Japs repulsed at Ichang
I bombarded to check Ichang two days ago and Patrick responded with a Shock attack. We damaged his troops very well. 60 miles SW of Ichang he pushes my division out with his division. All else is pretty quiet except usual poundings at Akyab area, PI.
His Submarine bagged a DD on the australian coast.

Modified Nik Mod
I modified the Nik mod, thus the name, as I have posted before. I did so because I felt the plane maneuverabiltiy ratings were not accurate, nor have I seen any of the mods that I think got it right. I am basing this own my own flight sim experience flying IL-2 Pacific Fighter online, which frankly I think has an excellent flight model, its not perfect, but very good. From that I used a data miner program that has all planes from IL-2 PF maneuverabiltity in radius of turn per sec at best speed, top speed at all altitudes, climb rate at all altitudes, max dive speed and so on. I took the best speed at one altitude for all planes and used that data, I took the best turn rate per sec, and lacking a real reference I doubled the number for each plane and used that for manueverability. I feel the Zero was vastly more maneuverable that any comtemperory fight of the day. American fighters designers were not as concered with maneuverability as they were with durability and speed. I may have set the maneuverabiltiy too high, but if dropped below 37 for the Zero, then all planes would come down also. I could do a little math and adjust the ratings of all planes down proportionally, but, I don't think anyone else will be playing my mod, it is not out on any public website and was done for my own enjoyment.
I think he lost so many planes because of pilot experence, and the Zero is more maneuverable than a Hurricane. I did lose almost everyone, so I was hurt far more than he was in the long run.
Other "modifications" I rounded all transports to an even numbers, for example Nik has the Japanese small transports at 750, I made them an even 1000 to so I could add them up easier and faster. I was not that concerned with accuracy as I was playabilty and I figured the stock small transports were higher anyway, so why not just make it easy to count, but still have them smaller than stock as was Nik's intent. I increased the support in a Division a bit, as a Division is a self supporting "mini army" if you will. I increased Allied fighter production, I decreased the number of Japan Pilots in the starting pools by 1/3 from Nik, I increased pilots for some of the Allied nations, while decreasing the starting experience of the Dutch, China, Commonwealth Pilots, and Indian Pilots. I changed the bomb accuracy of level bombers, I increased the number of bombs a level bomber holds back to stock. I changed the Japan Air Support Base units a little, adding a security element and more support. Anyway I did a lot, it was a lot of work, and now we are playing it. I would be happy to send a copy to anyone who wants it. If you like Japan you will like most of the changes, if your are an Allied fan you may not, just be warned.
As for the War, errr game China is a pain, but not my main effort never has been, so we continue to get pushed around there some. Never seen China so strong. PI conquest is under way, stopped all bombing, and will move the air else where, need to rest all my air. My Carriers are hurting badly from the HI attack, lost too many pilots hitting HI again, for little result. They also need rest in port, as they have been on operation almost the entire game, with brief stops in port.
The Alaskian Campaign is winding down, and it makes a great area to stage raids on his shipping lanes, and I am sure is forcing him to garrison the western US coast. Burma is same, except he was kicked out of Akyab, frankly I think he wanted me to attack so he would be given a boot along the road back to India. Why he attacked this early I have no idea, but it was expensive in AK and APs. I have taken losses in AK and AP shipping, but frankly Japan has so much shipping that it would take five times those loses to cause any effect in my ability to move units or supplies around. He continues with his sub mining my harbors operations, I find it a bit gamey, but oh well we never made a rule against it. So I have tried it to, but just don't have that many subs to risk. I am generally pleased with how things have gone so far. The purpose of the Alaskian Operation was to estiblish a forward area to base CV from where I can raid American shipping and the west coast. America is the biggest threat to Japan, and the more I can hurt or slow her down the better I will be. Everywhere else the war cannot be won, nor likely to be lost. Burma is not decisive to me as long as I can hold him where he is at, Austrialia is a Red Herring leading to lots of losses for no gain. I have enought supplies, oil and resources to keep everything running. Now it is a matter of preparing the islands for defense, and slowing the US as much as possible. The US is down two Carriers so that will delay him more than anything, and trust me if I can find other US Carriers, I will do my best to sink them also. But each day I can feel the Allies growing stronger and stronger, so we prepare for the Allied counter offensive with the goal to make each landing a nightmare! I am not finished with offensive operations, and will take advantage of oppertunities as they present themselves.

RE: Modified Nik Mod
Zemke,
Yes I read of your use of Pacific Fighters ( I think you said you used IL 2 Compare, correct?) --- I'd be interested if you could give links on that as I got IL2 1946 for Xmas and have Pacific Fighters etc and would be interested in looking at the data--- and think it is a very interesting approach.
I think that in REALITY your approach would be perfect for arriving at relative performances. Unfortunately we have to work within the game code and in the game code there is a "knee" at 36 manoeuvrability. If you just take the highest manoeuvrability plane you have ( probably either the Ki-27 or Ki-43 but possibly the Zero ) and apply a K factor such that its manoeuvrability is brought down to 36 AND apply that K factor to every other plane in the game, consistently, then I think you'll have a flight model which works extremely well within the confines of the game also.
In addition the durability also has unanticipated consequences and you may want to reduce that significantly also... Are you suffering lots of ops losses?
This is offered in the spirit of constructive feedback as opposed to ripping your work to shreds... It took me a long time to figure out the weirdnesses of the game and, even still, recently we have found out a lot of info about slots used for radars and HOW upgrades work which hadn't been known by either the CHS or RHS teams... so all modders are on a continual learning curve.

Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.
Manila is shocked May 20th thru 24th
I am combining the last 4 days due to low level of activity.
On the 20th my PT achieved a mid sea intercept. I saw him heading NW and set for 120 miles to NW and it worked for a night attack. On the 21st the dutch sub SSXVII bags one AK heading to Rangoon, 15th BF fished out of the water.
The biggest news in PI on the 22nd he shocked attacked, it was 0 to 1 but knocked down the fort to 5.
In Burma he pushed my tired division out at 2 to 1 odds. I will be back [8D]. He has moved 5 units there and 3 more along the road 60 miles SW.
In China he marched 9 units to Hunan, and I have about 7 there. At Changsa still the same units there as before. At Ichang I pulled my divisions back from the city.
In Chengting he has moved units along the road from the SW towards Chengting and has moved 11 units NW of Peking. I am starting to send feelers out.
On the subs and minlaying I learned this from other AAR's and really did not consider it gamey as It was used in the war. Patrick has responded with a lot of MSW up with his forces now. If he feels strongly I will reduce it to just the minlaying subs. His call. I am easy going, although these super zeros are killing me and I think the durability should be lowered a bit. But alas one cannot truly tell till the war is fought out.
Patrick ran a group of DD's to Norfolk and caught a TF unloading, fortunatly the MSW Lithgow gaves it all, and ony 1 transport and some troops were really damaged. We need more brave soldiers like this. On the land my division doesn't seem to have the pop so I have changed its leader and will rest it the next 4 days.

Well I would say little happened this turn but over 70 of my planes are down, for about 14 of Patricks, they died providing cover for the Landbased bombers from Anchorage, some ships were hit, some men are dead, but probably not worth 70 planes.
The good news is Patrick did two deliberate attacks vs Homan, the first was 1 to 1 and knocked the fort to 8, the second was 0 to 1. He probably won't be able to take it with the current forces.
Patrick also moved more troops across the River NW of Changsa and shocked, it was a 1 to 1 attack. I will have to address this.
Once again I am only showing reports of ship hits, or if heavy air to air, the minor stuff is just background noise.
In PI he still bombards.

RE: Human assaulted and holding
Nemo,
I can do that, but I don't understand why if you INCREASE DURABILITY you get higher losses, can someone explain that? I guess my next work over of this should be get Zero's or whaterver plane I see as the most maneuverable and set it at 36 and make that a base line then drop everything else proportionally down. I can also drop durabiltiy back to original Nik Mod ratings. I also think I am going to decrese level bomber accurracy more, maybe by half again, as I am seeing far too many level bomber hits on ships underway, which is completly unrealistic, as they were never designed to hit ships. B-17 had to drop a 1000 bombs to get one on a factory, from records of bomber accuracy in Europe, so it certainly could not hit a ship moving. If anyone has any data to support B-17s hitting ships underway I would sure like to see it, because if they did it was un-common or rare. I think for my next game a good house rule would be a level bomber min cap of 10,000ft. That would cut it down the hits also, while still allowing for some good effects on land bases. But these games take so long to play it could be years before I play a new one.
As for IL-2 Compare 3.04 version, I got it off a flight sim buddy of mine. I never could find it on line, but he did. There are several versions of the same program, the author updates it when a new IL-2 patch comes out. The data will most like not be perfect for the new IL-2 46, as the author usually takes some months to create the next version for each new patch, but I have heard from my flight sim buddies at 334th Squadron, (of which I am a member) that 46 is not much different except some new planes from 1946, the older planes are the same, so if you can find IL-2 Compare 3.04 it should be ok, or I can e-mail it to you. Be advised that I am NOT flying on-line now, as I am deployed with the USA in Afghanistan, and the internet connection here is very slow. But if you drop my name at the 334th web site they all know me, and should be happy to help.

"Actions Speak Louder than Words"
RE: Human assaulted and holding
Zemke,
The closest I can come to an explanation is to just state that that is what gameplay and testing shows. It is obviously hard-coded and based on the durabilities given planes in the stock game in order to model ops losses and readiness ( particularly for four-engined bombers). When the durabilities change significantly in mods this hard-code begins effecting plane types it shouldn't. Beyond this I haven't looked.
As to accuracy: Actually accuracy has very little to do with whether the bomb will hit the target or not. Whether a bomb will hit or not is a hard-coded thing and for a level bomber at 6000 feet of 80 Exp works out at suspiciously close to 1% --- I ran over 51,000 sorties and ended up with something like 1.06% bomb hits with the 6000 foot level bombers.
What accuracy mostly does is effects how much damage a near miss does. Essentially with 100% accuracy far more misses will be so close as to still cause damage. This particularly nerfs attacks against ground targets.
I've fiddled around with accuracy for PGMs to create some very powerful PGMs which almost always get a near miss if they fail to hit and had to reduce the accuracy somewhat in order to prevent them being too devastating.

Well, that's that settled then.

Chinese and Phillipine troops dish out damage
Not much happened today, it the Naval war, Patrick bagged S-45 at Kwaleign, it was pounded quite frequently. One of its brethren SS Grayling hit a TK in the Aluetians with 2 torps (no duds) and some gunfire.
The main actions was two ground attacks. Once again NW of Changsa Patrick is trying to push those troops out. He achieves a 1-1 the first time but 0-1 the second. A lot of Japanese troops and guns are lost!
In Manila he deliberates again the first day at 0-1 but knocks forts down to 4, over 7k casualties for his troops. Nice one for the PI defenders, the second day he only bombards as the stuffing was kicked out of him initially.

British CV's Launch near Rangoon
Another good day for the allies, even though 57 allied vs 44 Japanese planes are down, the British CV's went within 240 miles of Rangoon on a sneak attack and caught transports just outside the harbor, 3 went down and 2 more likely will. The return strikes from Rangoon all missed, but thats because only a few Kates and Vals launched, his betties he has been sitting, or moved (a chance I took) on the second day the CV's withdrew.
In China, Its really heating up NW of Changsa as Patrick moves another division across the river and shocks my troops on the second day. Of course they hold. I have moved some division towards the crossroad near Homan, he has 2 units in the way, I will bombard tommorrow to check who they are. His 5 divisions at Homan sit idle, must be a supply issue or disruption. Also I have moved some divisions 60 miles SE, then 20 miles NE of Wuhan where he has one unit. Tommorrow I will try and bounce it so I can cut his troops at Wuhan from the railline.
Newly laid minefield at Rabaul scores two hits. this was done by a O class dedicated minelayer, for all the grief patrick is getting I only have the 3 SS dedicated minlayers and about 6 other subs laying mines. All others on other ops, or repair.
He continues to pound Manila, and also some chinese units. He rules the skies.
All else pretty quiet.

LBA plays in Aluetians
The last two days of May 1942 are highlighted by ground combat and my LBA moving back to Dutch Harbor and playing with the local shipping.
I moved B-17's and B-26's back to Dutch Harbor and launched naval strikes. Nothing to change the war effort but scratch one APB, and one Ak, and several others damaged, Patrick has to supply forces around here, so I expect an attack on Dutch to try and neutralize this threat. He has over 106 ships at Kiska at the far end of the Aluetians.
Speaking of Kiska, the SS Argonaught (you know one of those minelayer subs) deposited a package the other day and while Patricks MSW sweep most of the field another AK hits a mine for Heavy damage.
Manila gets hit again with heavy air and the Japanese follow up with 2 days of Deliberate attacks, Day one 0-1 day 2 1-2 fort level is down to 3. The end is coming closer. But the defenders are very tough.
In China, 60 miles NW Changsa Patrick shock attacks and gets 1 to 1, he almost achieves 2 to 1, this is going to be close.
Near Wuhan, my division shock attack and only achieve 1 to 1 the first day vs the 22nd division but on the second day they get 4 to 1 odds and route the division to 60 miles SW of Wuhan. The road to Canton is almost open, but there are 2 other units know with that division, we shall see what his backup support is.
Near the crossroads of Homan, I bombard to only find one SNLF, and 1 tank, they will be pushed aside tommrrow. One disturbing development, Patrick has 2 units move back into Chengting, and 7 others 60 miles away. I will have to decide which direction to go, Cutoff his troops at Homan, or Defend Chengting, maybe both [:D]
A thurseday Island a fasttransport group, pulls of the 5th SNLF, It was a very tough little bugger but the 7th Aussie division is battle hardened now.
Here are the highlights enjoy, I am.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!
Showa rules!
Allied land forces rule the day
There were some bombings and some air battles but the two most significant actions was the Ground forces.
The Japanese attacked at Manila again at 0 to 1 and reduce the fort to 2 but at a high cost. For those non believers, defend Manila not Bataan.
In China on June 1st the Corps 60 miles from the crossroads retreat the SNLF and tank rgt at 15-1 odds.
On June 2nd the Japanese try to shock the Chinese moving 60 miles SE of Wuhan and suffer horrible losses, don't they know that most of the chinese troops are turning into battled vetrans!
The AVG proves pretty useless vs Oscars and Tojos, I believe thier manuverability is in the 40's I will post tommorrow the stats and position of forces for the last two months. I have also looked deeper into the changes that Patrick has made to the airplanes and its not good for the allies. Nates have manuverabilities close to 50. Didn't know they were that good in his computer simulation.

Manila is close to falling, Chengting almost falls
Land combat once again dominates the last two days, with Manila suffering another 0-1 attack but fort levels come down to 1, the end is near.
In China, the Japanese Launch against Chengting and achieve 1 to 1 with a fort reduction on the first day, but 0 - 1 on the second, so it holds for the moment. I don't believe he has enough steam and you will see I have forces that tommorrow will cut off his retreat.

Japanese expansion 60442
This is the current area, under Japanese control June 4th 1942
In the war so far, I gave up ground to early, as this is my second PBEM, I am learning. The only 2 stands that I held was Dutch Harbor in the Aluetians and Fiji Islands, both places he pulled his divisions out after they landed and were damaged. The air war is definatly in Patricks favor as he significantly upgraded all the Japanese planes, to compensate he increased production of early Allied fighters, but that just means more for him to shoot down, as even outnumbering him 2 to 1 with good experiance, I get thrashed. We will have to see how the later generation allied planes do.
In the Aluetians he controls all but Dutch, he even has Nome, I did not expect the force he brought into this area. This has allowed the KB to swing south silently and they caught the CV Enterprise and many transports. Since it has been several weeks, I will state that the CV Lexington was also within 5 hexes of the Japanese CV when the Enterprise was hit (not the same location) but was not detected luckily.
In the south seas, he captured thurseday island but I have since relanded a division and recaptured this little wasteland.
SRA is completly controlled by the Japanese, and all the PI but the Manila defenders barly hold on. They may not see the end of the week.
In Burma, my invasion of Akyab was repulsed. He flew in a division very quickly. He has not advanced on Mandalay yet.
In China, the ground battles have been fierce I have captured Nanchang, and lost it. He surrounded over 10 units, I rescued them. I then captured Chengting, he is currently trying to take that back. At changsa, he is trying to force his way around it to block the road, but the land war has been dragging out. He moved to Homan and knocked the forts to 8 but has not attacked since. In Wuchow its a stalemate, but I just recently sent troops to relieve the stress and they have bounced two divisions and tommorrow will try to push them back into Canton.
So overall both sides can claim success. In ships I have lost 2 CV's, (Enterprise, Saratoga) 2 CA's and some CL,s, while Patrick only has lost 1 BB Hyuga, and 1 CL. Most damage in shipping has been AP's and AK's The allies have lost 18 AP's, 74 AK's, Japanese have lost 35 AP's and 42 AK's. 8 allied subs and 13 japanese subs are also making permanent homes on the bottom.
A very enjoyable game so far, but I do believe the changes to the Japanese aircraft my be too much. We shall see.

RE: Top aircraft losses June 4th 1942
I increased all planes durability not just Japanese planes, and planes that had high maneuverability based on results of IL-2 Compare got increases, but not all, some planes lost maneuverability. I have the same results with kills in other games as this time frame. Frankly the Allies should not be doing as well as the Japanese at this stage of the war. The Allies will only start getting lots of kills with planes as their pilot experience increases and the last experienced Japanese pilots are slowly killed off, which if the Japaese player manages his pilots, can extentend that time out well into 42. Will better Allied plane models help, yes, of course, but in the end it is pilot experence that counts more than anything.

RE: Allied land forces rule the day
Nates have manuverabilities close to 50. Didn't know they were that good in his computer simulation.
Yes Nates are that maneuverable realative to everything else. They are not fast or well armed, but they can turn very well.

RE: Allied land forces rule the day
I'd have to say that from what i've seen I'd agree with the relative ratings... I just think Zemke wasn't aware that he should apply a K value to ensure that the highest manoeuvrability would be 36 with all other planes reduced by the same K.
Don't forget that the Nate was quite possibly the tightest-turning plane in the Pacific Theatre with the possible exception of the Polikarpov biplanes. However, in-game the determination of whather or not you get into a firing position has more to do with speed and surprise/radar than it has to do with manoeuvrability.

Well, that's that settled then.
