RE: Disater at Palau

Operation OO-RA is officially completed.

Overall, the op was far more successful than anticipated, despite the boo boo on my part in regards to the 2 port attacks. I essentially forgot to not include the dive bombers (due to the 2000 feet hardcoding which, if there are signifigant AA defenses, can be costly as shown) but then again, the main focus of the raid 'was' to hit the huge mass of merchant shipping sitting there.

Final confirmed tally of the raid so far is:

4 x CA
2 x CS
1 x CL
7 x DD
2 x AP
1 x AK

The light merchant losses belie the substantial damage caused that helps equalize the CV's worth of TB's and DB's lost when factoring in write offs and ditchings due to damage. Combat reports indicate that in addition to the losses over a dozen to two dozen more AK/AP were hit for damage which should put a crimp in any future expansion plans by Japan. The true bonus of course was catching substantial naval forces at the base.....a signifigant fraction of IJN surface power was caught and sunk, more than justifying the cost in far more easily replaced aircraft.

One of the best "early war" Allied raids I've seen.

If Nik can extract himself from this one without substantial additional losses then he has pulled off a real "beaut" !!

That sounds right, with one possible caveat: how were your pilot losses?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Not as bad as the flak losses though still steep. About 30. We can afford it given what we reaped. [:D]

Those 4 CAs (even though older ones) are going to hurt. That is about 22 percent of all of his CA's.
For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful.

Any idea what Bombur's butcher's bill was? (How many troops in total did the IJA lose?)

Id estimate he suffered a minimum of 10,000 casualties. Most of these will have been wounded though but it will take some time for the divisions to repair if he rests them or if used further, they will do so at reduced strength. Sumatra and Java are still in my hands as are most of the SRA with the exception of Malaya and northern Borneo. Battan is under siege but the island with Daveo is still in Allied hands. He's really behind schedule. Nothing much done out on the Pacific perimeter either. Burma is still in Allied hands too.
