RE: Now back to moving the land units

Post by larryfulkerson »

Now we come to the 6th Panzer Div.  The HQ unit is to stay where it is and go to min. losses and tac. res. mode.
The two recon regiments and the organic engineer unit are to move one hex to their SW to reduce the stacking
density from orange/red to yellow.  I can live with yellow stacking density but I'd rather have green if it's possible.

The SS Totenkopf Div is next. There is no really really good place to put them. They're
too far away to participate in the first combat round so I guess the best thing to do with
them is to get them started on their move to the front so as not to lose any movement
points in the first round.

Now we come to the 8th Panzer Div. All the regiments of the Div are stacked in the same
hex as the HQ unit. The target Soviet division is in an urban hex which isn't good for
tanks and the hex the Div is stacked in is danger red/orange in density so we can at least
move the tank regiment out. Movement cost considerations suggest one hex to the SW.
The recon and organic engineer regiments can move one hex to the north to be in a
good position for the second combat round. The other two mechanized regiments are to
attack directly the Soviet division, at min. losses setting.

Now we come to the 3rd Panzer Div. As shown in the picture I want to move the HQ unit
and all the regiments except for the organic engineer to the road hex so as to get them
moving toward that stack of Soviet stuff in the East. Originally I thought they might have
to cross the river headed northeast but as it turns out there's already enough firepower
headed that direction and I thought a change of direction might be called for here.

Next is the 403rd Sec Div. I want to move the HQ unit one hex to the SE and set him to
min. losses and tac. res. mode, and the two regiments are to attack the Soviet MP unit
at min. losses.

In moving the 293rd Inf Div....he's too far away to be of immediate use in the first combat
round and I don't yet know where he's going to be needed so I thought we'd just move
the division to the road junction and move him more after the first combat round.

The 7th Inf Div is next to move. I want to move the HQ unit one hex to the SE and one of
the regiments one hex to the NE and then the HQ unit goes to min. losses and tac. res.
mode and the three regiments are to attack the Soviet unit at min. losses.

In moving the 23rd Inf Div I want to move the HQ unit and it's regiments as shown and
then assign two of them to attack the Soviet division. The third regiment had moved too
far to participate in the first combat round.

I think I may have made a mistake. In moving the 258th Inf Div I moved them as shown
but I think I should have stopped when I got to the road hex ( green oval ) instead. I
guess it was the lust of the hunt or something that caused me to move there. After the
elements of the division arrived at their destination they had too few movement points
left to be useful. I suppose in a game of this magnitude some mistakes will be made.

I'm thinking that the 268th Inf Div should be able to blast it's way along the road against
that Soviet MP unit if all three regiments attack it. And the HQ unit moves one hex so as
to share the effect of it's howitzer tubes over more Soviet units.

Now I'm moving the 137th Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex to the NE and the
three regiments are to move one hex North. The HQ unit is to go to min. losses and
tac. res. mode and the three regiments are to attack the Soviet division with a min.
losses setting.

I decided to move the 263rd Inf Div next. Two of the regiments moved up but moving
the third regiment would have given a stacking density of yellow and I didn't want that.
And the bad news is that moving onto the river hex caused the regiments to have less
than the optimal movement points left to participate in the first combat round. Well at
least we got them into a good position for the second combat round.

In moving the 292nd Inf Div the HQ unit is to move one hex North and then one hex NE
and go to tac. res. mode at min. losses setting. The closest two regiments are to advance
one hex to the NE and attack the Soviet armoured div at min. losses. The farthermost
regiment would have caused stacking yellow if he were to join in the attack ( which I
wanted to avoid ) so I just moved him into the hex with the HQ unit onto the road hex.

More Moving the land units

All the elements of the 131st Inf Div are to move two hexes to the NE and attack the
Soviet div ( at min. losses ) except for the HQ unit which is to go to tac. res. mode.

Now to move the 134th Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex NE and then one hex N
so as to share it's arty tubes ( tac. res. mode ) and the first two regiments of the div are
to move one hex NE onto the river hex. Moving the third regiment into the hex with the
other two regiments would have caused a stacking yellow condition and I wanted to avoid
that so I moved him one hex north and one hex NE instead. A check with the attack
planner said that none of the regiments could participate in the first combat round. I
intend to move some non-combat unit into the gap to close the surround on that Soviet
division.

Now I'm moving the 252nd Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move two hexes to the NE and the
regiments are to move as in the picture below. They have moved too far to take part in
the first combat round but at least they are in a good position for the second round.

Now to move the 8th Inf Div. The HQ unit is to move one hex S and two regiments are to
move one hex S and attack the Soviet division at min. losses setting. I haven't figured
out what to do with the remaining regiment yet. It's already moved too far to participate
in the first combat round. Maybe finish a surround with him somehow.

In moving the 161st Inf Div the HQ unit is to move one hex SE to bring four Soviet units
within range of his arty tubes and two of the regiments are to attack South and one
regiment is to conduct a limited attack to the North.

What I did with the 20th Korps is next. I moved him three hexes as shown in the picture
and conducted a retreat before combat against the Soviet anti-tank unit. But thinking
about it more I think maybe I should have done something else instead...maybe to the
North side of the front lines.
