Looking to buy a Matrix game....

Post by Wargamer39 »

I currently have UV, KP and HTTR. I am eyeballing For Liberty, Forge of Freedom, WITP and Birth of America. I was looking at Crown of Glory, but the poor reviews have turned me away from that one. Anyone out there have a comment on the one I MUST have?

I can't say what one you 'must have', but I've had a lot of fun with crown of glory, forge of freedom, and birth of america.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of those.

A must have is Birth of America, although it isn't really a Matrix game.
Go to the Ageod site for more info and direct download.

I seem to keep asking this, WHAT 'poor reviews'?!

Haven't played For Liberty, so can't comment, but the other three are excellent.

Only start WITP if you have a LOT of spare time. Immensely fun game. Literally.

One review describes it something like: "as fun as Excel" [:'(]
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

If Naval warfare is your thing WitP is the best game ever. Yes it takes a lot of time, but it works out to be the cheapest game you ever bought because of the depth of gameplay and the number of years it remains fun and challenging. Have a look at the forum: The number of posts/hits and the enthusiasm of the fans will say more than any one opinion expressed in this thread could tell you.

I would like to get Forge of Freedom or Birth of America, but think of the whole 'map divided into provinces' thing as to "Hearts of Iron-esque".  And I didn't like the way that game played out.  Didn't even get thru one scenario.  I see better reviews however for the 2 mentioned above than for For Liberty.  Played the demo and am playing 1848 (free download BTW).  Undecided still, unless someone can sell me on FOF or BOA.

I have For Liberty and am having a blast with it. I like it because it is hex based and you can fight battles manually in Tactical mode or you can let the computer fight them quickly for you. The AI isn't the greatest but it can give achallenge while you dig up a hot seat or e-mail game.
I tried the Demo of BOA and also liked it.
I imagine the determining factor is what kind of game appeals more to you, area or hex. I think either is a good choice if the period is one you are interested in.

Perhaps it was the review written by the individual who clearly read through the COG forum and culled a bunch of negative comments, many written BEFORE THE GAME HAD EVEN BEEN RELEASED, and called it an original review.

We have a family friend who is a travel reviewer for many of the major guidebooks and travel magazines. My mother once traveled with her, and witnessed her walking into a hotel, looking around the lobby, and then basing her review for a reputable guidebook on that cursory examination. Ever since then, I've stopped trusting reviewers not surnamed "Ebert."

(Except for those reviewers who give WCS games positive reviews, of course...)
Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I torment eager potential customers by not sharing screenshots of "Brother Against Brother." Everyone has a talent.
