The Sinking of The Big E

Post by Zemke »

[:)]  Sometimes you just get lucky in this life of ours.  After turning over air cover to land based air, (using my new bases) for the invasion fleet operations around (and on) Alaska, I moved two KG south about 6 hexes about but abreast, with the intent of disrupting his shipping lanes. The intent was to catch a convoy or two on it way to Pearl.  We hit the mother load boys!  Not only did we find The Big E, but what looked to be three to four convoys and some had troops, one was an Engineer Regiment if the combat report is accurate.  The thought of heading on to Pearl for a Pearl Harbor strike II is limited by the need for fuel.  Else where....... in Akyab he has landed in force, but I unleashed massive land based Naval air and have sank and damaged many ships.  One British BB went down and others were damaged.  He may take Akyab, but it will be very expensive.  I hope them Brits are packing a lunch, they are going to need it.  I have been air lifting the 54th Div into Akyab to back up the Regiment defending there, also have tanks on the way.  I think if we hold in the next two turns, then we will be able to hold out till he brings in more troops, which will be expensive.  When Big Brother gets done in Alaska, he is coming looking for some British!  Oh and we are starting to clean up the PI problem, nothing major yet, just shifting forces from Java to PI, and shaping the battlefield with my Helens and Sally's.  Currently our main effort is in the North, but I feel that will soon be under control, and can be handed off to local assets.  Currently building up fortifications on all island bases and shifting supplies as need to continue that effort.  He did cause me to have to send emergency supplies to Rangoon he sank or damaged two fairly large convoys carrying about 50,000 in supplies....that hurt.  It hurt more that I really had nothing else in the AO to move more supplies to Rangoon, so Truk was ordered to send a load along with Tokyo and other places.  Singapore is at the minimum so no supplies will be sent from there.  Last turn I rested the Burma Air Force getting ready to cover another attempt to supply or land forces at Akyab.  My air losses were heavy, and not sustainable, but at the current rate of loss, he will run out of ships before I run out of planes.  Oh and his sub mining campaign is a big pain in the butt, so I have started it also, only I have been using mine laying ships at places I don't intend to land at presently, and if I do, I will sweep.

More convoys caught by KB

Post by stldiver »

Pat was correct he also the other day he hit a transport convoy these two days he hit a convoy carrying an Eng Rgt, and West coast HQ unit that I paid PP and convinced them the Pacific is the place to be, as they swim they have second thoughts. In Akyab there are many battles, in the air to many to post so I will only show the hightlights, the rest of the world is quiet compared to the north and Burma, China continues to be very fluid as we both have surrounded large units, but where as he is stronger then mine in both places.

There are some reports.

Akyab holds, The KB continues its terror

Post by stldiver »

Akyab held on my initial attack, it was 0 to 1 but his fort level is 0, The KB continued one more day of terror, then headed back north, actually it ran out of targets. I believe this is why he wanted the Aluetians, and Pago is to raid my shipping channels, we will have to deal with this threat. The British are not afraid of the KB, as there CV's rule supreme. [:'(]

In China, once more I will post in a few days a map, it is too fluid and I have to many ops, as does he to expose what I am doing. I can see what he is doing.

He knocks Kodiak down to 0 fort levels, and At Naga he begins his assault and knocks those forts down.

RE: Akyab holds, The KB continues its terror

Post by ctangus »

Interesting game - I've been reading this quietly for a couple weeks. Hope you're both having fun - you seem to be. I'm not quite sure why the Japs are committing so much to North Pac, though it's providing an opportunity to kill off some allied LCUs.

I'm a China geek - I'd be interested in that update. [:)]

Chinese surrounded troops routed, but relief saves them

Post by stldiver »

Ctangus, thanks for reading, I am glad you enjoy. I travel for work 1/2 the time and on the road cannot post maps, but in two days I will give a map of the events in china, today was a major day for the Chinese army.

This was good two days for the Allies, (not great, kb hit would be great). Nothing in the air war of note happened, he has flown in more troops to Akyab, it went from 407 AV to 467AV, we will hit it this turn with a surface bombardment and another attack, but we are not hopefull. It will be a long fight.

The major actions were on the ground,
In the North Kodiak holds again, vs 2 divisions.

In China the major battles took place, remember he has over 10 of my units surrounded 60 miles Sw of Nanchang and I mean completly surrounded, and has been pounding them for 8 days approx. I also have 10 of his units surrounded but don't have numerical superiority like he does. His troops are 60 miles NW of Changsa.

Well the last 8 days, I pushed his units back from NE of changsa, 8 units from this group turnaround and raced back to 60 miles west of Nanchang where the 17th division was a weak link in surrounding my troops, he has over 198,000 troops in the hex with my units. Well on April 25th my troops arrive and on the 26th they shock the 17th division back to Nanchang which also only has one unit. The next day my surrounded troops get attacked for the second day straight at 17-1 and retreat [:(] but my relief forces had opened up the escape route the day before and they all survive, though damaged [:D].

Patrick has to be upset over this as all his forces are in the meadows and will take several days to march out. This will allow me to retreat to Changsa and get their disruption down. I thought about Nanchang, but to many units compromised, its better to rebuild, as I really am still on the defensive.

In other good new the troops from Homan marched to the crossroads and routed the 13th divison, 34th, 8th Bde back into Kavieng sp?. They will rest these two days before deciding to march, but I control the crossroads on the raillines.

Here are some reports.

Map of Chinese situation

Post by stldiver »

Well, the turns April 28th and 29th I have misplaced the combat report, so just lets say, whatever happened did not change the world significantly. I do believe there was nothing major.

So here is a map of the chinese front as it looks on April 29th, and how my troops moved about to rescue 10 surrounded units.

333 Land based aircraft disapear from the skies

Post by stldiver »

Well who said Nik mod was not bloody, In two days of combat exactly 333 planes perish, the Allies lose 211, and the Japanese 112. Both cannot do this for too many days, but I will take 2 to 1 at this stage. Ok where to start,

I forgot to mention that he had been bombing Naga relentlessy for the last couple of weeks and had moved in 2 divisions a total of 13 units, 74k troops and 781 guns, these vastly were superior to my forces and I expected to be bounced any day. Not wanting to have disrupted forces on April 26th I started pulling out, and all the troops made it back to Manila, On April 30th he did the obligatory attack vs 0 defenders and captured Naga. This caused his shift to attack Manila from the air and he hit the port (which was occupied by SS the previous couple of days but they pulled out just in time, so no one home). Thus I will show the air attacks on Manila and its ground troops to give you a feel for the weight of his determination. He has also increased the number of troops North of Clark. Clark, Bataan and Manila are the only bases left on PI proper.

In the North he finally gets Kodiak, but he let his guard down on the 26th and 27th and I evac thru the air good chunks of both units, so they will survive and have a good portion to start with.

In Burma the airwar is heating up with him hitting my troops and me his. But this is not where the airborne slaughter happened that was much further south.

Darwin [8|] What can I say, Patrick did over a 100 plane fighter sweep and encounter just as many, for two days they hammered till they could not hammer no more. Many of the dog fighters died but so did many of my P40E, P40B. This combined with his building up the bases at Timor, and the spotting of a large number of transports at Kendari, (and no attack on india) leads me to believe this will be phase 4 of his operation to totally isolate shipping to Australia.

His keys are to use The Aluetians to base strikes into shipping off the west coast, use Pago and Noumea to close the other routes. And if he takes the north then possilby to Perth, Australia is isolated. This is his possible plan but it will not work, as I already have the plans.

Here are the pertinant reports and a screen shot of the days airlosses.

KB hits convoys next to Pearl

Post by stldiver »

Well Patrick wasn't kidding when he said he would be back at Pearl. The KB moved to 4 hexes on the 1st day but found two convoys and devastated them. Planes from Midway launched but where decimated due to the KB's cap, over 110 planes on cap, and over 100 fighters on the launch strikes. The second day the KB pulled back. It appears he had Naval set as first priority and port as second. I wonder what tommorrow will bring. As the KB is now 300 miles north of Pearl. I did not expect him back so fast.

My airlosses were 138 vs his 32, not good.

In Burma he is hitting the armoured unit coming to Akyab hard, I'm not happy about that.[:(]

In China, I did a deliberate and got 1 to 1 with the forces surrounding his troops, but the next day my reinforcments traveled across the rivers and shocked at 0 to 1 I guess the orignal troops were to disrupted. It will be a couple of days of rest before I start to hammer these guys.

All other theatres pretty quiet, he is pulling back his BB's in the north.

153 Jap planes are nevermore

Post by stldiver »

Well the fates, mechanism, miscommunication or just shear cowardice has caused the KB to send two strikes unescorted to Pearl. The results were a bloodbath of Kates and Vals as they meet a moderate but low class fighter force. Though they were butchered in the skies a few made it thru to face the murderouse AA of Pearl and were able to do more damage do the BB's Arizona and Oklahoma. They have been repairing at Pearl since Dec 7th and it looks like they will be repairing for quiet some time. (Patrick said the KB never left the area just refueled so my assumption is from the weeks worth of attacks that operation points were probably to low for an escorted strike, that or he somehow set the distance wrong, no idea really, he will not let me have a password to check [8|])

Also the KB launched strikes vs the damaged AK's from yesterday and promptly put them under the waves, all were at 90 sys or above from the days before and probably would have sunk on their own.

This left the tally for two days at 153 Japanese planes lost to 15 Allied, a reprieve that was needed. From the second days strikes the KB was able to only muster 19 Vales and 51 Kates, looks like its time for a counterattack although he still has his zeros, most of his teeth are gone.

In Burma he still continues to pound my forces, I set cap but it has not intercepted yet, I have to figure out whats wrong there.
In China, alls quiet except a few bombardments.
North Pacific, South Pacific, Southwest Pacific all is quiet.

PT boats ravage Transports

Post by stldiver »

I am consolidating the last 4 days, as I lost the combat report for May 6th and 7th.
Well on May 6th the Aussies reinvaded Thurseday Islands and promply pushed the Yoko 5th and Sasebo 5th SNLF's off the base. On the 7th and 8th they shocked but wore themselves out so they will rebuild a couple of days.
The PC CH3 hits mine and sinks, the KB withdraws north of Midway last being sighted on May 8th.
The North is quiet except he is moving his forces in and around, and a lot of construction units up there. He means to stay this logistically will be a big draw on his supplys.
In the Central, South and SW pacific all is quiet except for our liberation of Thurseday Island.
In PI he captures Clark, but I had already pulled all forces but one out and it pulls back to Manila with most of the forces. Bataan is only held by the CD batteries.

Ahh The good news! I just happened to look down and see that I could create 8 PT boats, so never having done this in any game before including the AI (never had good success with PT's, although I read others have). I hit the button to create them at Manila, and had noticed a troop convoy moving thru the channels to the southern base Legaspi, so I sent them there at full speed, The imediatly encountered 15 unescorted troop convoy ships and surprised them in the night. The proceeded to machine gun and torpedo them sinking 4 immediatly and probably the last two will go down. Many troops were sent swimming.[:D].

In China I attacked twice the surrounded Japanese troops, but they defend really good, 1st attack was 1 to 1 the next 0 to 1. I will have to rest a couple of days now. Patrick has moved troops 60 miles NE of Changsa and the ones from the south should be moving soon. I have ordered all outlying troops to pull back to Changsa, thus Patrick troops will no longer be surrounded.

In Burma, Patrick continues to pound my troops coming to Akyab and he has more units moving in. He has started reconning Mandalay so the attack there will start in a few weeks (he always reconns well and it shows in his attacks.

Here are the last two days reports and a photo of the PI situation.

Large land engagements soon to start

Post by stldiver »

Very little happened today. In the North the LBA from Anchorage worked over two AP's at Kodial. In Central, South and Soutwest pretty quiet except betties from Noumea missed against my ships still unloading at Norfolk. In PI his airforce continues to pound the surrounded defenders at Manila as a Large number of units are ready to move in.

In Burma a surface group with BB pound Akyab as well as his betties from Rangoon.
In China he forces back the slow retreaters back to Changsa, he has now 10 units NW that are no longers surrounded and 24 units to the NE of Changsa, it will be interesting there for the next few weeks. The reason for that is because I have moved a large force into Chengting east of Yunan, this city has very heavy HI industry and he only has 5 units there. My total force is over 3300 AV I am shock attacking tommorrow and will hopefully take the city. He has only 2 to 3 units in the cities around there including Peking!!!! If I shock him out of the city, Patrick will have a hard time fighting at Changsa as Chenging is more valuable to him and Peking is just a few days away. Wish me luck!

Chengting is liberated from the Imperialist

Post by stldiver »

Luck was needed and a massive amount of troops as Chengting is liberated on the second day of battle! 3 mongolian cavalery divisions the 1st, 3rd and 4th are routed along with a Base force and HQ. The first shock attack only achieved a 1 to 1 and brought the forts from 5 to 4. As I watched the replay I thought oh, no they may attack again and all my troops will be ruined and out of supply. But as the second day rolled around they did shock attack again, but achieved 6 to 1 odds on a level 4 fort, just enough to route the defenders!!!.

I captured over 33,000 supply (which was needed as all troops involved were 1/2 supply the next day. The industry on Resources was (75) x 145 so some was damaged, and Heavy industry was (47) x 73, which I believe 47 are damaged and 73 still good. Manpower was (0) x 2. I turned off all repair as I expect Patrick to come strong and I don't need to repair industry for him. As you look at the map Peking only has 3 units and when I look at it on the map it says Heavy Industry 71 (170), which leads me to believe he has not garrisoned it well enough and the peasants are destroying industry, if anyone knows if this is true please inform me. I need 2 days of rest to resupply my troops and to bring their distruption down. I can tell you their experiance has climbed very well, as these are vetrans of several battles. What happens next will be determined by how I see Patrick react around Changsa.

In other news, besides round the clock bombings at PI, my PT boats ran into a surface group and lost a couple. And my LBA in Anchorage scored some hits.

249 planes lost today

Post by stldiver »

Patrick had swept Chandpur the 2 days prior with about 70 zeros, so I setup and ambush of over 100 hurricanes at that base and the ones next to it. Most were there, they got the bounce and the massacre commenced. Unfortunatly it was the hurricanes that were brutalized, I lost in two days 126 hurricanes, Patrick lost 60 zeros, of which only 46 air to air, 11 were due to strafing, thats right they were on a strafing mission.

I am enjoying our game greatly so don't think I am complaining, Patrick stated his last opponent quite due to excessive air losses and he bumped up the Player pools and production for the allies (they need it). The pools will allow me to recover, but probably not again. Also I didn't think this bloodbath was as possible in Nik mod but the last week there have been great quantities of planes wiped out.

The saving grace for me was I launched a B-17 and wellington raid on Pagan and caught 19 Oscars,17 Sonias on the ground. Pilots not dead, but the airframes are gone. In total 136 allied planes and 113 Japanese planes are lost today.

In China, all got quiet and no movement on Patricks part except consolidating to Peking, I will rest two more days, units are all supplied, just some could you another two days for fatigue.

In PI he has moved into Manila, the battle shall commence soon.
All other theatres relativly quiet

Allied and Jap plane info screen

Post by stldiver »

Hi Nikademus,

Thanks for looking. I figured Patrick tweaked them from Nik mod, but never looked till just now. It appears the Zero and Oscar have very high manuverabilities, as does nate and others. Is this a big factor in aircombat results? Can the Corsair compete when I get it?

Thanks for looking.

You should probably find a Hurricane squadron and post the info screen for that unit as well...

Hurricane unit before battle

Post by stldiver »

I think I may have found a problem, somehow I had all the Hurricanes set for 100 feet, the ones at Chandpur anyway. I gather this may have a signifcant affect. Not sure how I set them there, don't recall ever doing it. Here is a picture of one squadron before the battle. Let me know if this is the cause of the drastic affects. Other fighters from other bases where set between 10k and 16k, but the majority were at Chandpur.

One thing leaps out

The manoeuvrability of the Zero lies above one of the hard-coded "knees" in the manoeuvrability code. IIRC somewhere around 36 manoeuvre there is a knee in the code which puts planes with more than 36 manoeuvrability into an entirely different level than those below. E.g. A plane with 35 manoeuvrability is a bit better than one with 33 but one with 37 is a LOT better than one with 35.

It will NOT be an altitude advantage since all the Japanese planes which conduct the sweep strafe and this means they are set to 100 feet of altitude also. Essentially though you are fighting the strafing Zeroes with no advantages accruing to your side AND a flawed air combat model.

In any case you should take two things away from this:
1. Ask your opponent if you can run one of the turns again FOR TESTING PURPOSES and set the Hurris to CAP at 8000 feet ( you don't want them higher since you want them to be able to hit the Zeroes... too high and they won't) and see what happens.

2. You seriously need to try RHS or Empires Ablaze ( which basically uses the RHS model but with a slight increase in effective range for cannons ) and compare and contrast.

Even when you get the altitude advantage I am willing to bet that you will see a lot of "Zero evades" due to excessively high manoeuvrability. It would be interesting to re-run this and compare and contrast.

BTW, how goes your war with jutland13?

Well, that's that settled then.

no prob. These figures are completely different from standard (and most current) Nikmod. That helps explains the huge fighter losses. the DUR factor is your primary culprit. I'm not sure why he is calling this a "modified" nikmod scenario.

alls quiet, Manila attack soon

Post by stldiver »

Thanks Nik, Patrick said he took your mod and modified it. Thus thats the title. I assume the rest of Nik is the same, Patrick can respond next time he reads the AAR.

The last two days where very quiet except for harrasment bombing raids on Patricks transports in Aluetians and Rangoon. There are a large number of AP's and CA's now in Rangoon. I normally would expect a landing but the KB was last seen several days ago north of Midway heading to Tokyo. I also hit ships in Rangoon from Chandpur, he had no cap up. Minor damage all. China has quieted down except some air strikes vs ground units. I think Patrick is trying to pull out his 10 units NW of Changsa, He has moved 7 units to the crossroads SE of Hunan.

In PI at Manila he has finally fully moved in over 4000 AV value, I bombarded to see what was coming here is a sampling, it will be a short fight.
Imperial Guards div, 2nd Div,18th div, 20th Div, 38th Div, 48th Div, 56th Div, 1st Guards Mixed Bde, plus usual support. A little overkill but the job will be done and thats all that matters. I'm thinking two of these had to come from china, I have to check.
