Hi Andy,

The image is one of the variations of the Staffel emblem carried by
aircraft of the 1.(F)/120.
You're absolutely correct that it only existed in Staffel form. With
the mid-war reorganisation
of recce units, five Fernaufklärungsgruppen (FAGr.) were formed, these
being numbered 1 to 5 with
a sixth, FAGr. 101, formed in 1943. The 1.(F)/120 was assigned to FAGr. 1
during 1942/43 and under whose control
it remained until circa October 1943 when it was placed under the
control of the Fliegerführer Nord West. The Staffel was
disbanded in early March 1945.

this should be Fliegerführer Nord (West) [:'(]

the German did differ between the forces used in the West and the ones they used in the East (Lappland)

looking through the books I found all three used as Staffel sign - at least they are mentioned as Staffel emblem. Looking at the suroundings and usage of the plane it seems to be a thing of WHEN the A/C was used - winter/summer vs day/day night

That may well be the case. It might even be down to the ability of the artist and the time they have to apply the emblems.

I've never been able to track down a copy of "Aufklärer-Luftwaffe Reconnaissance Aircraft & Units 1935 - 1945" at a realistic price, some of the 2nd hand prices being asked are outrageous. I'm waiting on Dave's new works, he's presently working on three new Aufklärer books.
