Quick Questions

Post by Sunrise »

Hi all,

I'm progressing through the "easy" scenarios before tacking Tutorial #2. I've achieved decisive victories at Platamon and at Maleme as the Germans. Though I've encountered some situations that I wondered if someone could explain. I've got screenshots so please bear with me.

First, in Platamon I noticed some odd pathfinding. Why would this unit take this route? I've left it up to the AI to determine the best route. Why would the unit go off the road? Because of the slope? Thanks for your help!

Ok, 2nd question .. when fighting at Maleme, one of my units (IV Hvy Bn) could not probe or assault. A number of the order buttons were blanked out. Why would this be? Adding to my confusion is that this unit is lead by an historically adept commander. Ideas?

Sunrise,

Re Hvy Coy not being able to Probe or Attack. That is simply because they do not have those capabilities. they are line support troops - ie they provide direct or close support for line units. They usually comprise long range heavy machine guns, anti-tank guns, flak guns and in some cases infantry guns. These can participate in an assault but they can't lead one. This must be done by a line or HQ unit. What then happens is the line support unit will drop off once it can observe an enemy at or near the objective and then it will provide heavy fire support.

Re pathfinding. What move type is the unit and force you have selected? I would really need a saved game to determine for sure. If you have one from just prior, then email it to support[at]panthergames[dot]com.

Doesn't the IV, Heavy Weapons batallion have one line unit, a pioneer company?

If you detach the only line unit a Bn has, the Bn will lose the attack orders options.

Thanks guys,

The Hvy Bn makes sense. Hans, there is no line unit in that Bn, there's a PanzerJaeger, a Heavy MG, and a Mortar unit so it's all support.

As for the movement issue, Arjuna. That route comes up at the beginning of Tanks at Platamon. It's the route the AI posits for the Krad Bn from it's starting position to the town of Panteleemon. I've run the calculator and it is the route for both the quickest and the covered route. I just wonder why a motorized unit would go off the road. I think it's because of the lighter slope, would that be right?

I checked the pathing with the pathing tool and apparently the small lake near the road has over-ridden the road class with 'impassable' at that spot. So the quickest route is in clear terrain up the mildest slope until the road is reached again, just like you found (nice find btw).

One of the more cryptic aspects of the mapmaking process is checking the path for every instance where a road runs close to or crosses a major or minor water feature (except stream beds). This location may have been missed.
