Realistic Stats

Post by Lucas718 »

I decided to run a little test just to see how realistic the stats are that the game generates. The following test was run in Release 3 using the Fun and Gun playbook, each game was played out cpu-cpu live on the field (not quick simmed), 15:00 minute quarters, american professional rules, sudden death OT. Some interesting results were produced. I think they look pretty good in most areas. The NFL averages were taken from football-freaks.com... if you play Madden and have followed Redwolf's slider project then you know what I mean.

That is pretty darn good!

It looks like I'll have to add a few more sack plays!

Hey Lucas, how many games did you use there for your test averages?
Besides the obvious (sacks, picks), I bet you can guess what stat area is bothering me a little bit. [;)] I haven't devoted a huge amount of time to MF yet (and I am guessing that a lot depends upon playbook and profiles - not my area per se), but did you see that Dave mentioned about the possiblity of adding sliders?!?...oh gosh, somebody stop me!

P.S. Thanks for posting this.

I know, sliders are everyones favourite.  Right now you can modify many of the games internal values by editing a text file in note pad. It works, but not really the most intuitive or user friendly way to go about allow those values to be edited.

So far only 16 games, so the sample size is small. I'll try to update the numbers after 32 games.

Redwolf, after following your slider threads the last few years I'm pretty sure that the YPC is what's bugging you. That one jumped out at me a bit, along with FG % (more on that later after I run some more games.)

OK, more about why the FG % was so low in the first test... I should also mention that this is with build 1.3.84 (I haven't updated to the latest release yet due to the problems with the depth charts)

While watching some of the games, I noticed that nearly every missed FG was due to the kick falling short. I opened the Fun and Gun playbook and found that kickers were set to attempt a FG if they were within 45 yards of the goalpost. Given that the spot of the kick is 7 yards behind the LOS, simple addition would equate this to a 52 yard FG. Based on what I had seen, this is a bit beyond the abilities of the kickers in the game.

So I tinkered with this number a bit. Dropped it to 35 to see what effect it had and over 8 games, there were 17 FGs attempted, 16 were made. A small sample size, but a pretty clear indication that this number was well within the range of the kickers.

I made another adjustment, this time raising the number to 40. After 9 games, kickers made 20 of 27 FGs (roughly 74%).

I used this as a quick and easy way to get a realistic percentage of missed FGs, but I think that overall an adjustment needs to be made to the kicker's leg strength as I'm noticing very few touchbacks on kickoffs. I haven't investigated, but I think there may be some setting in one of the txt files that would allow me to increase the distance on kickoffs. I suspect that if I adjust this then further adjustment would be needed on the FG distance in the playbook (possibly setting it back to its original setting).

OK, just opened the constants.dat file and found that there are separate settings for FG and KO strength, as well as FG accuracy.

I'll have to play around with these a bit.

For the kicking constants:

The other settings for passing all say that increasing the value will end up decreasing the accuracy. Is it the same for the kicking values? Will increasing the values for accuracy and strength end up decreasing their effects in the game?

The defaults for kickoff strength and FG strength are 15. I set them both to 20 to see what happens, and I see a noticeable improvement in FG distance (probably need to drop it back down a bit as they are easily hitting from 45+ yards). The kickoffs are all still coming down between the 5 & 10 yard line. Still haven't seen a touchback on a kickoff, so this number may need to be bumped up some more. I should mention that I set the FG distance back to 45 in the Fun and Gun playbook because I want the kickers to attempt longer FGs, but still miss a few. I'm thinking setting FG strength to 17 or 18 might be the sweet spot. More testing is necessary.

Just purchased the game. Was tired of Madden arcade system. From reviewing the forum messages, it seems that to have realistic game stats you must run each league game CPU-CPU. Simming games does not lead to realistic stats but the problem is being worked on. Does that sound like an accurate summation?

I think that's a fair assessment. Making improvements to the 3D on field game play was the priority for R3 (and will continue to be). I plan on revamping the quick simulation portion of the game to use the 3D game play engine, this will keep the two in sync as far as play results go. So yes, the problem is being addressed.

Shaggy and a few other beta team members have been tweaking the simgame file to try to even out the sim stats to have them better match the live games. Changes in that file should show up in a future patch.

Appreciate the continued updates on this matter. Goes a long ways to supporting the sports purchases made from Matrix over Xmas. Plan to check out the just-released Maximum Football Patch.
