The combat @ Hangchow over the last 2 days just looks weird 2 me. Results of the previous day don't seem to correspond with stated losses... I pulled a squadron of Nells from Japan and moved them to Takao to start pounding enemy ground units here and see if I can provide Adm Walkerd's troops with some support/relief.

So on this turn (12/26/41) I've:

Reassigned 2 squadrons of H6K4 Mavis and placed them in Siagon and Camranh Bay for Darren to use as he sees fit. They should help him locate enemy TFs or help spot subs.

In production management I've bumped up some of our Naval shipyards and increased production of zeroes (again). The Nate production @ Hartin is on hold until January and then it should convert to Oscars.

5 more SAA ENG Base Force units @ Tokyo are loading for deployment to Tuguegarao (along with plenty of supplies). This will let me move some of the Lilys 4ward from Takao for trashing allied troops @ Manila.

I see we still have a lot of enemy mines @ Hong Kong so I've deployed a TF of mine sweepers out of Pescadores to clean that up.

I'm sending additional fuel to Kwajalein from Ominato to support operations for a 2nd strike @ PH with KB.

I've moved another squadron of H6K4 to Laoag to support my Nells flying out of Legaspi in locating enemy shipping.

I've also moved all of the DBs and TBs stationed in Japan to Kagoshima this turn. My plan is to move most of these units to Darren's theatre once we spend the PPs. He can station them in the soon-to-be-under-new-management bases of Borneo. I think he wants to cut off any additional support TFs for Singapore.

most of my ground units in the PI are in movement for planned assaults of enemy held bases. They are moving slowly tho. Some of this is probably low supply levels in the PI. Supplies are enroute to the PI from Pescadores and Tokyo...

The HQ Home Defense Force has finally unloaded @ Naga (yes - I spent PPs 4 this - <laughter>) . I C no point in letting an opportunity to get my units blooded by combat go to waste and since we obviously have the allies with their tails tucked between their legs I want my HQ to get some combat experience while things are going our way.

Mike

So my engineers walk in without their INF support - I would have sworn I set them to follow...

So on my orders phase I would note that:

I sent TF20 with my last BB to Saigon for Darren to use.

KB is sailing towards a 2nd attack of PH.

Also, I have a lot of TFs with troops enroute to ramp up attacks in the PI - they just take a while to get there. And it looks like my TFs really need to be large enough to take all units assigned for transport immediately - in other words when I select the troops to load on the screen and hit "Done" that the message under loading says "Loading supplies" and not "Loading Troops." It took me three seperate Transport TFs to load the 48th Div from Pescadores to move the COMPLETE unit to Aparri...

China

Not sure if it is getting better. I am clearing out the Guerilla units. The armour is fantastic for this job. This also looks like the place to use Dive Bombers (other then ASW). Chinese AAA is poor and I will send most of the DB’s here. I also hope to over the nxt 6 or 7 months upgrade most of our DB’s to Lillies
Hankow and Nanching look like the weakest cities, will be easiest for the Chinese ti isolate. Hankow does have quite a few units in the vicinity and some supporting cities. Nanching is weakly defended and starts isolated. Am contemplating retiring. If I don’t retire it should take the allies some time to move me. Decisions to make.

Burma

Marching followed by more marching.

Malaya

It looks like most of the airforce has retreated or is now based in Singkawang. I do not foresee any problems. As stated my main aim is to neutralize Singapore, in particular the airforce. Next turn I start my air attack on Singapore.

DEI

Most of the invasions are going well except for Sandakan. Boise and Marblehead with escorts cut to pieces one of my DD’s and 4 escorts. The remaining DD will probably sink soon. As the allies leave by transports arrive and debark the troops. Good timing.

I have allocated a BB and several CL’s and DD’s to provide cover. I don’t expect the allies to try again so soon. Reacting rather then planning always leads to disaster and these guys seem to know their stuff.

Subs

Some of my subs have run out of ammo for their 3” guns as well as the torps. If I knew I would be having this much fun I would have sent more to Malaya / DEI. I am starting to run short on subs stationed at the front.

Overall

Not sure how we are going, it is all very hectic. My only initial concern is the wide spread use of PT boats. It may or may not be a problem. The aggressive nature of the allied defence just calls for more planning (so I may be replaced soon….lol)

Time to start working on Singapore. I might change to port attack and see how the bombers handle the morale and fatigue. I am wanting to soften up the coastal guns and then send in BB bombardment groups.

The most disturbing sight was the use of 4E bombers on low level Naval attack. This we can cope with now. If this means we will face massed naval attacks later then we have a problem. It was not mentioned in house rules but is a tactic I would never use as the game mechanics are flawed in this area.

PI
Troops are marching to Bagaio but it's taking 4ever. My ENG unit marched ahead of my INF units and was sent packing by the allies.
Heavy bombing continues @ Clark and Manila. And will continue until I own the PI.
Troops have unloaded @ Naga - a couple of more divisions of INF, a pair of Engineer units, plus another HQ unit.
I also have TFs headed for Tatay, Porteo Princesa, and San Jose.

Holandia
I moved a LB unit there to harass enemy shipping in the area. A fighter unit (Zreoes) is on the way (currently @ Palau).

@ Palau I upgraded the Claudes to Zeroes.

@ Sasebo Darrin is running a TF to Saigon which includes the AR from there. So I'm sending an AR to Nagasaki from Hiroshima (which will be my repair base for AP/AKs) and the BBs @ Sasebo are going to Hiroshima for repairs. I'm also sending an AR and an AE to Kwajalein to take care of any repairs needed in that area.

I also sent a pair of Transport TFs to Kiungshan to pick up the para units for an assault on Roxas.

Darren looks like he's having too much fun with the subs. And it looks like he will take the northern ports of Borneo.

I'm still pushing in the PI. KB is headed for another round @ PH, and I've basically sent the kitchen sink to support Darren in Malaya and Borneo. Hollandia will be fun to use as a push towards owning Port Moseby (although the major push will happen after I've "liberated" the PI).

--- ORDERS for JAN 04-05 1942 ---

My LCUs @ Tuguegarao seem to be having problems marching towards Clark. From both Tuguegaro and San Fernando, LCUs are only averaging a few miles per day. I've halted all LCUs for the next two turns with the intent of re-issuing movement orders the next chance I get. Also, I have split units - the 48th Division and the 65th Bde. I'm in the process of merging the straglers back to the parent units.

It looks like 4 Allied subs have been reported in the waters off of Puerto Princesa wher I have a TF of APs. I'm moving the TF to Taytay and have issued orderes to patrol chutia in the area to perform ASW operations.

I did order LCUs @ Taytay and Puerto Princesa to do a deliberate attack. There should be no problems as the attacks will be uncontested.

KB has moved to its jump-off point for an attack @ Pearl Harbor.
Image

I also ordered a Sentai of Lilys over to Legaspi from Takao to be used in operations against Manila.

NOTE to Darren: Ki-32 Mary DBs have an upgrade path to Lilys. I have enough Marys and Lilys set aside for you to change some of your DBs over to Marys and then to Lilys.

04 JAN 1942

Manila and Clark get pounded again. And again. And again. I'm trying to use up enemy supplies and keep the allies disrupted. From what I can see they have 17 units @ Clark and 10 @ Manila. Remember that I halted all LCUs that were driving 2wards enemy bases due to really piss-pour movement ratios. I think/hope some of this was because I had units that were split up. I'm also in the process of getting the fractured pieces of my LCUs back to their parents.

I need to be really careful to insure that when I transport units I get the whole unit. I need to be really careful to insure that when I transport units I get the whole unit. I need to be really careful to insure that when I transport units I get the whole unit. There - I said it 3 times fast (you gotta luv cut-n-paste).

Darren has his Army DBs pounding Chinese units - he's really working to mop up all of those nasty little LCUs and get his supply situation straightend out. Although he lost Nanchang I think he's having a blast with his DBs and ARM units.

The Allies keep running their B-17s on naval strikes @ 6k. Does anyone know what to set LR Cap fighters 4 to try and get a bounce? Is it +2k - so I should set some fighters @ 8k for LR CAP?

The Allies have a bunch of subs near Puerto Princesa and San Jose where my transport TFs are. Don't ask me why the subs aren't attacking - maybe they are outta torps? That would be too funny.

So Darren hits a few loose allied units with his LCUs and gets a few of them to retreat.

And in the PI region my troops capture Puerto Princesa and San Jose this turn.

05 JAN 1942

Darren has troops unloading @ Kuching - which of course is mined by the Allies... The AP Koan Maru takes one for the team.

The same stuff goes on with Manila, Clark, China, and Allied LBs @ 6K - just a different day.

But now my KB is getting into it - too kool! I had set my DBs and TBs to Naval/Port @ 9K with my fighters running CAP @ 70%. Also, I had some of my Jakes set for Port Recon - which I thought was pretty nifty.

So 20 Kates take off in the early morning and the CL St. Louis is the first to feel the wraith of the KB - Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

In the afternoon Nells out of Takao score a hit on the AS Canopus in Manila.

And of course my KB sends a few afternoon missions @ the wretched Allies who are huddling around the prime-time realestate of the Hawian Islands - which I'm thinking would make a great place for ADM 1EyedJacks to retire after the Allies surrender - <laughter>.

Just a note on the AKs/APs - it looks like they are loaded with supplies and troops - I just don't know if they were going somewhere (like maybe Wake) or if they were being unloaded @ PH...

06/07 JAN 1942 ORDERS from ADM 1EyedJacks:

KB will push to the North end of Hawaii and get two more attacks in.

Troops in the PI are on the move again.

TFs in sub-infested waters are trying to get the heck outta trouble.

LBs in the PI have been ordered to change their Altitude back up to 15k from 9.

I've still got fighters looking for PT Boats but I think the Allies have pulled them out of the area.

Minor production changes for air units.

Transporting supplies and troops here-and-there.

06 JAN 1942

Allies are starting night attacks @ Truk with Catalinas @ 10k. Since I haven't anything to intercept with @ night, there's not much I can do about it. You have to hand it to the Team of Chuck, Kenney, and Scott tho - they are fighting back with everything they have.

Units unload @ Lingayen in the PI. Something I discover when I'm working on turn 8/9 is that I can't seem to move my troops directly from San Franando to Baguio... An ARM unit I sent to Baguio has wound up in Vigan. I hope that after I take Lingayen my troop movement problems will cease.

Darren pounded Changsha with 75 Sallys... They kick butt when coming in @ 6k. He's also staging bombing missions @ Moulmein, and Singapore this turn.

I do Manila and Clark - the usuals for me.

The Allies send 16 A-24 Dauntlesses after my transport TFs @ Taytay. They get a bomb into the AK Hokuroku - [:@]. Where did these planes come from - Tarakan? @ San Jose 15 more A-24s tap into another TF:

08 JAN 1942 ORDERS

KB is gunna stick around for rounds 3 & 4... F have ALT set @ 20k - this is in an attempt to get the "bounce." DB are set for Airbase attack while TBs remain @ Naval/Port.

Image

The 1st and 2nd Paratroopers landed @ Lingayen - they have been ordered to shock attack the enemy unit holding that base (a static unit if I 'member right).

It looks like thew enemy subs near Puerto Princesa and San Jose are running to Tarakan. They aren't really needed with the Dauntlesses running havoc on my TFs...

CVL Shoho is in the game now and Darren has already nebbed her for operations in his theatre <laughter>.

I've a TF running supplies to Wake as I'm trying to build up Wake's airbase, port, and forts.

I'm running the 14th NLF to Truk and will shortly send additional SE units to Truk to support perations in that area.

I bumped the ALT of my bombers in the PI area up to 20k to help their moral.

China

Well Nanchang has fallen. With the set up in CHS I am not sure how it could be defended. While it shortens my line it does the same for the allies.

Kaifeng seems the other objective. The allies will find it has more troops, more supply, and most importantly of all has lots of reinforcements moving toward the city. I doubt I will be able to cut many troops off but I have no doubt this city will hold.

I seem to have retreated from Ichang but do not recall giving the order. Ichang has nothing of value other then allow my forward troops to be cut off , so retreating is in order.

Burma

I have moved up to Moulmein and it appears the allies are defending forward. Without knowing the location of the allied aircraft this could be a dangerous theatre. I will have two brigades and a division to deploy here so I expect to advance and take Rangoon but no farther.

My advantage is the low experience and morale of the allied units.

Malaya

I have dtsrted my bombing campaign and it looks like the allies have fled. I suspect some ground units have also fled so I hope to take Singapore moderately soon.

I am currently bombarding Johore Bahru with heavy guns only. This turn I will bombard with the whole force increasing my supply levels and then rest while the heavy guns bombard. I will start some ground attack by aircraft and then start the assault process.

I have 3 Divsions, 2 engineer units, 2 armour and 2 heavy artillery. I expect another 2 divisions to arrive. The question is should I divert the Burma Division as well and leave 2 brigades to hold the line near Rangoon.

DEI

My invasion fleets for Tarakan and Samarinda are at sea. I have diverted the 2 units assigned to invade Singkawang to Kuching. I was very disappointed to notice an Australian Brigade at Kuching. (see below)

My invasion style will change. I will now move in large formation with BB and CVL support and smash one base at a time.

Overall

The allies are fighting hard and fighting for each inch of ground. Nothing wrong with that. When I noticed low flying B17 I thought they were pushing the game mechanics. The game system gives 4E bombers far more effect at low level then they should. CHS will how ever limit the bombers allowed.

What did make me start to lose interest was the deployment of an Australian brigade to Kuching. I would never, ever make such a move. The Australian government would never have allowed it. It is using 100% hind sight. It feels very much a style of play that I prefer not to do or play against.

It is certainly defeatable but it is the play style that means rather then wait for my DEI invasions I should have actioned them on Dec 7. The reason I did not is purely because I dislike using 100% hind sight and playing with knowledge I should not have. You have to in this game to some extent but it is up to the player to decide the style of game they want.

Just me I guess but I prefer historical limitations rather then game mechanic limitations.

Some additional thoughts and questions:

I’m gunna request all 4E bombers be restricted to an ALT of no less then 20k when on shipping strikes… 6k just don’t seem right. For myself, I’m not tripping too much off of the Allied tactics. With three of them fighting for every inch of territory you know they are gunna push the envelope.

CV Soryu is not in too bad of shape – surprisingly. I think this is the last 2-turn sequence for KB and then they are heading back to Kwajalein. I wonder where those troops in that TF near PH were headed to. Do you think they were going after Wake? Oh well, what I really wanted were enemy CVs and they are NOT @ PH…

Also, the synch problem sucks. As a standard player of the Japanese side, I've never experienced it B4... <laughter>. What I don't understand is why there is a synch error between Darren and I. I mean, the turn hasn't been closed from Darren opening it so it *seems* to me that there should be no problems in the movie matching the combat report. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Read the emails in regard to 4E bombers. More then happy with the result.

As for PH why not send CV Soryu home with escort and pound PH into dust, sink the remaining heavy ships. They do not have much air support and you have managed to destroy most of that. You should be able to sink some more BB's amnd as many DD's as you can hit. Just be carefull you are not on port strike when the US CV's arrive.

While I would never normaly recomend this tactic I am still sore over Australians at Kuching, maybe because I am Australian....lol

Dutch or more realisticaly British would make more sense.

I suspect the Synch error is from one of two problems. Low level fighters strafing PT boats is a known cause. While the allies use extensie PT boats we will need to airstrike them and there will never be a fix.

If we are not all running the same files we might cause problems. I know my standard game has never had a problem, ever. The more mods you use the greated the chance for error.

Viewing the combat replay certainly provides some info, I will capture moe screenshots and pass on more info to you.

In regards to synch problems - we had that same problem in our Iron Storm game but that was because I didn't have the extended map loaded...

I've been running our 3X2 game in a seperate install but I still dumped the PWHEX file into the "ART\Maps_Modified_v6X" folder and then ran the ModSelect. When I run ModSelect I can watch it load the map and the PWhex file... I just don't know what it does with them...

I'm good with the 4E results too. So for you readers of this AAR, it looks like 4E bombers except for PB4Ys will be limited to flying now lower then 15k. Also, there seems to be general consensus to keep all planes out of the 5-8k range due to reported gaps in the flak.

Regarding Soryu, I'm still launching planes from her deck and I'd prefer to keep her with KB until they return to Kwajalein. Also, my max # of sorties is dropping fast. I don't know if I can stick around for a third two-turn series and still be able to protect the fleet.

And they probably used Australians instead of the Dutch and British troops @ Kuching because everyone knows they were the better Allied units during that time frame of the war... Consider it a left-handed complement? [;)]

I'm still laughing over your last e-mail in regards to AMCs - [:D][:D][:D] I have this picture of the Allies diverting combat ships to patrol duties against reports of Japanese AMCs - that so works for me!

Mike
