Are custom subsystems possible?

Like the thread title says, is it possible to define new subsystem designs? The original ones are in a sys.def and define what components for example a fusion reactor has. I tried to make my own sys.def and even place it in a /systems directory, but the game is not reading it.
I'm hoping Milo or anybody could confirm if the game supports this level of customization at all...

If you are using the -filesys extension, I don't think you need to put the sys.def in its own folder. When de-datting the game, the sys.def is one of a very few files that is in the root directory.
