were used in the India/Burma areas, I'm sure you will get a sympathetic hearing for the creation of a new aircraft class as a torpedo bomber.

The RAF Beaufort squadrons that were sent to the CBI were trained for torpedo work. And most Beaufort squadrons converted to Beaufighters later in the war. No Beaufort dropped a torpedo in anger in the Far East because they never had any targets. They were only used in India and Burma and there were no shipping targets to attack by the time they got there.

I don't believe any land based RAF aircraft dropped a torpedo in anger in the Far East after the Indian Ocean raids of early 1942.

While there may have been torpedo trained RAF Beaufighter squadrons in India and Burma (I don't know if there were or not), they were never used. If they were in the game, it would take house rules to prevent them from being deployed in other areas where there are more shipping targets.

I was pointing out that the Beaufighters did have the torpedo equipment. I do not know one way of the other if the Far East Beaufighter squadrons had any torpedo training. The few times torpedoes were dropped by crews that weren't trained in that kind of attack, the results were dismal. The only drop I can think of that had any chance of success was the B-26 that dropped on the Rjuyo in the Aleutians in June 1942 and a wave carried the torpedo over the deck of the carrier. If the seas hadn't been so rough, the torpedo might have hit.

Get rid of the bombs on the P-61A. These planes were strictly night fighters and never carried bombs, and were never designed to carry bombs.

Maybe it should be changed to the P-61B? There were a lot more Bs built and they had hard points for external fuel tanks or up to 6500 lbs of bombs. The B was used in the night intruder role and some were even fitted with rockets for anti shipping work, but the glare from the rockets destroyed the crew's night vision, so the rockets were not used.

Oh my! I seemed to have opened a "floodgate". This was meant to be a small scale set of bug fixes...

To some specifics:
ORIGINAL: wdolson
The LB-30 was a very limited use plane. It might be better reflected to set the initial quantity to the 78 produced (I'm pretty sure it was 78, though it may have been something close to that) and set the production to zero.

I've thought about doing that, actually. I am not sure the number was 78. I will have to check.
The T.IVa, though a torpedo bomber by design, was never used for torpedo carrying during the war. Just after Dec. 7, 1941, they were field modified with bomb racks and carried depth charges on submarine patrol in rear areas.

I saw this discussed in a previous thread also. What I would like to know, however, is what to set the bomb load of the T.IV to. I couldn't find any specific information.

I will try to address more of these comments later...

Found the problems with Australia-class CAs and Leander-class CLs. Both lose their a/c capacity with upgrades, causing their float plane units to resize to size 0.

I'd strongly recommend to use excellent WitP EditorX. I used it's validation feature to Scen 155.
Some of these are not bugs..and most typos probably do not affect gameplay.

Validation of Leaders made *big* texst file, but only about 1-5 % were real bugs/duplicates etc. Everyone can check these by themselves using WitP Editor X.

EditorX really is a superlative tool. It's almost scary how much better it is than the stock editor.[X(]

Aye !! I will not touch the stock editor with famous 10-ft pole after EdotorX came. I have ruined few attempts with "easy to fook up" stock-editor already. EditorX is really a multitude better. Not to mention viewing, editing and checking Pwhex etc.

Just to pull out one random thing: it shows all three range bands for aircraft, allowing Endurance fine-tuning right then and there... Purrfect!

The LB-30 was a very limited use plane. It might be better reflected to set the initial quantity to the 78 produced (I'm pretty sure it was 78, though it may have been something close to that) and set the production to zero.

I've thought about doing that, actually. I am not sure the number was 78. I will have to check.

According to Baugher, the no. is 75 LB-30's. Of these, 35 went to bomber units, 11 to transport units, 6 were lost before assignment and the remaining 29 were returned to the RAF.

15 LB-30's went to 19th BG, 17 to 6th BG, and 3 to 28th Composite Group (36th BS). Additionally, 7 BG operated under the control of 19th BG during early '42, and some of the LB-30 found their way into this group.

http://home.att.net/~jbaugher2/b24_5.html

If you cross reference with Mauer, it turns out the following squadrons used the LB-30:

6 BG:

3rd, 25th, 395th, 397th BS

19 BG:

14th, 28th, 30th, 435th BS

7 BG:

9th, 11th, 22nd BS

If we accept Baugher's numbers on A/C allocation, it follow that 6th BG averaged 4.25 A/C pr. sqd, while 7th/19th BG averaged 2.14 A/C pr.sqd. In all cases did the LB-30's serve alongside, or to be precise, supplement one or more other aircraft types (B-17's mainly), which was a fairly common state of affairs for USAAF bomber units during this period.

We can only model one A/C type pr. sqd at a time in WitP. Logically that should be the majority A/C. Based on the evidence available to me (which, I'll admit, isn't conclusive), it would seem that the LB-30 doesn't fit this definiton in even a single case. IMO the LB-30 should be scrapped altogether while representing the airframes with an increase of the B-17/B-18 pool.

It doesn't help either that 6th BG operation exclusively in the CZ during the time it flew LB-30's.

Just cheked, and I stand corrected. Though the armament of the 47th should be changed to 2x 7.7mm and 2x 12.7mm. The production Mk IIb had 4x 12.7mm, though the later IIc had either 4x 20mm or 2x 12.7mm and 2x 40mm. I haven't seen which was the most common model yet. For changing the armamment of the 47th, you could do what el cid has been doing with RHS and edit the unit's aircraft armamnet.

I would upgun the Tojo to 4x 20mm and modify the 47th with the weaker armamnet since the 20mm armed version was probably the most important.

Bill

A total of 1,175 Ki-44-II's were producted. Of these, a total of 400 were IIc's and IIc-Kai's. The IIc was armed with 2x12.7mm, 2x20mm. The IIc-Kai's came with either 2x12.7mm + 2x37mm, 2x12.7mm + 2x40mm or 4x40mm (ouch!). 765 KI-44-IIb's were produced, making it the main production model. The remaining 10 A/C were prototypes.

This according to Bueschel, Richard M.: Nakajima Ki.44 Shoki IA, B, C/IIA, B, C in Japanese Army Air Force Service. Osprey 1971.
