Just wanted to say hi. I played the demo for HTTR (I think) a long while ago. Finally got an afternoon to read the Wargamer today and read the review and AAR there. I'm sold!

Thanks for the welcome ... I've bloodied my first Germans in the tutorial (which is excellent by the way!).

I've taken its advice and begun playing some of the "simpler" scenarios. I've played Sarantaporon: Day Battle a couple of times ... I've completed it only one time only getting a draw. [:@]

If I can ask, how does one handle an armor-heavy force on those mountains? I've kept my recon and tanks to the main highway and tried pushing my infantry up the hill with arty support. I can get there by nightfall but at terrible losses.

If you must deploy armor in the mountains, put them into a road column and adjust the settings for the particular situation.  The lead elements will be vulnerable, but if you put them off the road, they will slow to a crawl, or even stop.  Try to have a mortor unit and some fully supplied arty ready to fire on rapid fire settings (fire for effect) in support of your lead elements.

From my point of view, Sarataporon battles might be simple, they are not easy to win. I don't remember having done better than a draw myself after several attempts. I'd say that you managed quite well. And yes, the motorized troops are a pain in difficult terrain...

A couple of suggestions for starter from the top of my head :
- tanks at platamon
- tempe gorge crisis
- first clean break

All as Germans. Don't believe the briefing in the last one.

Thanks for the tips. I've found Grotius' AAR of the scenario. He seems to have had better luck than I with that ambush unit in the woods. Grotius seems to have pushed it aside come dawn with his Inf.

In my last couple of runs, that unit has been a bug-bear ... withstanding a lot of grief and arty, and ultimately slowing my taking of the hill till well after noon. This game is a wonder!

In any case, I've received my orders to take the Platamon so I'm busy drawing up my orders.
