Well, I think that according to the conventional wisdom most will feel that no, I will not have the time to do it. However, I gave it a bit of thought and realised that by appropriately phasing my operations I can actually turn what the conventional wisdom would view as a weakness into a strength. By advancing more slowly in the Pacific ( as a direct result of greater emphasis on other theatres) I will allow the Americans to gather greater, although still insufficient, strength which they can wield to stop me.
 
Obviously it would be a great error to use this force to try to stop me until it is very strong. However I think that Allied players will be unable to resist the temptation to try to protect certain "key areas" ( I take the view that there is no such thing as a key area. The American centre of gravity is their carrier arm not Canton or Pearl Harbour or any other such piece of real estate. As such they shouldn't risk their carriers to defend real estate. However you don't see my view replicated in other's writing about WiTP.). They will risk their carriers to protect these "key areas" and then I will collect their carriers. Since these battles won't be taking place in mid-42 but late-42 the US CVs won't respawn until mid-44 instead of late 43... a 6 month delay which I intend to exploit --- I am modifying my carrier building programme to maximise the number of CVs available in late 43/early 44 to take advantage of this strategic window of opportunity.
 
How will I use it? Well either by mounting a spoiling carrier raid on one of their major anchorages or by covering a major amphibious invasion along their SLOCs. Neither will be decisive but both will have the effect of causing significant re-adjustments in shipping priorities, task force allocations and, possibly, even causing the Allies to re-arrange their invasion schedules. Ideally I'd like to raid one of their rear-area bases and land a few divisions on it during this strategic window as I think that would force the Allies to mount a counter-invasion and waste 6 to 8 months, a war-winning delay for Japan.
 
 
So, as you can see the delay in dealing with the Pacific will, if things fall into place, allow the Allies to forward-deploy more ships, planes and divisions and will allow me to get rid of them at a later time such that they won't "respawn" until after my early-44 strategic window can be exploited. It may not work but at least it is an attempt to be pro-active and it is more interesting than the usual "sit back and despair about 1944" methodology.

It'll be interesting to see if your vaunted planning works on such a large scale. I'll be a-reading and this has the possibilities to turn a few pre-concieved notions about WITP on thier collective heads.

I don't expect that the details of the plan will actually work out. I do expect the broad strokes to work out via the modality of frenzied improvisation.
 
I'll be posting a turn tonight... Things really look like they are coming to a head at India and my CVL Chiyoda got sunk by what looks like two US CVs worth of strike aircraft. Unfortunately for Jutland13 Chiyoda was merely bait designed to:
a) spring a deadly trap  ( best case scenario) or
b) let me know where the US CVs were so I could decide how much force to leave at Hawaii to protect against counter-invasion.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/11/42

All in all the 11th is a pretty quiet day except for the spotting of the Ceylon invasion forces and the shattering of the initial Allied counter-thrust. I calculated the ranges of the most common Allied fighters and then planned my CV and transport movement to end up 1 hex outside of that range. The end result was that the strikes which launched from Trincomalee came in without fighter escort and suffered accordingly. Tomorrow I'll have to enter the fighter envelope and while this will reduce the effectiveness of my CAP it will also mean my CAP can be succesful at this lower effectiveness as it has to turn back far fewer bombers. Plans within plans and all that sort of sneaky stuff.

Hmm, almost there. Almost. I really need to get rid of the Allied CVs which I believe must be lurking just north of New Zealand. I have put a lot of effort into builing Lunga up to a Level 1 airfiel so that I can transfer planes via air bridge from Rabaul to Koumac. Today the first wave of Kates flew into Koumac. I will try to base 70 to 80 of them here by the end of tomorrow. At that stage in time I will move cvl Chiyoda and a single escorting DD into sacrificial position east of Noumea. When the Allies come in to take the bait my Kates should launch. Chiyoda will be lost no matter what but I believe its loss will create the opportunity to destroy at least one of the two US CVs.

It is almost like playing chess again, gambit, counter-gambit, acceptance, refusal etc. Jutland13 is an excellent player but he is, IMO, too willing to believe that a gap in my lines or an oversight is genuine. Against most people that would not be such a problem but what you see is rarely what you get with one of my plans. This is also one of the reasons that I think it is difficult to AAR my games. I can describe what I'm doing but going through all of the branching what-ifs in the maskirovka underlying and overlying the plan is impossible.

Ah, 37 fighters escorting in 42 bombers. This is a sizeable strike. In a massive, swirling, dogfight 6 of my fighters are downed in return for 41 enemy fighters and bombers. 25 bombers penetrate my CAP ( which is a quite sizeable number of leakers... more than one would see in stock) but, fortunately, manage to score only 1 bomb hit. With system damage of 30 Chitose is in no danger of sinking but can afford no further damage if it is to maintain flight operations.

Almost a 1:1. I have another 400 AV on the way. It'll take a month but so long as I can prevent Noumea being reinforced during that time Noumea will fall. I realised, however, that 1 CVL wasn't going to be sufficient to protect against a major Allied push ( particularly since I suspected that this was where the Allied CVs would congregate) to reinforce Noumea and this is why I used Chiyoda as bait. If it works 1 or 2 Allied CVs are likely to be sunk or badly enough damaged that the Allies won't be able to run reinforcements in within that month. If it doesn't then Noumea will likely be reinforced and things will become increasingly difficult in the southern pacific.

Chiyoda takes a 1000 pounder right through the flight deck. Hit with 18 x 1000lb bombs it sinks in minutes taking most of its crew with it. On the other hand the 2 US CVs are within 8 hexes of Koumac and in RHS the range of a Kate is 6 with torpedoes and 8 with bombs. I've done the research and I'm sending my Kates in at 21,000 feet for level-bombing attacks. My rationale for sending them in so high is that this will be well above any ship-based FlAK and so while the altitude will make them less accurate the lack of FlAK should more than offset this.

Not all are going in at high altitude since, as those of you who have followed my posts on attacking late-war Allied CV TFs know, I've done a bit of work on trying to evade CAP. It doesn't always work but if it does I could get a free shot which Jutland will put down to "bad luck"... allowing me to repeat.

When I saw the Allied fleet moving away last turn I decided it was safe to order my strike groups to attack the airfield at Trincomalee. Unfortunately the Allied fleet decided to do an about turn and ended up within 240 miles of my fleet while my torpedo-bombers flew a relatively unimportant mission. Ah well, such are the vagaries of war.

Below you can see the situation at Ceylon. At least three separate Allied fleets are converging on the landing beaches. Tonight I will order all the ships to evacuate the landing beaches, stand out at sea and begin the process of attriting the Allies with carrier-based torpedo-bomber strikes. I have two CA TFs with the fleet and a third on the way so even if I get caught there should be enough power in my surface strike groups to fend off the Allied SC TFs.

In discussion with Jutland he tells me that the entire Royal Navy has sortied and that he is committing, 4 BBs, 4 CAs, 9 CLs and 7 DDs to this strike. It really makes my committment of 4 CAs, 1 CL and 14 DDs appear quite paltry in comparison. Good, I love being outnumbered [:D]. It makes things much more interesting.

The biggest news of the day as far as I am concerned is that my Kates didn't launch despite the fact that the Allied CVs remain in range. Well, sometimes it can take a couple of days to generate a launch. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

what sort of escort have you for the kates near noumea ? maybe allied CAP is preventing launch? just a thought.

I'm in a dilemma over ceylon .. most of me wants the RN to smash the japanese BUT i want to see you take india too <confused [;)]>

I had 12 Zeroes ( the same ones which slaughtered the Aussies over PM). I've reacted by flying in an additional 40 or so Zeroes so there should now be no problem at all with forcing a strike.

As to Ceylon... Well the British did have the option of withdrawing and saving the Royal Navy while India fell. It looks like they haven't done that though... It took me an hour to watch this turn... I think it is the most action-packed turn I've ever had... I'm going to post the report for this day in about 10 different portions since I took LOTS of pictures of all the lovely ships which were about to die.

Royal Sovereign was hit by a Long Lance torpedo in the first round of combat - a round in which the Japanese launched a surprise Long Lance attack - and while it still fought in the battle its ability to escape my carrier-based torpedo-bombers must now be negligible. With the Allies being close to their bases this sort of battle would normally be one in which the Allies could survive heavy damage while, for the Japanese, any damaged ship would be a lost ship. In this instance any damaged ship is a lost ship for either side as the Allied damaged vessels can either dock in Trincomalee - which will soon fall to my ground troops - or try to run for it and weather the storm of my carrier-based torpedo-bombers.

As the Japanese torpedo-broadsides became less thick the battle turned more and more into one favouring the side with the larger and more numerous guns. This was, inevitably, the Allies. Still, of the 3 CAs in this TF 1 was sunk, 1 was heavily damaged and rendered combat ineffective and the other was hit by a Long Lance torpedo and will probably not be able to escape the area. In effect only the 2 CLs and the DD Tenedos remain combat effective. My own losses are, however, beginning to mount.

And in the last flurry of the night two more Allied BBs lurch into view and proceed to decimate what is left. 2 of my CAs, 1 CL and 5 DDs sink before the morning sun rises above the horizon BUT, again, one of the Allied BBs took a Long Lance torpedo to its vitals and will, as a result, be significantly slowed down. It looks to me like the British fleet will be down to 1 active duty BB and 4 or 5 CLs plus a smattering of DDs and that sort of force is one I can handle in a surface battle. The rest will either have to dock at Trincomalee - in which case it will be scuttled - or make a run for it - in which case the Kates will ruin them. Either way the Royal Navy has received a death blow from which it will not recover. [/b]

Day Air attack on Tokyo [Honshu] , at 66,43

Jutland launches a massive air raid on Tokyo with a mixture of American four and twin-engined bombers, British twin-engined Blenheims, Chinese Il-4s and Soviet SB-2Ms.

I am trying to cover a lot of potential targets so I didn't have much to spare for Tokyo. I had only 2 training Kokutai flying Claudes ( average experience 20 to 22 ), a few Pete units and 1 Nate Chutai and two Nate Sentai. Fortunately the Me-109 is in production and I dedicated the first 72 units produced to the two Nate Sentai guarding Tokyo. The Mikes have been quite slow to repair so only 23 took to the air but they did magnificantly destroying 38 enemy bombers by themselves in return for only 3 Mikes shot down. In addition only 5 of the Nate pilots went down with their planes and the average experience of the two training squadrons jumped from 20ish to high 40s/low 50s

Only 55 of the enemy bombers survive to make their bombing runs. The majority of the rest were either shot down by the Mikes and Nates or forced to turn back due to morale failures in the face of being peppered by machinegun fire from the Nates, Claudes and Petes. 99 enemy bombers including 21 priceless B-17s are downed in the skies over Tokyo. Given their replacement rate of only 12 B-17s per month this sort of loss rate is absolutely unsustainable.

My only serious casualty was the small minelayer Ishizaki which sank late in the day. As I'm sure comes across I'm pretty damned happy with this outcome.

At maximum range 43 Kates find the Lexington and Saratoga and plant 6 x 250Kg bombs directly through the Lexington's flight deck. Heavily damaged I believe she will have to make for New Zealand or the East Coast of Australia. Either way my own CVs will come calling. I have been looking into the logistics of circumnavigating Australia with KB - and creating a sort of "Pheasant Hunt" in the Pacific to trap and destroy these American CVs ( and also to remove Australia's ofensive ability once and for all).

I think this picture shows just how heavy the fighting was today. Almost 200 planes including 23 B-17s ( 2 month's worth of production) were destroyed today.

And the plan for tomorrow... Tomorrow the CVs will drift westward in an attempt to pick off the enemy ships trying to flee to Karachi. The late-arriving CA TF ( the third of the surface strike groups assigned to cover the invasion) will also make for the hex the CVs and invasion TFs are CURRENTLY in. Jutland is bound to send some ships there in the hope that I won't move.

Since this new surface strike group has a full loadout of torpedoes I have absolutely confidence in their ability to handle whatever is thrown at them.

Well, what do you know? My CA TF ambush worked. They probably used most of their torpedoes but you can't argue with a BB and DD sunk in return for a single small-calibre shell hit. Move aside Savo Island. This is going to replace you as one of the most one-sided battles in history . Of course that's the propaganda talking. The Anson is mostly a Q-ship which looks like a BB, shows up as a BB on reports and thus can mislead the enemy but it has had most of its armament ripped out to make way for more AAA defences and so is severely compromised as a surface combat vessel. Undoubtedly Jutland only sent it and its DD in as he felt this was the LEAST likely hex to find my forces. Fortunately I managed to not be in the more obvious hexes and so this was the only surface action of the night.

And he comes back again. This time the bombers' morale is in their boots and only 9 survive to drop their bombs. Most of the rest simply turn tail and head for home once fired upon but, even still, 27bombers, including a month's worth of B17 production is destroyed.

The other point to note is how the armour on the Me-109s succesfully protected them from the enemy defensive fires. While 7 of the unarmoured Claudes and Nates were destroyed none of the Mikes were destroyed despite 6 of them having been hit by enemy fire.

While the Chinese at Kaifeng may well have thrown my forces out I am certain that they must be extremely short of supplies and, as such, are extremely vulnerable. I am thus concentrating my bombing operations on both reducing their supply further by bombing the airfield and, occasionally, destroying the resources which remain in the hex. I am hopeful that a combination of these two factors will allow me to take Honan before the forces at Kaifeng can intervene. If I do this I will have preserved the integrity of the trap and gone a long way to ensuring my success in China.

And here's the plan for tomorrow. The ships which have finished unloading are being sent back to Singapore for more troops, the ships which haven't finished unloading are going back to land south of Trincomalee, covered by two CA TFs and my CVEs and damaged CVL while 2 CVLs are going to make a dash north to Trivandrum to try to torpedo the warships trying to escape northward.

I think we'll have some torpedo-bomber attacks and some major surface action overnight and tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see how much the remnants of the Royal Navy can hurt my before they are destroyed.

In my game with Jutland13, we have a house rule vs not landing on non base hex's. From your landing I gather you can land anywhere?
