Monthly update - end of June

Dutch airgroups can now upgrade - that should strengthen the Java defense. TBFs go into production. [:)]

Here's a map showing the historical Japanese advance vs. this game. The green line shows the current front in the game. All in all, I have to say I'm pleased:

Here's the intel screen:

A few comments -

Overall the points ratio went from 1.41:1 to 1.35:1. A successful month.

Air losses were 345 allied vs. 384 Japanese. 1.1 in my favor. I was hoping for better, but it's not bad. Overall attrition is down, however, since last month both sides lose over 600 aircraft.

Those losses include at least 90-100 KB pilots - good news there.

Jap army losses are still lower than I'd like. That should change in the next month or two.

China Supply - 177K (-1.1K). That's with reinforcements on for all units, plus some forts & airfields building. Despite the loss in supply I'll keep reinforcements on. The loss in supply is low & the situation will get better once I take Hanoi. If not in July, certainly in August.

Ship losses:

Code: Select all

      Japs Allied
 CVL 1
 BB 1
 CA 1
 CL 1

 APD 2 1
 AP 82 (+6) 7

 Aux 8 (+1)
 Mine 14 14 (+1)

Not much to report on, but I'm booored... 3 games outstanding and no turns in the inbox tonight. [:(]

DEI

I raid the port of Balikpapan again:

Day Air attack on Balikpapan , at 31,64
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 5 CAP is still low here
Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 3
B-17E Fortress x 41
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 damaged
Japanese Ships
AP Kuroshio Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Taibun Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Ayanami, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
AP Haisho Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Asagiri, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
TK Manju Maru, Bomb hits 1, heavy damage
DD Matsukaze, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Koshu Maru #3, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Tsunushima Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.7, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Japanese ground losses:
43 casualties reported
Port hits 3
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 3

I'm standing down the heavies again, but in general I plan to keep it up. I not only want to sink ships, but more importantly I want to divert fighters from the battle over West Java. Speaking of which:

Day Air attack on Bandoeng , at 19,61
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 12
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 29
Ki-21 Sally x 36
Ki-49 Helen x 56
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 5
Kittyhawk I x 9
P-39D Airacobra x 6
P-40E Warhawk x 26
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 3 destroyed
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 7 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-21 Sally: 2 destroyed, 4 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed, 8 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb: 5 destroyed
Kittyhawk I: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 4 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 10 destroyed, 7 damaged
Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 22

There's some fog of war in that report. Overall aircraft losses were 17:15 in my favor on the 1st. A2A was 12:8, again in my favor.

However, even with some reserves, I'm not sure if I can continue this fight. I'll try to, at least.

Elsewhere

The Yorktown VF squadron expanded to 36 planes. However, the disembarked Enterprise & Hornet VF squadrons shrunk to 14! [:(] Well, I knew I risked such a thing happening when I moved them off.

I lost an AK to a sub near Suva.

@ comander:

Here's some of my most-used fighters & fighter-bombers. I've been particularly hard on my P-40Es:

Good news is the Seafires. Once I get 3 more planes in the pool I can upgrade one of the FAA squadrons. [:)]

A lone Jap AP has been spotted near Batavia. I'm not sure if it just got lost or if a Java invasion is imminent.

Teleok... also fell.

Oops - Bandoeng's only a size 3 airfield.

Indian Ocean

A Japanese carrier force - Hiryu, Soryu, Sho & Zui I believe - is still hanging out within a few hundred miles of Port Blair. Port Blair's airfield is now 97% of the way to size 2, gaining 2% per day.

I think the next week or two might be exciting. Pat's launching two attacks & I'm launching one.

So Pac

Nells from Canton Island attacked a task force unloading at funandfruity. They put 3 torps into a DMS & sank it, though the troopships were unharmed. There are 2 TFs there unloading, and they'll continue to do so. However, further reinfocements (nearby) will wait until I have an airfield built in the area and can provide some CAP.

SW Pac

Comander - at Milne Bay the Seabee unit lost 1 engineer vehicle & 1 support squad, but most got ashore safely. The majority of the 30th Naval Base Force has now safely unloaded as well. The airfield's building up quickly and well be size 1 tomorrow.

DEI

Getting interesting here. A B-26 raid against Makassar destroyed 29(!) planes on the ground. [:)]

More importantly, Java's finally been invaded. At least 1 unit has started to unload at Merak. See the pic. It appears to be lightly escorted.

2E bombers only managed hits against 1 transport. Tomorrow and/or the next day could be a bloodbath, however. I'm sending in more LBA, carrier air, and some surface forces. Wish me luck!

Indian Ocean

I was starting to doubt it, but it does now look like the Andamans are about to be invaded. My engineers promise that they'll have the airfield ready for torpedo bombers in one more day. That might be one day too late.

Despite the nearby presence of 4 Jap CVs I'm also sending in a cruiser TF to defend against the landings.

China

SS Flying Fish attacked a Jap tanker in the East China Sea. 2 salvos of torpedoes hit, but were duds. However several shell hits did connect & burning oil was seen on the water.

With the Japanese starting to commit elsewhere, the 1st Chinese Uber-Shock Army has started to march towards Hanoi. Chiang Kai-Shek is not only worried about the Japanese presence in northern Indochina, but is also getting concerened about the growing Viet Minh influence in the area. (I didn't know this, but I recently read that the Kuomintang jailed Ho Chi Minh for a year or so during WWII.)

From Sigint & recon I now believe there's 2 divisions at Hanoi, not 1. That shouldn't be a problem, however - it's simply more Japanese to kill. Thanks to Woos, here's a glimpse of what's bearing down on Hanoi:

comander - in total on Java I have about 4 divisions of infantry, plus lots of base forces, some artillery, AA, CD guns, etc.

Speaking of Java, neither of us are yet giving up in the air war over the island. In 5 days this month 99 allied planes have been lost vs. 76 Japanese.

SW Pac

Operation Slinky continues & Milne Bay just grew to a size 1 AF.

DEI

During the night the British cruiser TF sinks 3 APs off Merak - that's all there was so I didn't need the CVs. Coastwatchers report 1052 dead Japanese troops floating in the water and 39 destroyed guns. (Sometimes the intel one gets is a little too much. [:)])

2 units and 2160 troops are reported ashore. Facing them is one Dutch batallion. I've ordered some planes on ground attack to get a better idea of what I'm facing. Looks like Admiral Patamoto tried to establish a beachhead on the cheap, but he'll probably need to commit more troops.

The Japs are bombing Batavia again - I had just moved some planes in & lost 2 Hurris & 2 Beauforts on the ground.

Japanese from Balikpapan joined the party, too:

Day Air attack on Soerabaja , at 23,66
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 24
G3M Nell x 42
G4M1 Betty x 7
H6K4 Mavis x 3
Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 11
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 damaged
G3M Nell: 2 destroyed, 17 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged
H6K4 Mavis: 3 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 5 destroyed, 1 damaged
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed
Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 10

I'm ordering some more CAP here & will counter-strike with heavies against Balikpapan tomorrow.

B26s based at Koepang are flying every other day & keeping Makassar closed.

Indian Ocean

A small cruiser force will challenge the Japanese about to land at Port Blair.

Also, the airfield finally made it to size 2!! [:)] I've packed it with 99 fighter-bombers & torpedo-bombers.

Image

Edit: I almost forgot. SS Seal took a shot at CV Hiyo south of Singapore & missed. The escorts hit her with a couple depth charges - 90 flt damage - probably won't make it.

I suppose it could be a bluff, but I'm going to treat it like it's not.

1. He had shipping parked at Sabang for about 3 or 4 turns. I think he's bringing some of the troops that he had there.

2. Even if it is a bluff, I can defend against it without stripping any other theater. Most of my LBA in India is sitting idle right now. Those plane types also have large pools so any losses will be easily replaced.

I'm also risking 1 CA, 2 CLs & 3 DDs. Even if I lost them all it wouldn't be catastrophic. Cannon-armed Hurricanes are flying LRCAP over them to limit the risk.

7/6 - 7/8/42

Some bloody days - mostly I'm getting beat up. I can console myself a little - at least I'm fighting in areas that aren't vital for me.

DEI

We've had fierce air battles over Java. In the last 3 days I've lost 102 planes vs. 78 Japanese, mostly over Batavia, Bandoeng & Soerabaja. And this is a Nik mod game! I'm slowly losing my ability to keep up the battle, but neither of us is ready to concede, yet. Here's an example of one of the air battles. Of course I'm picking one that went well for me:

07/07/42
Day Air attack on Soerabaja , at 23,66
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 20
G3M Nell x 17
G4M1 Betty x 2
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 6
Kittyhawk I x 7
P-39D Airacobra x 7
P-40E Warhawk x 18
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 9 destroyed
G3M Nell: 4 destroyed, 9 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb: 1 destroyed
Kittyhawk I: 1 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 3 destroyed, 8 damaged
Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 3

I sank another transport or two carrying troops to Merak. An additional Aussie brigade is unloading at Malang. Forts at Madioen have now reached 9. Hiyo & escorts are now approaching Batavia. I'll try to do more frequent updates over the next few turns as it's been exciting.

Amazingly, I'm still spiriting away oil & resources from Soerabaja & Batavia. Despite it being July, both bases have less than 10K oil & resources each.

Elsewhere in the DEI I've been intercepting Japanese transport planes trying to fly supplies into Aru Island.

Guns lost 2

I lost 2 good Brit CLs in exchange for 3 Japanese DDs. If I had also slowed down the the Japanese invasion, I could live with it. But I didn't slow it down. [:(] C'est la guerre.

The Japanese also bombarded a couple times. Here's one:

07/08/42
Naval bombardment of Port Blair, at 23,34
Allied aircraft
no flights
Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb: 1 destroyed
Hurricane IIc: 2 destroyed
Swordfish: 1 destroyed

CA Tone
BB Kirishima
BB Hiei
Allied ground losses:
95 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1
Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 48

It doesn't look too bad, but it essentially neutralized my airpower at Port Blair. See the screenshot.

Image

There's a little good news. I flew in most of a brigade until Japanese LRCAP started intercepting my transports on the 8th. I now have 175 AV behind level 3 forts. Also, I'm facing the Japanese 56th Div. It's been in continuous action all war at Singapore, Palembang, NW Sumatra & now here & I think it's in rough shape. I intend to hold here, but even if I don't it won't be disastrous & I'm spreading my opponent's resources.

Quick update.

Dutch subs have a good day, sinking a Jap destroyer & putting a torp into BB Hiei.

A Jap CV force is approaching Java. I previously spotted Hiyo & today planes from Akagi were identified when they sunk an allied tanker near Batavia. I suspect I'm facing at least 3, maybe 4 CVs.

I'm going to try to weaken it with LBA a day or two before I send my CVs in. Hopefully some of the LBA will launch.

7/10 - 7/11/42

We're still dancing around near Java & in the Andaman Sea, but there's been no major engagements.

West Coast

I just received my first major wave of conversions (ARs, ADs, MLEs, etc.), so I'll have plenty of ARs around once my damaged CVs arrive on the west coast. We're over 7 months into the game but I waited until the mid-Jan reinforcements before I did a lot of conversions.

Speaking of my damged CVs, Enterprise's crew repaired her from 97 to 96 sys while on the open seas. Yippee! [:'(]

Cent Pac

Nautilus, while on a minelaying run, put several shells into a Jap AK at Kwaj.

DEI

Lots of action here again. Air attacks against Bandoeng, Soerabaja, & Makassar. The most significant was this:

07/10/42
Day Air attack on TF at 21,58
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 43
Allied aircraft
CW-21B Demon x 5
Martin 139 x 4
B-25C Mitchell x 21
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 11 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
CW-21B Demon: 5 destroyed
Martin 139: 3 damaged
B-25C Mitchell: 2 destroyed, 17 damaged
Japanese Ships
CV Hiyo
CV Kaga
CV Junyo
CA Kumano

Bah! Even one hit would have been nice.

While my planes didn't see her, I think Akagi's with that group also (based on the wing-markings of planes that sank a tanker of mine a couple days ago.) On the 11th, the Jap CVs withdrew a hundred miles or so.

Landings are continuing on Java at Merak, but they're weak. (3600 Japs reported there now.) I've thought about ordering a counter-attack, but my main troop concentration is on the far side of the island.

Despite low supplies, I ordered a bombardment attack against the Japanese trying to take Kai Island. I'd forgotten what I was facing there & wanted to find out: it's 1 Div, 1 Brigade & 1 engineer regiment.

Andaman Sea

LBA was also unsuccesful against Jap carriers here:

07/11/42
Day Air attack on TF at 24,34
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 23
Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 9
Wirraway x 6
Hurricane IIb x 25
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed, 2 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged
Wirraway: 3 destroyed
Hurricane IIb: 13 destroyed
Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
CV Zuikaku
CA Mogami
CV Soryu

There was better news in the ground war. The Japanese launched an ineffective attack in an attempt to take the island. Pat should have rested the 56th division some & not used it so much:

07/10/42
Ground combat at Port Blair
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 7542 troops, 54 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 167
Defending force 8317 troops, 65 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 222
Japanese max assault: 144 - adjusted assault: 13
Allied max defense: 213 - adjusted defense: 257
Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese ground losses:
556 casualties reported
Guns lost 19
Allied ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

I counter-attacked the following day:

07/11/42
Ground combat at Port Blair
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 5697 troops, 51 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 219
Defending force 6885 troops, 27 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 131
Allied max assault: 194 - adjusted assault: 81
Japanese max defense: 73 - adjusted defense: 5
Allied assault odds: 16 to 1 [:)]
Japanese ground losses:
94 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
Allied ground losses:
80 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

I think I have a good chance of destroying most/all of a Japanese division here. The attacks will continue tomorrow.
