Entrenchments

I know that there is a problem with them as I have read it here before, but how is everyone overcoming it now. In detailed battles if I try to breach a line of trenches it is darned near impossible! Another thing I wonder about is how is the enemy starting detailed battles already entrenched, I know I must be missing something simple.

To be honest, it is extremely difficult to overcome especially early as the Union.  So don't have any real useful tips personally except to pick a flank and try to overwhelm it.   One of the built in AI advantages is for the AI to start entrenched.  There's nothing your missing other than that fact.  :)
