[Dropback to] on Defense

Post by dreamtheatervt »

In my over-analytical way of thinking things, I figured a defensive player using [dropback] rather than [Move to] should be reading the offense better much in the same way the QB reads the defense while using [dropback]...am I correct in this assessment in game? If not, it would make sense to do so to make the [dropback] logic worth using on more than an asthetic level.

Also, when I have used [dropback] on defense, the player is too slow IMO. I realize that backpedaling isn't nearly as fast as running forward, but if they moved at 75% of their full speed (realistic for CB's, maybe 60% for LB's) it would be more realistic.

I don't think that Dropback changes a Zone or Read coverage, but it keeps the defender faced in one direction.

I agree it is a bit slow, but it may be timed to the quarterback Dropback.

Here is what I have seen using the dropback logic then zone logic for DB.  First while dropping back that is all they do they really arent reading anything at that point (so if they are dropping back and a R is right by them they wont neccessarily cover him until there logic changes to some type of pass coverage), when they get to the point they are directed to they will start the zone logic.   I thought the same thing you did and changed my DB that were going to be covering deep zones to that combination.  The first problem was that defense players with drop back logic move much slower going to the point than players with the move to command.  The result was that R were getting into the deep zones before the DB got to there point to begin zone logic.  I over came this by moving the safties back to about 11 yards from the LOS so hopefully they are facing R as the come downfield, and hopefully so they will get to the point to begin the zone coverage before R get to the deep zone.  This has seemed to work, but I still use move to commands for DB or LB that are closer to the LOS, that will be moving back.

I agree.  If dropback logic is used, it should be used for short movements and generally away from the line of scrimmage.

I have been experimenting with using the dropback logic to see if it will delay coverage so a cornerback will come up in zone underneath after allowing a receiver through.
