Maybe someone can add this to the Wish List being compiled over at TDG.

Don't affraid, Rhino! A TDG spy investigates all suggestions posted here. This is the reason why the planned file "TOHW" (The One Hundered Wishes) must be replaced by DD of Wishes (a Dozen of Dozens) [X(]. It's coming...
Ralph - please, give my the composite units!

To some extent. It might be as simple as a toggle which turned replacements on or off. If on you were okay, if off you were not considered during the replacement calcs and routine.

First, I don't see why it would be any more difficult (from a coding perspective) to allow the full range of replacement priorities (which includes "none"). Second, the function you describe would go outside the normal system. Even units which do not receive replacements in the current system are still considered in the replacement calculations as making up part of the total replacements requirement.

Anyway, implemented in the right way this function obviously has some use. Some control over whether or not units reconstitute could also be offered at the designer's discretion. Obviously a 1944 German commander can't ask that replacements go to the line rather than new units, but his British counterpart should be able to disband units to fill out the rest and ask for them not to return.
There could perhaps be a higher setting that gave selected units as many replacements as they required before the other units were considered.

I'd suggest a new variable, and then replacing the single replacements phase with several consecutive ones, with the variable deciding whether the unit received replacements in the first, second or third such phase. This wouldn't quite do what you want, but it would fit in very smoothly with the existing system.
Anything on uber replacement level might have certain restrictions built in which prevented you just throwing the unit back into combat immediately.

This wouldn't be a problem with my above suggestion. Units could still be on "normal" replacement priority even if they were receiving replacements in the first phase. They would then only request a % of their total need each turn.

Create non artillery ranged fire for smaller scall engagements

This means direct fire, which means line of sight, which means a huge change to the engine.

..Ralph, toaw starts around the point where bullets, arrows, assegais, whatever, stop flying around your ears, under normal circumstances at least, regardless of period and despite Ben's fixation with WW2..

TOAW covers the period of the Operational Art- hence the name. This was primitive to say the least until the mid-19th century.

That's not to say that anything else is verboten. Just that you have to change the nature of the game if you want it to actually be realistic.

Allow moral boosts for Heros and generals, tank aces etc

hmmm, i'm not sure about this one

it seems to be a good idea for games like Close Combat, where you control single soldiers or squads, ot Panzer General, where units are so general that you don't reaaly know what they consist of (hopefully soldiers [:)])

it's rather hard to imagine an operational game with bonuses derived from heroes or tank aces, IMHO not the right scale for that, if you have a division or corps, then one ace or two tank heroes don't matter, do they (i know of Michael Wittmann but you don't come across many such people in every diviosion or corps [:)])

of course, this could be made optional.. but then, anything could be made optional...
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where –" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

toaw starts around the point where bullets, arrows, assegais, whatever, stop flying around your ears,
said by the original designer in toaw 1 days, somewhen anyhow, more or less , the assegais are my addition..

..and i adore 'primitive', obviously your school didn't have fencing classes, i prefered the eppee, the sabre was too heavy...

..the only thing that changes is the range/scale, in ancient"operational" covers what you, Ben, would consider a battle field, anything else is strategic, which toaw does anyway, i apologise for the lack of range of catapults, onegas and stuff..or how about the battle of the Atlantic, toaw-acow + BioEd does it fine, except the reactions are better in t3, howerver without BioEd you can't get foot-aircraft carriers*

*..the road got washed out from Malita to my farm, a mere 40k, it's the rainy season and some super-power didn't read the poetry** so i'm stuck in town..

**..Kipling's "a white man's burden", written and sent to the president of the US on the invasion of the Philippines in 1900..

..oh! have we mentioned elephants in the wish-list (third party or Elmer intervention)..

I was going to start explaining why TOAW can't handle tactical battles in the ancient period. However there are so many reasons that I think I would be better of not bothering. Same goes for your rather optimistic expectations of TOAW's existing naval warfare engine.

..be my guest..

..my experimental BioEd units give the same results as the bulk of the board/table games, up to 6% loss till one side breaks then slaughter-time, except only with acow, and t3's so much smoother..

..who's using the existing naval engine ?..subs as G or SF units, the rest as normal inf/mech/armour types and change the colour of the background, G units have the always "in supply" prob which reduces the use of milch-cows, so SF may be best, movement needs a distance tweak, and again, it needs BioEd to get armour/anti-armour correct butttt, s'fun..

I bet you could get the same results using Rome: Total War. Better graphics, too.

Anyway, my suspicion is that your experiments have very obedient commanders. Have you tried severing Hannibal's supply lines? What about using supply draining attacks?
..who's using the existing naval engine ?

You're apparently using ground units. Naturally, the fact that enemy ships passed through a stretch of water three weeks ago halves the speed of one's own vessels.

..obedience can be done either via the formation settings, the communication settings or the EvilEd

..supply at this level isn't a problem, what is, is having your rear threatened, which in toaw terms is the same thing (capture of baggage wagons time)..

..supply drain ? you mean the Ranged hi throw-weight/low ap effect ? i used for leaders, s'cool

..as for ships, yup, subs were there, they may still be there, bite nails, or clear the path with one of the few hunter-groups

You misunderstand me. You're the one being obedient- you want the system to work so you play nice. You don't try to break it.
..as for ships, yup, subs were there, they may still be there,

So move more quickly, not less- and that's assuming that friendly vessels have any idea the submarines were there in the first place. You're grasping at straws.

..oh Ben, unfair, who gave you flying aircraft carriers...

..otherwise, sure if all ships can move fast but, 8 knotts, really 4 to 6 on a slow (boats with crappy engines)convoy when zigs and zags are added in, because there were subs and may still be..

But zig-zagging would mean moving along a different course- not paying hex conversion penalties. And ships zig-zagged wherever they went, regardless of whether the last ship to pass through that area was friendly.

..nope, straight lines were used in known safe areas, zig-zag was only if uboot activity was expected, and even then an attempt was made to keep going in the same general direction, the hex size is such that such manouevres don't show in any case..

..as a translation to toaw hex conversion cost works nicely..

This would be dealt with by terrain, since these areas were fixed. Whether a u-boat was the last thing there or not is academic.

just a thought, on some scales a counter attack feature where you could pick a hex that if entered of attacked from troops would attept a pre planned counter attack

I'd like to be able to find units in the editor quicker/easier.  Having to scroll through hundreds of unit (ie FITE) to correct/add something is a pain.  If there is an easier way someone let me know pls.

Not yet. The right button scrolls a page at a time, and you can hold it down to autorepeat. The patch may help a little.

What is it with the invasion from Colorado???[8D]
