Now back to moving the land units

Post by larryfulkerson »

The 285th Sec. Div is next to move. I usually use the security divisions to convert hexes
and chase down remnants to the West of Riga in the early turns. There shouldn't be very
many Soviet units up there since mostly they are retreating to the East etc. So I wanted
to get the division moving north but out of the way of moving combat units as shown in
the picture below:

I think the 16th Army HQ unit should move as shown because (1) it's a hex filler unit mostly in these early turns, (2) I want to move the combat units as little as possible so they can take part in as many combat rounds as possible and (3) there aren't many places left to move the HQ unit so as to make the best contribution to combat outcomes.

The 253rd is next to move. It's not in a good spot where it is but I'd rather move this division after all the other combat units have had a chance to move. That way I don't develop any traffic jams ( and traffic penalties ).

I couldn't come up with a good use for the 2nd Korps so I think, for now at least, maybe
we should move him as in the picture below, if only to use him as a traffic cop ( to belay
any traffic penalties ).

The next to move is the 12th division. As you can see the HQ unit has some artillery tubes so I feel it best to move the HQ unit so as to cover two Soviet units ( by being on
tactical reserve ) and as one of the regiments has moved already he can't take part in any
combats in the first round. But the other two regiments I want to attack, at minimum
losses and limited attack mode, the Soviet MP unit. I want to use a limited attack
because I don't want them moving into the hex of the target after the combat since I feel
the need to move the two regiments further to the east for combat round two.

The 32nd Div is next to move. The HQ unit is fine where it is, so I just set it to minimum losses and tactical reserve. The regiment in the same hex with the HQ unit is to advance
into the forest and attack the Soviet division. I checked with the attack planner and it said
that the first combat round is okay even after the movement. The other two regiments of
the division are set to attack at min. losses the Soviet MP unit.

The 121st Div is next to move. I need to move the HQ unit to use it's artillery and a
comparison of the movement costs dictates it move to the NE hex. The regiments of the
division move next to the Soviet division and a check with the attack planner says only
two of them can participate in the first round's attacks.

I can't think of a good place to move the 10th Korps so let's leave him for later.

The 30th Div is next to move. As you can see from the movement costs of moving one of
the regiments this division can't participate in the first combat round without penalties. So
there's no good place to put this divisions regiments now. Let's move him later.

In moving the 126th Div the HQ unit goes one hex north to share it's artillery support on
the Soviet div in the north and the three regiments are to move one hex NE and attack
the Soviet div at minimum losses.

The next unit(s) I want to move are the 122nd Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex to
the SE and share it's artillery assets at minimum losses setting and the three regiments
are to attack the Soviet division at mimimum losses.

The next units I want to move are the 123rd Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex to
the SE to more fully share it's arty tubes, and the three regiments are to move one hex
to the NE. Then two of the regiments are to execute retreat before combat attacks on the
Soviet MP units. They retreat and voila, we have a surround on the Soviet division.

Next mover is the 1st Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex NE and bring itself in range
of two more Soviet units and the three regiments are to attack the Soviet MP unit at
minimum losses setting.

Next is to move the 11th Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex to the North and go to
tactical reserve mode at min. losses setting. I moved one regiment of the division one
hex to the north to see if it could participate in the first combat round and the answer was
no. So there was no need to move the other two. I don't see the need to attack the
Soviet MP unit with the other two regiments since the three regiments of the 1st Inf Div
should be more than adequate. No sense wasting supply and loading two more regiments
up with wear and tear if it's not needed I say.

Next I want to move the 21st Inf Div. First of all the HQ unit is to move one hex to the NE
and the three regiments are to move one hex to the NE. Then the HQ unit is to move one
hex to the NE and the three regiments are to move one hex to the North. Then one of the
regiments is to move one hex to the north to close the gap on the surround on the Soviet
division. That left the last moving regiment with only 2 movement points, not enough to
attack with in any combat round. I'm thinking I should have looked around more to see
if there was a non-combat unit I could have closed the gap with instead.

The next mover is the 217th Inf Div. First the HQ unit is to move one hex to it's NE and go
to minimum losses and tac. res. mode. Then the two regiments that are now in the hex
with the HQ unit are to attack the Soviet MP unit at min. losses setting. Then, having
looked around some, I found a security regiment to move into the gap completing the
surround on the MP unit.

There's no immediate use for the 58th Inf Div so we may as well get them started moving
toward the front so as not to lose 10% of our movement points during the first combat
round.

Now we get to the 1st Panzer Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex to it's NE and the two
recon units from the division are to move to the north and east sides of the Soviet division
so that the surround is complete. The HQ unit and the organic engineer unit do NOT
attack directly but the remaining non-moving unit do, at min. losses setting.
