There are lots of "good" places to move the 591st MP unit but I like this one best:

Image

It offers me control of a road hex, opens the possibility to attack the rear of the Soviet unit(s) and partially
completes the surround on the Soviet units there.

I want to move the 671st MP unit to the same hex as the 591st MP unit so as to be able to move the 591st to
the East side of the Soviet unit there ( since it has more movement points left than the 671st will have after
moving  ):

So first we move the 671st MP unit over there:

Then we move the 571st to the East side of the Soviet division:

There are at least 4 fairly good places to move the 682th MP unit:

Image

Option 2 isn't the greatest since I can move other units into that hex easily.  Option 1 takes 29 movement points
to reach of the 31 allowed leaving us with none to follow up with in later rounds.  Option 3 takes 27 of the 31
movement points to reach and isn't optimal for the same reason as option 1.  That leaves us with option 4 which
is relatively the best since it completes the surround ( after combat units are moved up ) on the Soviet unit
there.  I suggest we take option 4 for the 682nd MP unit.

I decided to move the 683rd MP unit to the position specified in the picture below just to save the bridge from
being blown in the Russian turn if for some reason there are any surviving Russian units able to blow it in the
Russian turn.

I decided to move the 685th MP unit to the position shown below because it will complete the surround on the
Russian division after the combat units have moved into position prior to combat:

Image

The 685th lost some equipment moving into the last hex due to the fact that it was moving
out of the adjacent enemy hex without any other friendly units being in the hex. I guess
I should have moved a combat unit in there before I attempted to move that last hex with
the 685th:

There are at least 9 good places to move the 689th MP unit to:

Image

Option 1's hex could be filled by a combat unit.  Option 2's hex likewise.  Option 3, 4 and 9 share the same
condition.  Out of all the options I think I like option 5's hex the best.  It helps fix the Soviet division to retreating
to the South away from the road ( after other combat units are brought forward to be adjacent to the Soviet
division ).  So I'll move the 689th to option 5's hex.

With moving the 693rd MP unit, again there are a plethora of options available.  I made the picture intending to
suggest that perhaps option 1 was the best but the more I thought about it I think I'm leaning toward option 2
instead.  I noticed that ALL the other options hexes could be filled with a combat unit and that option 2's hex
was deep in the forest and not a fast moving kind of hex.  I think the MP unit might be best filling option 2's hex:

There are at least 12 good places to move the 694th MP unit:

Image

Options 1,2,4, and 11 could be filled by any other combat unit.  Options 3,5,8,9, and 10 don't strike me as
particularly obviously beneficial immediately.  Options 6 and 7 would leave just one hex left to fill to get a
surround on two Soviet units.  I could move the 694th to option 12's hex in order to move the MP unit that
is already there to the east of the Soviet MP unit which would leave the Soviet MP unit surrounded ( after
other combat units moved up ).  After weighing all the pros and cons I think I like option 7 the best.

Now to move the 695th MP unit:

Image

Options 1,2,3,8,9, and 10 can be filled by any other combat unit.  ( Oops, there's two 8's ).  Options 4,5,6,7, and
8 don't strike me as particularly advantageous.  Option 11 would take all the movement points available to get there leaving nothing for follow up in later combat rounds.  Option 13 has the same problemo.  Moving the 695th
to option 12's hex would allow the MP unit already there to finish the surround on the Soviet MP unit ( after all
other combat units moved up ).  I like that idea, so I'm leaning toward option 12's hex and moving the 561st MP unit one hex further to the NorthEast.

Now to move the 696th MP unit:

Image

Options 1,2,3,5,9,10,13, and 14 can be filled by any other combat unit.  Option 7 would cost all of the available
movement points.  Options 4,6, and 8 don't seem obviously advantageous in the first combat round.  Out of all
the options I like 12 the best since it would will complete the surround on two Soviet units ( after combat units have moved up).

Now to move the 697th MP unit:

Image

Options 2,3,6,7, and 9 can be filled by any other combat unit.  Option 1 doesn't seem to offer any obvious benefits for the first combat round.  That leaves us with options 4,5, and 8.  Option 8's hex can probably be
filled by making that Soviet MP unit retreat.  Between 4 and 5 I'm leaning toward 5's hex since that would deny
the Soviet unit the benefits of the better terrain when defending.  So I'm going with hex 5.

RE: movement of the Artillery units next:

Post by larryfulkerson »

That's all the MP units.  Now to move the Artillery units.  Or rather, before I move any artillery uints I think I want
to start at the NorthWestern most end of the front lines and see how many units I can get to retreat before
combat since that will change where the artillery will go afterward.  The more units I can get to retreat before
combat the less I will have to attack during the combat rounds later to gain the hex involved.

The first one attempted was successful:

There was another successful one further to the SouthEast:

And another one further SE.  I decided to use the same unit in the attacks so as to limit the number of combat
units that don't have their full complement of movement points so as to maximize the number of combat rounds
we may be getting this turn:

And another to the South:

Image

Okay I traversed the entire front line and that was all of the Retreat Before Combats.

Now to move the artillery units: The tricky part of moving any Arty is that you can't move
'em very far or they won't be able to participate in direct fire in the first combat round.
There are two schools of thought appicable here: (1) move the arty into the position
where it will do some good and place it on Tactical Reserve so it can contribute. and (2)
move the arty unit to the spot where it will be able to do some good in some future
combat not particularly the current one. I kinda lean toward the first school of thought.

Here's the first Arty unit to move:

Image

I'm leaning toward option 1's hex since it's only two movement points to get there and
there are three Soviet units covered two of which are divisions.  The other options cost
more movement points to get there with no obvious advantages over option 1. I checked
with the "Plan an Attack" dialog and found that it CAN participate in direct fire in the first
combat round after it arrives in the hex it's moving to.

The second Arty to move can fire in direct attack mode without moving but I think I want to move it one hex
( one movement point cost ) to be able to fire in support of three targets instead:

The third arty unit to move has a range of only 2 and isn't in range of any targets where it is so it has to be
moved to be useful.  Of the options available for destination hexes I'm leaning toward option 2.  That Soviet
MP unit will probably be moved by combat and by moving to option 2's hex there will be two Soviet divisions
within range.
