old geezer finds opponent for first time PBEM

Post by bradfordkay »

I've been here a long time and have never played by e-mail. One reason is my life schedule - there will be times that work or other interests mean that I can't play for a week or more, and that appears to be unacceptable to most PBEMers.

However, I feel that I'm not getting enough challenge from the AI anymore, no matter how badly I handicap myself. Thus I am ready to explore the idea of PBEM. If my dialup can handle passing the files, I will be in this for the long haul (I'm still here on the forum after all this time, right?).

I'd like to play the allies in either CHS or CHS - experimental.

My reason for playing the allies is that I have never yet even looked at the game from the Japanese side, so this would be a nice advantage to my opponent. I have no idea as to the exact capabilities of the Japanese OOB, nor its arrival times.

I play a very historical style of play. Some examples of how I've been doing this are as follows:
No replacements until TFs arrive from the US/Aden.
The only a/c that can relocate and fly missions on the same day are those whose relocation takes four hours or less at cruise speed.
No more than 2 subs per AS can leave Manila each day.
No replenishing SCTFs at ports under size 3.
No replenishing BBs/CVs at ports under size 6.

These are not proposed house rules, but rather an example of my style of play. In general, if it seems impossible IRL, I don't do it.

I would probably be able to average 3-4 turns per week. Again, there will be time periods where I can't process any turns for a while, but this doesn't mean that I've lost interest. I live at GMT + 8 (US west coast), if that matters.

The only hangup might be if a WITP turn crashes my e-mail. How large do those files get after the game has progressed a long time?

Is there anyone out there who might be interested?

Turn files don't increase in size as the game progresses.

My turn files have. In April 43 they are about 1.6 mb so I can't imagine they'll ever get too big for my e-mail account BUT if they do I'll use my g-mail account instead. All you need to do to get one is have somebody invite you to join.

They certainly do increase.

They start at about 1.1MB. I'm upto 6/44 and they are upto 1.8MB now.

Guess that comes from never having a PBEM last longer than about 6 months before my opponents evaporate...[:(]

It's not so much that they'll be too big for my e-mail account, but that they'll be so large that at the 28.8 kbps at which I connect they'll stall the download. This happened with BoTR, but my newer OS and web browser/e-mail program have been handling larger files better than the one I had back then.

Thus I'll need to test it by receiving and sending a game turn to see if it will work.

Anyone interested?

Hi Brad,

I might be up for that. The only catch is that my schedule is like yours. There are times I'll be able to do 3-4 turns in one day and then times (like during finals week) I'll need a few days to study. Plus I work on Friday and Saturday nights so it won't interfere with any partying that you might have planned.

I too play a historical game. I tend to follow what the Japanese did IRL but not necessarily the same timeline. I don't mess with Russia and I don't go for an all out offensive in China (doesn't mean I won't fight there though). I also don't try to conquer India and I don't get overly ambitious with production. In other words, I try to do what I think Japan could have done in real life.

We can discuss house rules and the like via PM. I would not be able to send the first turn back until a week from Sunday
We are in the same time zone (in fact I only live 20 miles south of you) so that should ease any turn coordination.

I haven't played CHS yet, only stock so it will help level the playing ground somewhat. Let me know what you think.

Hi Chez,

I'm sending a PM to discuss this further. The first step will be to test my e-mail to see if a turn can get through... No sense in you spending the time to setup a Japanese first turn if I can't receive the turns, eh?

Shall we call this the Battle of the Skookumchuck?

EDIT: test files sent, barely handled (very slow dialup connection!). Opponent found, thread closed.

Thanks for stopping by...

Yep, standby for the flood! [:D]

This will be my first venture into a mod game so I'm looking forward to it with a bit of trepidation.
