Has Anyone Tried...

the new version of Action PC Baseball?

While we wait to see what Shaun has in store for 2007, Action has updated their game again, and for the first time, I am intrigued. I have recently gotten into the whole "Replay" thing (vs. career), and there are features of Action that sound pretty cool.

Specifically, I am interested to see how their ball flight, fielder, and baserunner animations look. It also sounds like the AI plays a good game as well from reading their message boards. Unfortunately, the rest of the UI looks like something that would run on the original version of Windows, and there is no sound, one of my favorite things about PS.

Never gone bail on PureSim of course, but there's always room for another game if it's good enough.

Cost is what keeps me away from those types of games.  I used to be in diamondmind league, but it gets too expensive for me.

not interested in Action at all but would love to see this added to PS "Box Search:  Scan all completed games to find special events. Click any of the found results to view the complete box score." That would be incredible.

PadresFan:

I have played the PC Action game for some time but I have not yet purchased the new version. In fact I used to do a great deal of beta testing for Dave Koch. From what I've read the newest version has some nice features and the game really does a nice job with the in-game ball flight graphic and it does have sound, though it was limited in last years version. The AI is pretty good and the game play is fun with nice ballpark photos etc. My big complaint last year was how the game determined when a pitcher was tired. It is based on pitch count, which seemed to be a good idea but in my league my bullpen always seemed to be exhausted and your pitcher will get bombed if he drops to the lowest setting. It seemed to work nicely with SP but bullpen management was for me at least a nightmare.

If you want more info I would be happy to help.

I purchased the upgrade a few days ago. I really love the new throwing animation. I slowed down the video speed to where I could see the thrown and the "runner" trying to get to third or home. It's only a small enhancement - but I find it a great addition.

It would be great to see something similar with Pure Sim. Overall, the Action game is good if you like doing season replays or drafting a team of major leaguers. It is a different game than Pure Sim. Ultimately, I am looking fro some sort of hybrid sim game that incorporates the Action or Strat approach with Pure Sim's ability to sim unlimited seasons or replay any season of baseball.

Well, I ended up buying it too. It's nowhere near as nice to look at as PureSim, and it doesn't sound nearly as good, but it's not a bad game by any means. I'll probably use it for replay associations, while using PureSim for the fictional ones.
