All those using XP check your preference screen and make sure command & control (C&C) is off then retry playing. C&C is incompatible with XP.

The biggest fix is it's corrects a waiting for all players to sync error along with updated OOB's and it fixes issues a splash damage issue not effecting the targeted unit.

OK. Now we're getting wierd.

I downloaded and installed the sound update as suggested. I'm still quitting to the desktop but now it's when I confirm return fire. Not during the arty phase at the end of a turn.

Do I need to trash my save games :( and try a new campaign? Anythng else you can think of?

Tex Zero, I'd try trashing your saved games, starting a new campaign, and see what happens. I'm running v7.1 beta with Windows XP and so far no problems. gmenfan recommended trashing my saves and starting anew, so I pass it on to you.
Good luck!!!

I think I have some valuable informations about this bug since I'm experiencing it myself.

Last week I bought a new motherboard (ECS K7S5A) and new processor (AMD Duron 1200MHz). With that was a built-in sound card.

I reinstalled Windows 98.

After that I have experienced the sudden, random desktop crashes without warning or error. This occured in both PBEM's I have been playing since then (UK vs GE and GE vs SO) and also against the AI. If I create a new game, the desktop crash can occur both in BUY phase and in the game. Both in version 7.0 and the 7.1 beta I have installed the problem has been there.

I tried reinstalling SPWAW v7.0. Didn't work.

I tried reinstalling Windows 98. Didn't work. (current install had certain other problems as well)

I tried reinstalling SPWAW 7.0 again. Didn't work.

It never happened with my K6-2 400MHz.

Would it be necessary to state that I'm P*SSED OFF?:(

It happens when sounds are ON and when they are OFF. It happens even though I delete steel.prf. I have probably tried other things that didn't work either.
