out of the box

not familiar with this series but it intrigues me and i have basically one question at this time. i notice a lot of database references and links for downloads. is the game playable out of the box or do i need to download a bunch of stuff to have an enjoyable experience? patches are a given but what about everything else[&:] thanks for any info.

It is certainly playable, in the same sense that a stock Japanese import you can buy it and drive out on the street no prob. But like with the car, a bit of tuning and add-ons and generally proactive interest can make a world of difference to the mileage and enjoyment that you'll get out of it. In both cases you won't regret the purchase but in the former you'll be simply satisfied while in the latter case you're likely to end up one more amazed dude who discovers something new everyday. And who knows, maybe even join the evangelist band with the rest of us
