Yep; I use a 21 inch at 1400 by 900 native resolution for the game. The game is in perfect proportion.

RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
Yea, not long after making a stand for maintaining 1024x768 as the minimum resolution in the "resolution" thread because I was stiil operating with a 5 year old Sony Trinitron 21" flat, square tube that I ran in 1152x864, I finally bought a new 22" widescreen LCD for myself for Christmas. I'm now finding that I really like it's default 1680x1050 resolution.

RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
I have a CRT monitor. The screen is square.
This means on a wide scren monitor, either it runs the game in a square window or it fills the scren and all the units are squashed. Is that right?
If it runs the game in a square window, are black bands on either side?

RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
I run the game on a 27" Sharp LCD. I run at 1024x768 though because I'm sitting a couple of feet from it. Nothing like sitting on the sofa and smashing through enemy lines. [:D]
RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
When running on a non-standard screen format - ie other than 1024 x 768 - what happens is the side bar is extended vertically down to the bottom of the screen and the battlemap is extended both vertically and horizontally to fill the entire screen.

....battlemap is extended both vertically and horizontally to fill the entire screen.
This means the game must have a "squashed" look to it.
I think I'll get a square LCD and not a wide screen LCD.
RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
It does not "squash" the game, map, counters, etc.
The map just extends farther than on a normal 3x4 monitor... note the attached image (at 1920 x 1200):

RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
Thank you! This is what I was looking for!
RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
The monitor I am looking at has a native resolution:
1,680 x 1,050
But as per the options screen, COTA can run in the following resolutions:
1,024 x 768
1,152 x 864
1,280 x 1,024
Does this mean the game will not look good on that monitor?

Or...native resolution, which is what you want to use (look again at the start screen). One of the other choices may actually look good with that particular monitor, but you might get that "squashed look" that you mentioned.
Just stick with the native resolution of the new LCD and it will run in perfect form.

IIRC, the option to keep the current resolution in the startup screen comes in one of the two patches.
To bypass the screen and run at a specific resolution, have a look at page 7 of the reference manual.
Have fun,
JeF.

RE: Wide screen LCD monitor?
Joe, just buy the LCD. Buy a high one, a square one, or a wide one. you can even buy the wide one and flip it to a high one if you want-and you know what; it still works-very well. LCD technology is not a recent advance-it's been around for many years-it works. The time has come-stimulate the economy-go get your new LCD.
Check out reviews for the brand you are looking at-and read about viewing angles-don't be too cheap.

Joe, the LCD monitor I bought at Christmas is a 22" wide screen with native resolution of 1680x1050. The game looks great on it. Nothing is squashed. The map just extends to fill the screen so I can see a mauch larger area of map at a given resolution that I could have on a square monitor. I leave the "Match current resolution" box clicked when I start the game.

So, the LCD monitor I bought is a 22" wide screen with native resolution of 1680x1050.
The game looks just fine. However........
The main menu screen is squashed and stretched. Why is that?

Because the main menu is set at a fixed resolution (1024x768 IIRC) . Check your monitors manual (or graphic card driver) to see how to set it to recognize aspect ratios and maintain them. Most LCDs are set to "full screen" by default. You can however (if you not bought a cheap model) set LCDs to not stretch fixed aspect ratios to fullscreen, and that based on different on different interpolation features. This will also help with other applications or games that feature hardcoded resolutions.
Basically this works the same as with LCD TVs.
