The 8th Panzer Div lost one of it's recon units and is severely low in readiness ( 17% ) so I replaced them on the front line with the 30th Ind Div.

Thanks for the update. You got me so interested that I had to find a picture of one.

Image

That's not a Sturmovik in the picture, but a Hurricane IIc (Lend lease).

This is an IL-2. http://www.pacific-fighters.com/ss/il2mfw2.jpg

They came in a number of variants from single seat with 2x20mm Cannons early, to later either 2x23, 37 or 45mm cannons with rear gunner. And able to use a bunch of different rockets, bombs or even torpedoes.

I'm not aware of them ever having 45mm cannon - AFAIK that was only used in the Yak-9 in a couple of variants.

And they could carry rockets under the wings AND bomblet in the fuselage (2.5kg AT bombs).  the 23mm cannon had twice the kinetic energy of the original 20mm cannont, and of course the 37's when fitted were capable of opening up any tin cans encounterd!

Well, it was only prototypes so maybe I shouldn't include it. But Yak-9K wasn't mass-produced either, with only 53 equipped with the cannon for evaluation (concluding that it hampered performance too much and actually risked causing structual damage)

I didn't realise so few K's were built!  According to http://www.aviation.ru/Yak/ 44 were used in action.

Axis turn 5 moves

I airlanded the 1st Brandenburg NE of Riga to attempt to cut off the supply to the Soviet units in Riga. They may still be supplied by sea, I'm not sure.

Here's the situation facing the 206th Inf Div. I don't much relish the idea of attacking Soviet armour with infantry, especially that backed up by arty....the idea of the long finger attacking Moscow has drawn most of the Axis assets into the Minsk area so this arm of the prong hasn't the anti-armour assets needed to confront the Soviet armour. I'm thinking of just holding those Soviet armour assets in place instead of attacking frontally with the devestating losses that would result.

The 254th Inf Div is clearing a bridge crossing of enemy roadblocks. This hex and the other imediment ( green ovals ) are needed to improve the supply situation for the other Axis units on the east side of the river.

The 253rd Inf Div is involved with clearing operations in the forests north of Minsk. These hexes are needed for the rail line that will extend to Moscow in the future.

The 21st, 32nd, and 121st Inf Div's are assaulting across the river and into house-to-house fighting in the city of Daugavpils.
The intention is to gain another river crossing to help in the clearing operations that will take place on the east side of the river in the next several turns. Most of these Soviet units are to be destroyed but there may be a few which will escape the carnage.

The 11th and 290th Inf Div's are ready to assault the western edge of Riga but hesitate to do so in the face of five Soviet arty tubes. The slaughter would be horrific, so instead they await the Panzer attack that will silence the arty. And before the Panzers can attack the arty they must clear the Soviet units out of the terrain to the east of Riga.
