You know that fighter group you borrowed?

Post by Cap Mandrake »

AVG was on loan to SEAC for a big raid on Pagan, at which the Japs had just stationed 35 fighters. There may be a little explaining to do [:o]

Oh well, they are volunteers after all.

Nah...I get that all the time. [8D]

Its not actually a screenshot. Its part of one of the .bmp map panels from Subchaser's mod. The flags I made myself. I don't think you could use them directly as a mod because is suspect the size is wrong, although they could perhaps be resized down. The rising sun is cooler than the meatball, but might look pixilated at game size (this is the jpg version which looks crappy compared to the bmp version)

Is Akyab really worth all this trouble?

Post by Cap Mandrake »

All the Zeroes that had been in the PI now seem to be in Rangoon. With only the outclassed Brewsters and the scarce P-40B's able to reach Rangoon, SEAC will just have to live with a mjor base at Rangoon for now. Not safe for the slow RN BB's to try to bombard either. At least his attempt to establish local air superiority at Pagan has been stamped out (for now). It cost 13 x P-40 and 15 Hurricanes to do it (with the loss of 13-15 Zeroes). The Hurricanes operating from Akyab prompted a furious response, but, in the interim, Mandalay airfield has been entirely repaired and resupplied. The other bright side is his troops trying to envelope Mandalay are getting hammered from the air and he is no longer flying Long Range CAP to try to protect them. I would gladly trade
a couple of Lysanders or Wirraways for tired, demoralized Zero pilots.

On land, the 33rd Division West of Mandalay and the hundreds of tanks have to be getting a bit rusty out in the jungle. He will not be taking Mandalay until some of the 3 divisions at Soerabaja or the 5 in the PI are freed up.

Graduation day

Post by Cap Mandrake »

***** No.2 Elementary Flying Training School. Jodhpur, India, March 25, 1942*******

Wg Cdr S Mukerjee, IAF:
<the first graduating class of 111 pilots stands at crisp attention adjacent to their Tigermoth trainers> "....I therefore hereby pronounce and do testify that your training at No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School is complete. You are now all certified pilots of the Indian Air Force." <uprorious applause, many caps fly into the air, in the excitement, even a few turbans from the Sikh pilots are thrust airborne...then after the jubilations subsides somewhat> Are there any questions?"

Fl. Lt. L. Subrmanyan: "Sir, a number of us were wondering what type of aircraft we will be assigned?"

Wg Cdr S Mukerjee, IAF:
"Damnit! I knew we forgot something!"

2 to 1 losses vs the Zero. That is the arithmetic at this point.

New Command

Post by Cap Mandrake »

**********Briefing Room, Sydney Aerodrome, March 31, 1942***********

<Maj. Schouten surveys the room. It is his first fighter command. Sure, his boys are green, but they are Dutchmen. They will learn. He had 16 brand new CW-21B Demons just arrived in Australia from the Curtiss-Wright plant. Most had no markings yet. That will come, a mere technicality. First, he must polish the pilots to combat readiness>

Maj. Schouten: Right, then. I hope you all found the facilities adequate. Are there any questions?

Lt. Van der Vort: Sir, where is the bomb bay door release on the Hawk? I can't find it.

Maj. Schouten: <"Good Lord", he thought to himself, "we've work to do."> Lt Van der Vort, is it? I believe you were a bombardier on the Martin, am I right? There is no bomb bay on the Hawk, son. This is a fighter. Anyone else?

F.O. De Jonghe: Sir, I was just wondering if Lt. Doorn could by MY wingman today. My fingers are sore as heck and I am still picking the bugs out of my teeth. I would love to have a go at the cockpit today.

Maj. Schouten: <his jaw drops momentarily, but he recovers from this reflexive action, "It is important to show confidence", he thinks.......then reality takes over...."dear God what am I going to say to their mothers">

I think it was attributed to Col. Frost in the movie. I don't know if he really said it....but he should have. Our opponent is gloating a bit about all the Allied troops falling into captivity. Things are starting to look sketchy in Bataan. He sent us the surrender proffer above just to rub it in. We (the Allies) are both tired of accepting Jap attacks and wan't to kill something. he may be trying to goad us into doing something crazy.

Probably not. The character was named Major Carlyle...
