East Wind Rain, Mike Hall Vs AdmNelson

Post by Freedom205 »

Hi all. This is my first try at an AAR, so I hope that I can capture some peoples interest. This is an open AAR, so Lew can read and post replies if he likes. The idea is to give a blow by blow perspective on what is happening in the game, not to inform you of my grand plans. (assuming I have any ; ) Readers will have to check back often to see just what I am up to. A short history on my WITP experience. I have always been an IJN fanboy, so I gravitated to UV, and then WITP right from the start. In my earlier WITP game play I was bent on completely destroying the allies and taking over all of India and Australia, and figured if the game mechanics allowed it, than it was OK. Over the "years" of WITP play I have evolved into more of a re-enacter and less of a conqueror. (thanks to great opponents like PzB and Bill Bowen) I am out to simulate a more "reasonable" recreation of history. With this in mind, my simple house rules for my own gameplay are; ASW TFs of 6 ships or less, no over stacking of smaller airfields, no sub invasions, and very limited use of PDUs. I will not invade Russia, and I will not try to conquer China. My opening turn rules are also simple. They are; no IJN TFs can end turn 1 more than 1 days sailing into an allied search plane radius, only 1 port attack turn 1, Allied AC TFs are off limits, and allies can only issue orders to TFs at sea. I will concede that all the IJN ships leaving ports long before the invasions would have triggered plenty of red flags, but there were plenty of red flags shown to the allies in real life, and they heeded none of the warnings. I hope you all enjoy, and turn 1 will be posted next. Almost forgot to mention, game will be a NikMod 8.0b

OK, here we go with turn 1.

The main objectives for turn 1 are:

Invade the following bases

Khota Bharu
Vigen
Legaspi
Dadjangas
Guam

Capture the following bases

Aparri (by para drop)
Lamon Bay (by para drop)
Cagayan (by para drop)
Jolo (by para drop)
Baker Island
Tarawa
Batan Island

All of these objectives were met.

A map of the PI invasion area is at the bottoom. Arrows are invasions, circles are para drops.

My other objective was to destroy the Pacific fleet at Pearl, and this was unsuccesful. 4 BBs did sustain heavy dmage, but none were sunk.

As a stroke of luck, The Zuiho was covering the invasion of Dadjangas, and managed to catch the fleeing Boise and sink her with one Torpedo. I will upload the screen shot of that a following post.

Here is a screen shot of the unlucky Boise. She has caused my quite a bit of pain in previous games of mine, so I am very happy to see her go down right away.

Mike and I have decided on a joint AAR. This will be my first game as Allied since I started a game with Sonny in Aug 2004( we are still going and finally have entered April 1945). All other games have been as a true IJN fanboy. I will going to the dark side for this game. Hopefully this knowledge as a IJN fanboy will allow me to see actions and operations that will entertain as well give Mike a good game.

First turn combat( still waiting on the turn)
Most action as usual PH getting hit hard. Landing in Malaya, Phillipines, Tarawa etc
Different was the para drops-- the loss of 9 B-17s will be fun to deal with

Will be interesting to follow this thread! [8D]
Sure you will do a good job as the Japs Mike, I know from personal experience that you will.

In our first game I played rather offensively as the Allies and got away with it, haven't been many chances for a
repeat in our second game...so be warned Nelson [:)]

So, will there be a second attack on PH?

Thank you for the warning PzB, Mike has already started off diferent than I am used too. Let's see if I can create some fun for him. It is different wearing the combat boots of the Allied player.

Third day is done and sent to Mike. Question " Force Z" is this force going to intecept transports at Khota Bharu, or Kuching, or Singkawang, or are they going to run away to fight a later day?

Sorry for the delay, ended up catching a very bad cold and had to take a couple days off. I finaly get to run the turn and the Admiral scores a big blow. Nagato, Fuso and escorts were surprised by the CL Mauritius and her DD escort. For two rounds of painful combat that little CL really layed the smackdown. After that thrashing my BBs ran for the hills, leaving a lowly CL to guard the APs. Thats when Task force Z rolled in and had a field day. Considering the curcumstances, I am lucky to get away as cheap as I did.
The Kashi and 1 DD were sunk, 1 CL and 2 DDs are in dire need of a port, and two transports were sunk. Plenty of action elswhere, but the debacle with the Fuso and Nagato occupied my mind.
Round 1 goes to the Admiral
Plans for the day were to invade the following

Kuching
Shortlands
Lunga
Brunei
Manado

and capture
Vigen
Dadjangas
Guam
Makin

all of the above went off without a hitch.

I am not much of a fan of follow up attacks on Pearl, but my abysmal results from Day 1 caused me take a second shot. Neeless to say, the follow up attack was no better.

RE: East Wind Rain, Mike Hall Vs AdmNelson

Post by AdmNelson »

Mines outside of Manila damages or many sinks ships running from Manila. IJN surface TFs encounter many fleeing ships in the Philippines. USS Houston takes a torpedo and is damaged, that leaves only the Marblehead as a US cruiser in the DEI area to contest IJN aggresion. Force Z finds tranports around Singkawang and does some damage. Nagato and Fuso were both damaged by torpedos: the Nagato in the surface engagement while a Vildebeest finds the Fuso and puts a torpedo into her.

Force Z surface engagement with the transports was during daylight and started at over 20,000 yards and ended at 5,000 yards. A lot of rounds were fired by Force Z.

Day 3 reports and Day 4 Objectives

Post by Freedom205 »

Having recovered from the nasty surprise delivered by Task Force Z, my main goal for day 3 was to get things back on track and according to plan. I really feel the Japanese player has to concrete goals and fairly strict timetable to follow. By the time the Zero bonus is gone, I will have long since turned turtle. I will honestly say the Admiral had me by the short hairs with the POW and Repulse amongst the sheep and the sheeps escort of surface units fleeing in disgrace. I spent quite a bit of time making sure that task force Z didnt bump into any more juicy targets on their way to Batavia. With Kuching firmly in my hands, I can honestly say that is the last we will see of Task Force Z for awhile.

Objectives for day 3 were

Invade the following
Amboina
Rabaul
Dutch Harbor - DH is a great base from which to keep an eye on Allied build up in the Northern flank- at least for 8 months or so

capture the following
Kuching
Khota Bharu
Brunei
Lunga
Shortlands
Menado

All of the above objectives were met. My last objective was to sink a single BB at PH, and this was a huge failure. Not a single Torpedo was launched in this raid! I can only hope I come to my senses and leave PH before I run out of precious kate pilots.

situation map for PI and Borneo

With the air bases I now control the fate of the PI is sealed.

Day 4 Objectives

Post by Freedom205 »

I have decided that I will not leave PH until I sink at least 1 ship. I dont care if it is a lousy AK or MSW. Something has to sink or we will stay. (I have never had a drought like this with PH)

Objectives for the day are

Capture Dutch Harbor and Amboina, seal of the PA troops in Naga with forces landed between Naga and Manilla, prepare for the assault of Rabaul, and lastly sink every darn Allied ship I can find on the high seas. If the POW and Repulse decide to stick around, they find themselves stuck to the bottom forever. [:D]

In my AAR game I called it an 'mediocre' affair when I sank 2 BB's at PH! [;)]
Could follow a trail of mag explosions after poor Wob.

It's really annoying how Mike parks ships outside of Manila and 'harvest' everything that leaves port [:'(]

Leaving Pearl?

Post by Freedom205 »

PzB, I prefer to call it a Blockade [8D]

Well I finally sunk something in PH, guess I should live up to my word and bug out.(and take on some needed Kates and Pilots) there is no doubt in my mind what is left there is going to be layed up for some time. This turn had the Admiral showing up near Baker island with a CV, (cute) managed to sink an AP and a AK of mine. Sadly Task Force Z slipped through my hands and made it past the submarine screen (well, maybe....) [8|]I was really jonesing for some payback on those two limey slugboats. My Naval LBA from Kuching managed to pound a few warships around Java, captured Dutch Harbor, Miri, and Cotabato. We also managed to catch up with the fleeing Houston, and she had better let out her launches and lifeboats before sunup.[:D]

For the next turn we will be invading Balikapan and Sinkawang. Will be interesting to see if I can keep the Admirals 2 PA divisions locked up near Naga.

Destroyer Hunting

Post by Freedom205 »

OK, going to take a big risk here. The turn is on the Admirals end, and I am banking on the fact that he will head straight into the turn after the Super Bowl is over. (as opposed to here, which would would let him in on the game plan for this turn) The situation is this; The Admiral has a large group (5 or 6) of Destroyers heading down the slot near Bali towards who knows where. (safety I would suppose) When he looks at the turn he will notice that Amboina now is occupied with aircraft. I think he will make the correct assumtion that they are Betties or Nells, and head SW towards Broome. (the estimated path of his TF is marked in blue on the map) I am moving my baby KB to the spot marked with a red X to setup for an ambush. Should he head toward Kendari for safety, I am sending a surface group there to meet him before he auto-disbands. (path marked in black) If he continues SE, then the LBA will take care of him.
As far as objectives for the turn, I plan on taking Balikapan and Sinkawang this turn, and if I can catch a break Rabaul will fall also. Last turn seen the Louisville showing up at Lunga, where she was met by two 1st class DDs defending the harbor. The admiral did manage to sink the Hatsukari, but took 50 hits in doing so, and his CA is limping away towards the south. He also showed up at Rabaul with the Addelaide, and he managed to sink a MSW, but my escorts put 32 hits into her and she is burning brightly. All in all I cannot be unhappy with my progress so far, but I have failed to keep my own losses to a minimum and am not at all happy with my showing as a whole. I have doubled my resolve to achieve a very large point spread. Time will tell if I am up to the task. Lastly one of my sub screen managed to put two fish into the Danae which was fleeing Batavia with POW and Repulse.

As Mike guessed I did go straight to the turn after the superbowl. I don't as a habit go to the AAR if there is a turn in my inbox. US Lousiville took a beating. My mistake, should have engaged during the day and not a night. The PA divisions at Naga hopefully will get to withdraw to Manila to help with the defense. The Danae took two torpedos and will limp back somewhere, while Force Z is being moved somewhere. As a Force Z is around it keeps Mike in check some what. Turn has been sent back and the Dutch Crusier force is on a mission.

Mike seams to want to stay in the Alaskan waters. The light crusier and destroyer escorts are by all looks headed to Anchorage, for what I don't know. News at 11
